China's economic growth slowed for a second straight quarter&nbsp;from July to September, official data released on Monday showed, underscoring headwinds from U.S. tariffs and weakness in some local industries.The gross domestic product (GDP) grew 4.8% year-over-year, in line with economists' estimates from Reuters. However, the rate was lower than the 5.2% growth in the April-June period and 5.4% in the January-March period. China is aiming for full-year growth of around 5%.What The Data RevealsThe world's second-largest economy continues to grapple with a host of challenges, including renewed trade tensions with the United States, weak domestic demand, and a persistent slump in the property market.Retail sales, a major gauge of consumption, rose by 3% in September, down from 3.4% in August. Industrial output grew by 6.5% last month, accelerating from a 5.2% rise in August.Private investment, a gauge of investor confidence, declined by 3.1% in the first nine months of the year, compared with a 2.3% decline in the January-August period last year.Other Economic IndicatorsMeanwhile, other economic indicators released on Monday will also likely weigh on trading in the Chinese market. The country's central bank kept the benchmark lending rates unchanged for the fifth consecutive month, in line with expectations.Chinese President Xi Jinping and the country's top leaders, known as the Central Committee, will convene for the "Fourth Plenum" on Monday, a three-day closed-door meeting to discuss China's next five-year plan.Separately, data from China's customs department showed that the country's exports to North Korea, a heavily sanctioned nation, rose 30.75% year-over-year last month, according to a Reuters report. They included soybean oil, processed hair and wool for wig-making, petroleum bitumen, and granulated sugar.Market SnapshotDespite economic headwinds, Chinese stocks — including U.S.-listed ones — are rallying, driven by AI-fueled gains in Alibaba and other major tech firms.So far this year, the iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI), which tracks major Chinese companies, and the KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB), which tracks Internet and tech companies, have gained around 37%. China's GDP Growth Slows Amid Renewed Trade Tensions With US

GDP grew 4.8% in the third quarter, deaccelerating from the 5.2% growth in the April-June period and the 5.4% in the January-March period.

The Chinese government reportedly confirmed that Beijing and Washington held working-level talks on Monday, but urged the U.S. to show sincerity to resolve the differences. The comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump struck a conciliatory tone on Sunday and assuaged concerns about an escalation in the trade ties between the countries.&nbsp;“The U.S. cannot engage in dialogue while intimidating and threatening to impose new restrictions. This is not the right way to deal with China,” the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on Tuesday,&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.scmp.com/economy/china-economy/article/3328883/china-and-us-held-working-level-talks-monday-despite-trade-spat?module=top_story&amp;pgtype=homepage">according</a> to the South China Morning Post. “China urges the US to immediately correct its wrong practices and show sincerity for dialogue.”Trump warned last week that he would impose triple-digit tariffs on China after Beijing tightened its control on rare earths. These critical materials are essential in manufacturing a host of items, including electronics, automobiles, and semiconductors. The warning sent stocks into a tailspin on Friday.&nbsp;The U.S. President, however, said on Sunday not to worry about&nbsp;China and that “It will all be fine!”&nbsp;but added that “President Xi just had a bad moment. He doesn’t want Depression for his country, and neither do I,” he added.&nbsp;The market latched onto Trump’s comments, construing them to be positive, and rebounded on Monday. The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY)</a> and the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/QQQ">Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ)</a>, which track the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 indices, rose 1.53% and 2.12%, respectively. The SPY and QQQ ETFs have gained 14% and 18%, respectively, for the year-to-date period. The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MCHI">iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI)</a>, which climbed 3.11% on Monday, has rallied 36.5% this year.On Stocktwits, retail sentiment toward SPY ETF remained ‘neutral’ by late Monday, while that&nbsp;of the QQQ ETF stayed ‘bearish.’ The message volume on both streams was at ‘high’ levels. The MCHI ETF drew ‘bullish’ sentiment from among retailers on the platform, an improvement from the ‘neutral’ mood seen the previous day. A long-awaited meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is more likely to take place in 2026 than this fall, despite Trump hinting otherwise last week.U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue said Tuesday that while the presidents are “looking forward” to meeting, the timeline has shifted. He spoke alongside a bipartisan delegation of lawmakers on the first congressional trip to Beijing since 2019, according to a CNBC&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/23/trump-xi-meeting-likely-to-happen-early-next-year-says-ambassador.html">report</a>.The group, led by Rep. Trump-Xi Meeting Likely Delayed To 2026 Despite Hints Of A Fall Summit Amid TikTok And Trade Tensions

 U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue said the timeline for the Trump–Xi summit has shifted, even as both leaders signal interest in meeting.

