Insurance stocks rose on Thursday, before paring some gains, after the GST Council announced sweeping tax exemptions for the sector.The rally was triggered by the GST Council’s decision to exempt individual life and health insurance policies, along with reinsurance, from Goods and Services Tax. This marks a major shift, as these categories were earlier subject to varying GST rates.Health insurance, United Linked Insurance Plans (ULIPs), and term life policies previously faced an 18% levy, while endowment policies attracted a GST of 4.5% on the first premium, 2.25% on regular premiums, and 1.8% on single premium annuity policies.The recommendation to exempt GST from health insurance was initially proposed at a <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/gst-healthcare-life-insurance-may-get-exemption/chsSjKbRdLO">meeting</a> between a panel of state ministers and India’s finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman.Stock WatchShares of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), HDFC Life Insurance, and SBI Life Insurance rallied in morning trade.LIC touched an intraday high of ₹910, up around 4.5%, while SBI Life rose 4.4% to ₹1,890. HDFC Life rose to ₹803, gaining 3.4% and ICICI Lombard climbed 4.8% higher.Niva Bupa Health Insurance stood out, soaring over 8.5% to an intraday high of ₹91Brokerage TakeThe GST exemption benefits players with a strong presence in traditional insurance products, such as Max Financial Services and HDFC Life. With the exemption, traditional savings products will become more competitive when compared with fixed deposits and mutual funds, giving insurers an edge in attracting long-term savings, JM Financial said in a note dated September 4.Among life insurers, LIC, Axis Max Life, and HDFC Life, which have traditional plans accounting for over 50% of the annual premium equivalent, are likely to benefit the most compared to peers like ICICI Prudential and SBI Life, the note read.In health insurance, standalone health insurers such as Star Health are expected to benefit from retail health policies, which were earlier taxed at 18%.&nbsp;Although insurers may initially lose out on Input Tax Credit (ITC), lower GST on medical devices and medicines should reduce claims costs over time. Indian equity benchmarks ended flat on Monday, recovering most of their losses in the afternoon session.&nbsp;The Sensex ended 77 points lower to close at 81,373, while the Nifty 50 fell 34 points to finish at 24,716 in a choppy session.&nbsp;The broader markets outperformed, with the Nifty Midcap index gaining 0.6% and the Smallcap index ending 1% higher.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the India Volatility Index (VIX), a key gauge of market fear, surged 7%.&nbsp;However, retail investor sentiment surrounding the Nifty 50 remained ‘bullish.’&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:790/99;" src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Screenshot_2025_06_02_162003_png_52ca0d2009.webp" alt="Screenshot 2025-06-02 162003.png" width="790" height="99"><figcaption>Nifty sentiment and message volume on June 2 as of 3:30 pm IST. | source: Stocktwits</figcaption></figure>On the sectoral front, technology and metals were the biggest laggards, while strong buying in PSU banks and real estate stocks helped market recovery.&nbsp;Indian Overseas Bank surged 6% while Indian Bank, Union Bank, and Central Bank of India gained 4% each and Bank of Baroda rose 2%, ahead of key monetary policy decisions later this week.&nbsp;Real estate names too saw significant action: Omaxe rallied 16%, Brigade rose 7%, Prestige Estates gained 5%.&nbsp;Tata Steel and JSW Steel ended over 1% lower after the U.S. decided to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminium to 50%.&nbsp;May auto sales were a mixed bag. Hero Motocorp was the top Nifty loser (-2%), followed by a 1% fall in Bajaj Auto and Tata Motors as sales missed street estimates. M&amp;M gained 1.5% after reporting 17% growth in May sales.&nbsp;FMCG stocks witnessed buying after the Indian government slashed the customs duty on edible oil by 10%. Britannia and Godrej Consumer gained over 2% while HUL and Dabur rose 1%.&nbsp;Fiem Industries rose 10% and Astrazeneca surged 17%, driven by strong fourth-quarter results, while Nykaa and Inox Wind ended 5% lower on weak earnings.Mphasis shares fell 3% on reports of losing one of its biggest clients, FedEx.&nbsp;Niva Bupa shares ended 10% lower after a block deal.&nbsp;Globally, European markets traded lower as global trade tensions and rising geopolitical concerns weighed on sentiment. Indian Markets End Flat In Choppy Trade; PSU Banks And Real Estate Stocks Lead Recovery

A rebound in PSU banks and real estate names helped Indian equities pare early losses; VIX jumped 7%.
