Heavy-dollar sales through state-run banks before market open prompted traders to unwind bearish bets, fueling the currency’s rebound.The article states that analysts noted that the ₹88.50 mark had served as a key stop-loss level for speculators, and the central bank’s actions have forced both local and offshore investors to adjust positions.Rupee closed at 88.04 on Wednesday.The RBI views the rupee’s decline as largely speculative rather than tied to economic fundamentals. Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that India will soon launch a digital currency backed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), designed to facilitate faster, paperless, and transparent transactions.Speaking in Doha during an India-Qatar financial cooperation event, Goyal stated that the government does not encourage cryptocurrencies lacking sovereign or asset backing, noting that India only taxes, rather than bans, unbacked digital assets.“We have not been encouraging cryptocurrency, which does not have sovereign backing or which is not backed by assets, say it on the federal bank or local currency. India has also announced that we will be coming out with a digital currency, which will be backed by a Reserve Bank of India guarantee-like currency. Our idea is that this will only make it easier to transact. It will also reduce paper consumption and will be faster to transact than the banking system. But it will also have traceability," Goyal said.He clarified that the government’s 30% tax on income from digital assets and 1% TDS on transactions above ₹10,000 are meant to discourage speculative crypto trading and ensure traceability, not to outlaw crypto use entirely. This led to large outflows from the Indian IT stocks. The move is expected to raise operating costs for Indian tech companies and reduce the employment of workers to the U.S.Trade tensions add to the woes. Existing U.S. tariffs of 50% on Indian goods — among the highest in Asia — are expected to further dampen export performance. Reduced exports mean fewer dollar inflows, worsening the external imbalance. Trade policy uncertainty has also added to investor anxiety.FII OutflowForeign portfolio investors are pulling back. Indian Rupee Falls To Record Lows As US Visa Fee Hike Rattles Markets

India’s latest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data came in at 7.8%, significantly above the Reserve Bank of India’s estimate of 6.5% and the government’s 6.3% - 6.8% forecast. Indian equity markets reacted positively,&nbsp;with&nbsp;the benchmark indices trading 0.35% higher in early trade on Monday.The April - June quarter (Q1 FY26) GDP data underlines one of the strongest quarterly performances in recent years. Growth was broad-based, with manufacturing and construction expanding close to 8%, reflecting strong industrial and infrastructure activity, said SEBI-registered <a href="https://stocktwits.com/PCRAnalyst">analyst Pradeep Carpenter</a>.<stembedurl>https://stocktwits.com/PCRAnalyst/message/627030706</stembedurl>Services remained the star performer, surging over 9% on the back of IT, finance, and trade. Private consumption and investments rose 7% - 8%, underscoring strong domestic demand, while government expenditure jumped nearly 10%, especially for infrastructure and welfare initiatives, the analyst said.The upside surprise came largely from robust domestic demand, which has remained steady despite concerns about a global slowdown. Private sector investment and government capital expenditure complemented each other, creating momentum in infrastructure and manufacturing, Carpenter added.Meanwhile, services exports continued to deliver, providing a cushion against external risks. Inflation remained relatively contained, allowing demand to sustain without aggressive monetary tightening.Challenges On The HorizonHowever, Carpenter sees significant challenges ahead. The U.S. recently imposed a 50% tariff on several Indian exports, including textiles, gems, and certain manufactured goods, a threat to job-intensive sectors. Global growth remains sluggish, with commodity price swings adding uncertainty to input costs. Domestically, India’s agriculture remains dependent on the monsoon, and any variability could push food inflation higher, denting rural demand in subsequent quarters.Sectors To WatchDomestically focused sectors such as infrastructure, cement, steel, autos, and banks may see buying support, while export-oriented industries like textiles, chemicals, and IT hardware could face headwinds. Bond yields are likely to remain stable, given the balance of strong growth and modest inflation. The rupee may find near-term support, though tariff risks could add volatility.What Next?Looking ahead, growth in the 7% - 8% range remains the base case, powered by domestic consumption and investment. In a push to reduce dependence on the US dollar, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has simplified the process for banks to open Special Rupee Vostro Accounts (SRVAs), a key mechanism to facilitate international trade in Indian Rupees (INR).In a circular dated August 5, the central bank announced that Authorised Dealer (AD) banks no longer require prior RBI approval to open SRVAs for their overseas correspondent banks.What Is An SRVA?The SRVA allows for cross-border trade by enabling transactions in INR. Foreign banks can maintain Rupee-denominated accounts with Indian banks for cross-border trade, allowing importers to pay in INR and exporters to receive proceeds directly.The framework reduces dependence on third-party currencies and improves settlement efficiency. Under this arrangement, trade can be invoiced in INR, exchange rates are market-determined, and settlements are completed entirely in Rupees.RBI Circular DetailsEarlier, banks needed explicit permission from the RBI before initiating these accounts, a process that delayed implementation. The revised guidelines now allow AD banks to independently open SRVAs. While the approval requirement has been removed, the central bank emphasised that banks must continue adhering to all existing regulations.Rupee BoostBy simplifying SRVA procedures, the RBI aims to promote rupee-denominated trade and improve India’s financial integration with its trading partners. This is a key step in the broader goal of de-dollarising bilateral transactions.According to reports, RBI has sold at least $5 billion across onshore and offshore markets in August to support the rupee, which recently touched 87.89 per dollar, just shy of its record low, after U.S. President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50% on August 6.The move, reportedly marking the RBI’s most aggressive intervention since January, comes amid concerns that a weaker rupee could fuel imported inflation and pressure economic recovery.The rupee has already fallen over 2% this year, with half of the decline occurring in the past two weeks.
