<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Earlier this week, the FDA raised its risk warning for certain varieties of shredded cheese, one of the most-consumed foods.</li><li>That comes in a year of frequent food recalls that have left consumers frustrated and feeling insecure.</li><li>Some users report avoiding packaged foods altogether.&nbsp;</li></ul>From radioactive shrimps to exploding wine bottles and bacteria-infested pasta, this year has not been the most appetizing. Now, the food regulator has raised the risk warning on certain cheese, one of the most consumed processed foods, leaving consumers scrabbling and cussing online.<h2 class="st-heading-2">The Cheese Crisis</h2>On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated the risk level on Great Lakes Cheese Co.’s shredded cheese, impacting more than 1.5 million bags sold across major chains like Target, Walmart, and Aldi, to Class II. That’s the FDA’s second-highest warning and conveys serious, although non-fatal, health risks.The agency is recalling the company’s various branded cheeses in as many as 31 states, with Google trends showing high searches for ‘cheese recall.’<h2 class="st-heading-2">Hardly The First Recall</h2>It's only the latest in a series of major recalls this year. In August, it was found that certain frozen shrimp varieties sold at Walmart might have had traces of radioactive elements – likely one of the most bizarre in years.&nbsp;Costco recently&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/costco-recall-panic-spikes-online-as-caesar-salad-warning-reerupts-heres-what-we-know/cL53f19REgp">recalled</a> some of its salad dressing for possible plastic contamination, and before that, its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene wine (941,400 bottles in total) due to a potential risk of spontaneous bottle shattering.Of the more worrisome, Nate’s Fine Foods recalled large quantities of pre-cooked, ready-to-eat pasta in September and October after tests found contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium. The FDA&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.fda.gov/safety/major-product-recalls/2025-recalls-prepared-pasta-meals-frozen-and-ready-eat-due-potential-listeria-monocytogenes?utm_source=chatgpt.com">confirmed</a> shortly after that at least 25 were hospitalized, and six died of Listeria monocytogenes infections.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Consumers Frusatrated</h2>Although there is no evidence that packed-food recalls have hurt sales at top retailers such as Walmart, Kroger, and Costco,&nbsp;online public sentiment is dipping.User posts show on X show widespread concern and frustration regarding the frequency of food recalls this year, creating a “trust crisis.” Users were also blaming the FDA and food companies for their oversight, while some said they would skip packaged food altogether for a while.It also led to what some call "recall fatigue," which involves consumers having to constantly check FDA recall notices, batch numbers, and expiration dates for the foods they buy."All of this lack of oversight of these food processing firms has led to the largest recall of food for adults and babies. Grubhub will reportedly pay $7.1 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it falsely advertised partnerships with thousands of restaurants.According to a Reuters report, on Tuesday, the restaurants filed a preliminary settlement in the federal court in Chicago. The report added that the settlement requires a judge’s approval.Reuters noted that the plaintiffs’ lawyers said in a court filing that the settlement class includes about 387,000 businesses. The filing stated that the online food delivery platform Grubhub advertised without the consent of these businesses that they participated in its delivery services.The report said that Grubhub listed these restaurants on its website and affiliated platforms without formal agreements, prompting allegations that the company damaged the reputation of these businesses. The restaurants claimed this unauthorized inclusion led to consumer confusion and a decline in sales.Grubhub had agreed to pay $25 million last year to settle another lawsuit brought by the Federal Trade Commission and Illinois' attorney general, which claimed that the online food delivery firm listed restaurants without their consent. The lawsuit alleged that the company misled customers about order fees and also duped drivers about pay.Reuters said Grubhub has denied any wrongdoing in settling both cases. The report, citing a statement from Grubhub, noted the claims in the lawsuit "have not been part of our business model for some time." According to the company, the lawsuit settlement will allow Grubhub to focus on its business operations.The report noted that the settlement applies to the period from early 2019 through April 2024. As of their last close, its shares are down about 50% from their all-time high in November 2024, and 25% down year-to-date.The company now expects same-store sales growth of 4% to 6% this year, down from its prior range of 6% to 8%.In the second quarter, revenue rose 20% to $280.6 million, just shy of analysts' estimate of $285.5 million. Cava Stock Nosedives After Sales Outlook Cut, Poised For Worst Day Ever — But Retail Traders Smell Opportunity

