Substandard work allegations surface in NHPC erosion control along Subansiri
North Lakhimpur, April 28: Anti-erosion measures undertaken by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) along the downstream stretches of the Subansiri river have come under sharp scrutiny in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, with allegations of substandard execution surfacing from affected areas. The public sector undertaking has been implementing extensive bank protection works as part of the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Power Project (SLHEP), investing crores of rupees to mitigate erosion along vulnerable downstream stretches. As part of these efforts, NHPC had sanctioned a multi-crore scheme last year for the installation of sand-filled geo bags and geo-mattresses in erosion-prone areas such as Bamunijan and Kalioni. However, concerns have now been raised by locals and observers over the quality of the work carried out on the ground. Allegations suggest that geo-mattresses in certain locations have been laid unevenly, leaving visible gaps that could allow river water to pass through and directly impact the riverbanks.
