Shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 30% levy on the European Union (EU), the 27-nation bloc has drawn up plans to hit back with retaliatory levies.The EU is preparing a list of U.S. exports that could be slapped with retaliatory tariffs if a bilateral deal is not clinched by the Aug. 1 deadline, the Wall Street Journal&nbsp;reported. The items being considered&nbsp;reportedly include aircraft, machinery, automotive products, chemicals, plastics, alcoholic beverages, fruits, vegetables, coffee, and medical devices.The new list readied by the EU and circulated among member states covered U.S. exports to the region that were valued at about $84 billion in 2024, the report&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/europe/trump-tariffs-eu-response-eb30fc55?mod=newsviewer_click&amp;adobe_mc=MCMID%3D74537243080012175182679892959762943330%7CMCORGID%3DCB68E4BA55144CAA0A4C98A5%2540AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1752542268&amp;_gl=1*svfuph*_gcl_au*MTc0MTM5NTM3NS4xNzUwNzcwMzkw*_ga*MTg1Mzg3MjI1NS4xNzE4OTcyNDYz*_ga_K2H7B9JRSS*czE3NTI1NDIwNTkkbzQwJGcxJHQxNzUyNTQyMTcwJGo0MiRsMSRoMjAwMzc4MzkxNA">said.</a> The sector-wise breakup revealed that about $77 billion worth of U.S. industrial imports and $7 billion worth of agricultural and food product imports would be brought under the tariff net.&nbsp;The EU was initially toying with countermeasures in response to Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs announced in early April, but decided to keep them on hold after the U.S. president suspended most levies for 90 days, except the baseline 10% rate. EU Fires Back At Trump With Threat Of $84B Tariffs On US Exports As Trade Deal Deadline Nears

The sector-wise breakup revealed that about $77 billion worth of U.S. industrial imports and $7 billion worth of agricultural and food product imports would be brought under the tariff net. 

As President Donald Trump sent letters to the European Union (EU) and Mexico over the weekend, the 27-nation bloc is reportedly looking to rally together other nations hit with a similar predicament.On Saturday, Trump shared on Truth Social screenshots of a letter he sent to European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen in which he warned of a 30% tariff rate that would be applicable if the EU does not clinch a trade deal by Aug. 1.&nbsp;As has been the case with the letters the president sent last week to over 20 countries, he clarified&nbsp;that the 30% rate is in addition to the sectoral tariffs.&nbsp;He also discussed a higher levy for transshipped goods, promised&nbsp;an exemption if companies from the bloc decided to set up manufacturing in the U.S., and vowed to retaliate if the EU&nbsp;reciprocated.&nbsp;Trump’s barrage of letters to trading partners&nbsp;has created uncertainty in the markets. The U.S. stock futures fell in overnight trading. The market, however, has largely stayed resilient, with the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY)</a> up 7% so far this year. The iShares Europe ETF (IEV) is up a steeper 24% year-to-date.The SPY was the most active ticker on Stocktwits late Sunday, with the sentiment toward the ETF remaining ‘bearish.’In a statement released in response to Trump’s letter, the EC said, “We take note of the letter sent by [the] U.S. President Trump outlining a revised tariff rate and a new timeline.”“Imposing 30 percent tariffs on EU exports would disrupt essential transatlantic supply chains, to the detriment of businesses, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic.”While stating that it would continue working toward an agreement by Aug, the EU said, “We will take all necessary steps to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if required.”It also said it looked to deepen its global partnerships, firmly anchored in the principles of rules-based international trade.Separately, Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-13/eu-to-extend-suspension-of-countermeasures-to-allow-for-us-talks">said</a> Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter, that the EU was attempting to establish contacts with countries, including Canada and Japan, to explore the potential for coordination.Von der Leyen told reporters in Brussels the EU’s anti-coercion instrument (ACI), which was created for “extraordinary situations,” wouldn’t be used at this point. “We are not there yet,” she said.French President Emmanuel Macron hit out at the U.S. on X, calling&nbsp;on the EC to assert the union’s determination to defend European interests resolutely. “In particular, this implies speeding up the preparation of credible countermeasures, by mobilising all the instruments at its disposal, including anti-coercion, if no agreement is reached by August 1st.”Early last week, a Bloomberg report&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/after-trump-ultimatum-eu-pushes-for-preliminary-trade-deal-with-us/chFvOBsR5QK">said</a> the EU was scrambling&nbsp;to negotiate a preliminary trade deal framework with the U.S. to sidestep a steeper rate, beginning in early August. After Trump’s Ultimatum, EU Pushes For Preliminary Trade Deal With US, Including Non-Tariff  Barriers