Subway is bringing in former Burger King executive Jonathan Fitzpatrick as its next chief executive, with a mandate to improve sales in the U.S. and help the company expand globally.&nbsp;He will take over on July 28, becoming the first CEO since private equity firm Roark Capital acquired the company for $9.6 billion last year. Fitzpatrick’s appointment comes as Subway works to reverse a years-long sales decline in the U.S. and expand its global presence.&nbsp;Fitzpatrick will succeed John Chidsey, who helped guide the chain through its sale. Chidsey was the former CEO of Burger King before taking over the helm at Subway in 2019.&nbsp;In a statement, Fitzpatrick said he plans to collaborate with franchisees and staff to boost profitability and grow the brand internationally.Fitzpatrick has over two decades of experience in the franchising and quick-service restaurant sectors. Before working at Burger King, he served as the President and CEO of Driven Brands, which saw 17 consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth.&nbsp;Subway said the Fitzpatrick will be closely with the Interim CEO, Carrie Walsh, to ensure a seamless transition.&nbsp;For the first time in around two decades, the company’s U.S. store count fell below 20,000 at the end of 2024 – a net loss of 631 stores from the previous year. At its peak, the restaurant chain had around 27,000 locations open across the U.S. in 2015.The U.S. stock market was trending in the green during midday trade on Monday. Wonder, the parent company of Grubhub, is reportedly in talks with lenders to raise between $400 million and $500 million to refinance the food delivery platform’s outstanding debt.According to a report by Bloomberg, the company has approached private credit firms and is exploring financing terms that would include a payment-in-kind (PIK) feature.&nbsp;It added that the structure would allow Wonder to defer a portion of its interest payments until the debt matures, reducing immediate cash obligations. The proposed financing would carry an interest rate of around 13%, including the PIK component.The report noted that private credit lenders usually offer PIK structures to fast-growing technology companies that have predictable revenue, particularly those still investing heavily in customer acquisition and product development.The report also noted that private credit lenders have considered financing proposals for Grubhub in the past, but a deal was never completed.Bloomberg data showed that Grubhub currently has $500 million of notes outstanding, originally issued in 2019 with a 5.5% coupon. The maturity date for these notes is July 2027.Wonder acquired Grubhub in 2023 from Just Eat Takeaway.com for approximately $650 million, comprising $150 million in cash and the assumption of $500 million in debt. The company has since been working to reposition Grubhub within the increasingly competitive food delivery sector.Recently, food delivery has faced regulatory pressure, particularly in New York City, where a cap on fees that platforms can charge restaurants has tightened profit margins.&nbsp;Grubhub,&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/DASH">DoorDash (DASH)</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/UBER">Uber Technologies (UBER)</a> recently agreed to settle a lawsuit over the feed cap in exchange for proposed changes to the law, which the city is expected to introduce later this year.&nbsp;Bloomberg said that Wonder declined to comment on the report.The <a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/XLY">Consumer Discretionary Sector Select SPDR Fund (XLY)</a> moved 0.6% higher in midday trade on Friday. Grubhub Owner Wonder Reportedly In Talks For $500M Debt Refinancing

According to a report by Bloomberg, the company has approached private credit firms and is exploring financing terms that would include a payment-in-kind (PIK) feature. 

Wine giant Vinarchy, formed after the recent merger of Accolade and Pernod Ricard's Australian and New Zealand operations, is setting its sights on Canada and Latin America to promote Australian wines, as shifting U.S. trade policies unsettle global industry sales.In an interview with the Financial Times, executive chair Ben Clarke said the company's brands, such as Jacob's Creek, are gaining traction in Canada, after a ban on U.S. wines in reaction to&nbsp;President Donald Trump's policies.Clarke also said its Spanish wine brands would appeal to Latin American customers.The rise of the new challenger and changes to the trade landscape are already weighing on American alcohol producers.In early March, Canada removed all U.S. wine from its liquor stores and restaurants, effectively banning its sale in the country.&nbsp;This action was a retaliatory response to the U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian goods, particularly aluminum and steel.&nbsp;The ban includes wine, beer, and spirits, making them the only U.S. products completely barred from the Canadian market.In recent months, shares of key U.S. alcohol companies have suffered.Molson Coors Beverage Co. (TAP), Sam Adams brewer Boston Beer Co. (SAM), and Constellation Brands (STZ) shares are down 4.7% to 19.1% year to date.U.S.-listed shares of Belgium's Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD) are up 35%, as the company offsets pressures with its strong performance of light and non-alcoholic beverages.Adelaide-based Vinarchy, formed just last month, is owned by a Bain-led consortium and has annual revenues of $1.5 billion and 1,600 employees.
