The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has sent a letter to Novo Nordisk (NVO) CEO Maziar Mike Doustdar regarding the company’s promotional communication featuring Oprah Winfrey, alleging that the video is false or misleading.The video originally appeared on ABC as a Primetime Oprah Special on March 18, 2024. It also subsequently appeared on Hulu. The video is a 42-minute special program hosted by Oprah Winfrey, featuring patient testimonials from individuals who struggle with obesity and excessive weight, including those who have used Novo’s Wegovy, Ozempic, or Victoza.The FDA <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.fda.gov/inspections-compliance-enforcement-and-criminal-investigations/warning-letters/novo-nordisk-inc-716495-09092025">alleged</a> in a letter dated September 9 that the video misbranded Novo’s Wegovy, Ozempic, and Victoza, making its distribution violative. The video was also not submitted at the time of initial dissemination or publication as required by law, the agency said.“These violations are concerning from a public health perspective because the promotional communication creates a misleading impression regarding the safety of Wegovy, Ozempic, and Victoza, which are drugs with multiple serious, potentially life-threatening risks,” the agency said.The FDA also noted that obesity and type 2 diabetes are significant public health concerns in the U.S., and consumers who seek medical treatment for these conditions should receive truthful and nonmisleading information regarding the serious risks associated with the use of the drugs. While Novo’s Wegovy is used for weight management, its Ozempic and Victoza are used to treat type 2 diabetes.The FDA said that several advisory comments dated as long back as 2010 addressed draft promotional communications for Victoza with certain similarities to the aforementioned video. The agency expressed concerns that <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/NVO">Novo</a> is promoting the three drugs in a manner that fails to present the serious risks of these drug products in a truthful and nonmisleading manner, despite the FDA’s prior comments.While the video includes numerous representations of the benefits of Wegovy, Ozempic, and Victoza made by representatives of Novo Nordisk, it omits important risk information or minimizes the risks associated with these drug products, the FDA said. Only four minutes in total were devoted to the important risks associated with GLP-1 drugs, such as Wegovy, the FDA said.The video also omits reference to how the drugs are contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of Medullary Thyroid Cancer or in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, it added. US FDA Alleges Novo Nordisk’s Video On Weight-loss Drugs Featuring Oprah Winfrey Is ‘False Or Misleading’ 

The FDA alleged in a letter dated September 9 that the video misbranded Novo’s Wegovy, Ozempic, and Victoza, making its distribution violative. 

Novo Nordisk (NVO) announced on Tuesday that its new obesity treatment, Cagrilintide, reduced body weight by 11.8% after 68 weeks in a late-stage study.The company <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.novonordisk.com/content/nncorp/global/en/news-and-media/news-and-ir-materials/news-details.html?id=916427">reported</a> an average weight loss of 12.5 kg, compared to 2.5 kg with the placebo, in the trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of once-weekly Cagrilintide 2.4 mg monotherapy, plus lifestyle intervention, for adults with obesity or overweight and a weight-related comorbidity without diabetes. The above levels of weight reduction were observed in participants who adhered to the treatment. The new drug mimics the naturally occurring hormone amylin that helps control blood glucose levels and appetite by slowing gastric emptying, reducing glucagon secretion, and promoting satiety.The company also stated that approximately one in three participants receiving Cagrilintide achieved 15% or more weight loss, compared to approximately one in 20 participants receiving a placebo, when patients adhered to the treatment.Novo stated that the drug was well-tolerated, while adding that the most common side effects were gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation. These side effects were mainly temporary and mild to moderate, and 1% of participants discontinued the study due to nausea, compared to 0.1% of participants who received a placebo.“We’re excited that these data, the first phase 3 data of a next-generation amylin therapy, show promise, and we look forward to further investigating cagrilintide’s potential in the dedicated phase 3 RENEW programme,” said Martin Holst Lange, chief scientific officer and executive vice president of Research and Development at Novo Nordisk.Another late-stage programme investigating the efficacy and safety of Cagrilintide in people with obesity or overweight is due to start in the fourth quarter of this year.Separately, Bloomberg <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-16/novo-plans-to-seek-us-approval-for-its-high-dose-obesity-shot?sref&amp;#61;8QBk7toa">reported</a> on Tuesday that Novo plans to seek U.S. regulatory approval for a high-dose version of Wegovy. Meanwhile, Replicate will receive research funding and is eligible to receive up to $550 million from Novo, including an up-front cash payment and potential milestone payments. Replicate is also eligible to receive tiered royalties on future product sales as part of the deal.Last month, Novo, which is battling competition from its U.S. rival Eli Lilly, lowered its full-year 2025 outlook, citing lower growth expectations for its blockbuster weight loss drug Wegovy and diabetes drug Ozempic for the second half of the year.The firm now expects sales growth of 8% to 14% during the year at a constant exchange rate, down from its previous estimate of 13% to 21%. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic.The trial was initiated in 2019 and was stopped early due to efficacy, based on a recommendation from an Independent Data Monitoring Committee, the company <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.novonordisk.ca/content/dam/nncorp/ca/en/press-releases/ozempic-ckd-indication-press-release-english-aug192025.pdf">said</a>.Ozempic is already indicated for the once-weekly treatment of adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control. It was approved by Health Canada in 2018.CKD and type 2 diabetes are interconnected. Around 40% people with type 2 diabetes develop the disease. CKD is defined as the presence of kidney damage, or a decreased level of kidney function, for a period of three months or more. It is estimated to impact nearly four million Canadians.Novo is currently attempting to increase the use cases for its GLP-1 category drugs, including Ozempic and the weight-loss drug Wegovy. Last week, the company said that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has also approved Wegovy for the treatment of noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis.