The European Union (EU) is prepared to accept a 10% universal tariff on many of its exports to the US, but is pushing for lower rates or exemptions in key sectors including pharmaceuticals, alcohol, semiconductors, and commercial aircraft.The discussions come ahead of a&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/trump-s-tariff-deadline-nears-here-s-where-global-deals-stand-with-10-days-to-go/chmZbi1RRe4">July 9 deadline</a> set by U.S President Donald Trump, after which tariffs on nearly all EU exports could jump to 50%.&nbsp;The EU, which oversees trade policy for the bloc, considers the proposal to slightly favor the U.S. but&nbsp;feels it is potentially acceptable if critical sectoral concerns are addressed, according to a Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-06-30/eu-to-accept-trump-s-universal-tariff-but-seeks-key-exemptions?srnd=homepage-asia">report</a>.The bloc is also reportedly seeking exemptions from the present U.S. tariffs, which stand at 25% for vehicles and vehicle parts, and 50% for steel and aluminum materials.&nbsp;EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic is reportedly in Washington this week to lead a delegation seeking an interim agreement that would keep negotiations on track and avert a significant increase in tariffs.The U.S has submitted a proposal covering tariff and non-tariff barriers, as well as strategic cooperation, though full details have not yet been shared with EU member states.&nbsp;EU exporters shipped 52.8 billion euros ($62.2 billion) in cars and car parts to the U.S in 2024. EU Willing To Accept 10% Tariff Deal, But Wants US To Cut Rates On Key Exports

The EU is also seeking relief from existing U.S. tariffs on autos, steel, and aluminum and has prepared retaliatory measures in case talks collapse ahead of the July 9 deadline. 

European Council President Antonio Costa on Monday called for deprioritizing trade and shifting the focus to more significant matters, such as the region’s defence.According to a Reuters report, Costa said, “The main issue between Europe and the United States is precisely about European defence, and we should focus on.”“Because this is the main issue, we should avoid introducing other issues that undermine our economic capacity to assume greater responsibility on our own defence."The EU official made the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/not-time-mess-with-eu-us-trade-eus-costa-says-2025-06-16/">comments</a> while speaking to reporters along with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen ahead of the G7 meeting in the Canadian Rockies.After recommending the imposition of a 50% tariff on EU exports in May, President Trump reversed course and suspended the implementation until July 9. EU Costa Tells US ‘Not Right Time’ To Create Trade Tensions, Urges Focus On Shared Defense Responsibility

The European Union (EU) received a reprieve on the tariff front as President Donald Trump&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114570775887793036">confirmed</a> on Sunday that he has extended the pause on the 50% reciprocal tariffs applicable to the region to July 9 from the current timeline of June 1.Trump clarified that the extension came in response to a request from European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen. “It was my privilege to do so,” he added.This&nbsp;starkly contrasted with the belligerent&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114556968834547173">tone</a> the president sounded out last week. He recommended a 50% tariff on the EU, alleging the trade negotiations&nbsp;had stalled.Responding to Trump’s latest offer, Von der Leyen said in a post on X that “Good call with @POTUS….Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively.”&nbsp;The EC president said the region would need time until July 9 to thrash out a deal.The development set off a risk-on mood in the markets. The Euro STOXX 50 Index, which comprises the biggest 50 stocks from the euro area, rallied 1.30% on Monday.Economists and analysts held a more muted view about the pause. Berenberg Chief Economist Holger Schmieding reportedly&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/26/trump-delays-eu-tariffs-but-more-volatility-could-be-on-the-way.html">told</a> CNBC. The six-week window probably won’t be enough time to settle all detailed questions, but it should be sufficient to “put the framework of a trade agreement in place,” just like the deal between the U.S. and the UK.″[It] is basically a matter of political will, and that depends a bit on the U.S. side,” he said.“If they do have the political will, we should really be able to have such an agreement with, probably in the end, a 10% tariff from the U.S. on all EU imports, hardly any EU retaliation, and [scaling back] a few sector-specific things … with some of the details to be finalized after July 9.”He warned that if the U.S. were to push for a 20%-30% blanket tariff on EU goods, the latter would&nbsp;have no choice but to retaliate with countermeasures.In an interview with CNBC, Guntram Wolf, a senior fellow at Bruegel, expressed skepticism about the extension.