Chinese tech stocks in Hong Kong&nbsp;rose on Thursday,&nbsp;driven by AI-driven momentum in heavyweights such as Baidu and semiconductor companies, drawing fresh attention from U.S. investors.The surge comes after China reportedly ordered top tech firms to halt AI chip purchases from Nvidia and cancel existing orders.The Hang Seng Tech Index, which tracks the 30 largest HSI-listed technology companies, mainly Chinese internet, fintech, and e-commerce firms, rose as much as 2% to its highest level since November 2021. Alibaba, Baidu Boost Chinese Stocks In Hong Kong As Nvidia Faces Beijing Clampdown; Huawei's AI Push Adds Pressure

U.S. and Chinese officials kicked off a multi-day summit in Madrid, Spain, on Sunday, with the discussions on day one revolving around the looming divestiture of TikTok, trade, and the economy.A U.S. delegation helmed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with a Chinese group led by Vice Premier He Lifeng for almost six hours on Sunday, Bessent said, according to a Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-14/us-china-officials-kick-off-economic-trade-talks-in-madrid">report</a>.U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters later on Sunday that the talks are "going fine," but said that TikTok's fate will be determined by Beijing's actions. "We may let it die, or we may — I don't know, it depends up to China," Trump reportedly said.The meetings in Spain are also expected to lay the groundwork for a potential meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in October in South Korea, according to Bloomberg.While TikTok is the more pressing issue, officials would also prefer to make headway in trade discussions. Last month, the two sides agreed to delay the implementation of tariffs by another 90 days to Nov. 10.Meanwhile, ByteDance's TikTok is required to either sell its operations to a U.S. company or shut down by Sept. 17. Trump has extended the deadline several times, with a source telling Reuters that another extension is likely.TikTok had not been discussed in previous rounds of U.S.-China trade talks in Geneva, London, and Stockholm.The talks follow China launching two investigations targeting the U.S. semiconductor industry, including an anti-dumping probe relating to certain American-made analog IC chips. The probes came shortly after the U.S. added 23 more China-based companies to its entity list, which imposes restrictions on businesses deemed to be "acting contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the U.S."So far this year, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MCHI">iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI)</a>, which tracks Chinese stocks, has gained 38% year-to-date, more than three times the 11.5% gains in&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (SPY)</a>. US, China Resume Trade Talks In Spain With TikTok Divestiture Talks Taking Center Stage

This is the fourth meeting between the two sides in four months.

China has threatened Mexico with countermeasures should it formalize its plan to hike tariffs on Asia-made cars to 50%."China will take necessary measures," China’s Ministry of Commerce said in a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.mofcom.gov.cn/xwfb/xwfyrth/art/2025/art_e6fa3d4bfa6b48c8b49ccfc833a330f2.html">statement</a> Thursday, responding to Mexico’s plans to impose tariffs ranging from 10% to 50% on goods from nations without a free trade agreement with it, which includes China."Any unilateral tax increase by the Mexican side, even within the framework of WTO rules, will be regarded as appeasement (to the United States) and compromise against unilateral bullying," a translation of the statement read. China believes that such a move would harm the business environment in Mexico.Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said Wednesday that the government intends to hike tariffs on vehicles imported from Asia — especially from China — to 50%, up from the present 20%.He added that the measure requires approval from Congress and would be implemented 30 days after authorization.The new tariffs proposed by Mexico will also affect imports from South Korea, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, and Turkey. The country's government has&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/mexico-raise-tariffs-cars-china-50-major-overhaul-2025-09-10/">said</a> the move is aimed at protecting local jobs and industry, while analysts believe that it is aimed at placating the U.S.China could respond by restricting exports of minerals critical to the production of cars and other advanced technology, as it has done while countering U.S. tariffs, according to a CNBC&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/12/china-mexico-tariff-hike-countermeasures.html">report</a>.In the two years through July 2024, more than 20 Chinese auto parts and manufacturers have announced over $7 billion in investments in Mexico, according to the advocacy group Coalition for a Prosperous America and reported by CNBC.So far this year,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/EWW">iShares MSCI Mexico ETF (EWW)</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MCHI">iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI)</a>, funds tracking Mexican and Chinese stocks, are up about 39%.
