Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday that the Federal Reserve needs a fundamental reset to become more proactive rather than reactive, thereby preventing dangerous spillovers from occurring.He expressed the view while delivering prepared remarks at the Federal Reserve Capital Conference.The reset should tie financial regulation to an “overarching strategic vision for the financial system,” he said, adding that “We need to instead be more explicit about our vision for the financial system.”Bessent said, “Defining a path forward requires leadership with a broad perspective and coordination across the whole of government.”“The Treasury Department is perfectly positioned to provide that leadership.”The Trump official stated that bank regulators must continue to fulfill their statutory mandates: “maintaining safety and soundness, protecting consumers, and mitigating risks to financial stability.”At the same time, they should convene “interagency” consultations to define a strategic policy direction.The administration under President Donald Trump has been at odds with Fed Chair Jerome Powell over monetary policy. While Trump has called for steep cuts to the Fed funds rate, currently at 4.25%-4.50%, Powell and his fellow Fed officials have favored a “wait-and-watch” approach, particularly due to the uncertainty engendered by Trump’s tariff moves.The market has experienced bouts of volatility amid the standoff, although it has mainly remained resilient. Citigroup’s (C) stock hit a 17-year high on Tuesday after its second-quarter earnings beat Wall Street estimates and the bank announced plans to repurchase at least $4 billion of its shares this quarter.<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/C">Citi’s stock</a> hit $90.69 in midday trade, last seen in November 2008. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around the shares jumped to ‘extremely bullish’ from ‘bearish’ territory a week ago amid chatter rising to ‘extremely high’ levels from ‘high’ over the same period.The bank reported earnings per share (EPS) of $1.96, beating estimates of $1.60, according to Koyfin data. Citi’s Stock Jumps To 17-Year High After Q2 Earnings Beat, $4B Buyback Plan 

The bank’s plans to repurchase at least $4 billion in common stock this quarter follow strong “stress test” results from the second quarter.

JPMorgan Chase&nbsp;(JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon emphasized the importance of&nbsp;the Federal Reserve’s independence during the bank’s second-quarter earnings call, warning that political interference with the central bank could have “adverse consequences.”Dimon’s remarks follow persistent criticism of the Fed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has publicly pressured the central bank and its chairman, Jerome Powell,&nbsp;to bring down interest rates. Dimon added that tampering with the Fed’s autonomy could disrupt economic stability, calling such interference risky.“Well, from what I’ve seen the president has said he [is] not going to try to remove Jay Powell,” Dimon said during the bank’s second quarter (Q2) earnings call. “The independence of the Fed is absolutely critical, and not just for the current Fed chairman, whom I respect, Jay Powell, but for the next Fed chairman.”&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/JPM">JPMorgan’s stock</a> edged 0.6% lower in pre-market trade. However, retail sentiment on Stocktwits moved higher to ‘extremely bullish’ territory, up from ‘bullish’ a week ago.The bank reported earnings per share (EPS) of $5.24 in Q2, beating an expected&nbsp;earnings per share (EPS) of $4.48, according to Stocktwits data. JPMorgan’s revenue during the quarter came in at $45.68 billion, higher than the estimated $43.81 billion, but down nearly 10% year-on-year.Discussing market conditions, Dimon noted that asset prices reflect expectations for a “soft landing” in the economy. “Stocks are fairly well priced, likely in the top 10 to 15 percent of historical valuations,” he said. “Credit spreads are also a little unnaturally low considering the risks out there.”On the topic of private credit, Dimon dismissed speculation that JPMorgan would acquire a firm to gain exposure to the sector. “It’s not high on my list because we can do it ourselves,” he said. “You’re buying people and compensation plans. We may have already seen peak private credit.”Still, he left the door open to potential opportunities. “If it were the right people at the right price, sure, we’d look at it. Jamie Dimon Says Fed Independence ‘Absolutely Critical,’ Warns Against Political Interference

Citigroup (C) reported its second quarter results on Tuesday before the opening bell, reporting net income of $4 billion, up 25% from a year ago, as CEO Jane Fraser called the bank’s services segment its “crown jewel.”The bank reported earnings per share (EPS) of $1.96, beating estimates of $1.60, according to Koyfin data. Its revenue for the quarter came in at $21.7 billion, ahead of Wall Street’s estimate of $20.9 billion.&nbsp;“With revenue up 8%, Services continues to show why this high-return business is our crown jewel,” said Citi CEO Jane Fraser. She also noted that the markets division has its second-best quarter since 2020, with record performance in equities.&nbsp;The bank’s net income jumped to $4 billion in the second quarter (Q2), compared to $3.2 billion in the year-ago quarter and marked a 25% jump, which the management said was driven by higher revenues and partially offset by higher cost of credit and higher expenses.<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/C">Citi’s stock</a> gained 1% in pre-market trade on Tuesday.
