WK Kellogg Co. (KLG) has become the first major food maker to sign a legally binding agreement to eliminate artificial food dyes from its cereals, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced on Wednesday.<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/KLG">WK Kellogg’s stock</a> edged 0.15% higher in afternoon trade with retail sentiment on Stocktwits in ‘bearish’ territory over the past day.&nbsp;The Attorney General’s office said the deal was reached after months of investigation and requires Kellogg’s to remove the dyes by the end of 2027 under an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance. It noted that while rival brands have made verbal pledges, Kellogg’s is the first to sign a legally binding agreement.&nbsp;“Following months of investigating and negotiating, I’m proud to officially say Kellogg’s will stop putting these unhealthy ingredients in its cereals,” said Attorney General Paxton. “I encourage other food manufacturers to sign similar agreements to demonstrate their commitment to helping Americans live healthier lives.”The announcement follows a Civil Investigative Demand (CID) issued to Kellogg’s in February and a formal probe launched in April. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office said the inquiry began after Kellogg’s failed to follow through on a pledge to remove petroleum-based food colorings in the U.S., despite eliminating them in Canada and Europe. The company continued using various blue, red, and yellow dyes in American cereals.In June, General Mills (GIS) also publicly&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/news/releases/general-mills-agrees-remove-toxic-artificial-dyes-its-products-following-investigation-and-legal">vowed</a> to remove artificial dyes from cereals and foods supplied to U.S. schools by summer 2026, and from all U.S. retail products by the end of 2027, following a CID and investigation. Kennedy Jr. has signaled an accommodative stance towards saturated fats, saying that the risks&nbsp;of such dietary fats, found in certain meats and dairy products, could be overblown."There's a tremendous amount of emerging science that talks about the need for more protein in our diets, more fats in our diets," Kennedy said Monday at a U.S. Department of Agriculture event, according to a Bloomberg News&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-14/rfk-jr-vows-to-halt-attack-on-fats-in-whole-milk-and-cheese">report</a>.Kennedy added that the next version of the federal government's dietary guidelines, which would shape nutrition advice and school meals, would be released in the "next several months" and would stop the "attack on whole milk and cheese and yogurt over the past couple of decades."Kennedy's stance marks a reversal, as the health department has long recommended a low consumption of saturated fat, which is said to increase the risk of heart disease.The current dietary guidelines recommend that Americans over the age of two limit their consumption of foods high in saturated fat to less than 10% of daily calories.A shift in the federal stance could reshape perceptions of certain foods and push packaged food companies to reformulate their offerings, particularly those served in schools through meal programs.Tyson Foods (TSN), Conagra Brands (CAG), Kraft Heinz (KHC), General Mills (GIS), and WK Kellogg (KLG), among others, offer foods served in schools.Currently, only skim and 1% milk are recommended in school meals as part of an effort to limit saturated fat consumption. Both Kennedy and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins have previously publicly endorsed allowing whole milk to be served in schools again.The development comes as the food regulator seeks to remove artificial colorants from packaged foods. The retail sentiment around the stock improved to ‘neutral,’ compared to the ‘bearish’ a day ago, according to Stocktwits data.The report added that the hope is for the two separate units to cumulatively be&nbsp;worth more than Kraft Heinz’s&nbsp;current market value of around&nbsp;$31 billion.A split could be finalized in the coming weeks, according to The Wall Street Journal.
