SoftBank To Invest $3 Billion In Ohio Factory For OpenAI Data Centers As It Looks To Advance $500 Billion Stargate Project: Report

This is the third tranche following the $40 billion investment commitment SoftBank gave in March. SoftBank’s total effective investment after deducting the amount to be syndicated to co-investors is $30 billion.<h2 class="st-heading-2">SoftBank’s Q2 Results</h2>SoftBak stated that its SVFs generated an investment gain of 3.42 trillion yen ($22.17 billion), with approximately 40% of that coming from SVF1 and 56% from SVF2. (ARM) subsidiary as collateral to finance an investment in U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) startup and Stargate project partner OpenAI.Minato, Tokyo-based SoftBank is nearing a deal with a few lenders for a margin loan, amounting to $5 billion, offering shares of Arm as collateral security, Bloomberg&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-10-10/softbank-in-talks-for-5-billion-margin-loan-backed-by-arm-stock">reported,</a> citing people familiar with the matter. The debt raised through the margin loan would go toward additional investment in&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/OPENAI">OpenAI</a>, the report added. The total margin loans from Arm shares would now be $18.5 billion, including the $13.5 billion raised previously. Specifically, the Vision Fund 2 was set up in 2019 to invest in AI-driven ventures and later-stage technology companies.While speaking at SoftBank’s annual shareholder meeting held in July, Son expressed hopes to transform his company into the “world’s top platformer for ASI [artificial super intelligence],” as he believed that it would be a winner-takes-all arena. “I’m all in,” he had said. OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank announced plans on Tuesday to establish five new artificial intelligence data centers in the United States as part of their $500 billion Startgate project.The ChatGPT-maker and Oracle will open three new sites in Shackelford County, Texas, and Dona Ana County, New Mexico, as well as an undisclosed site in the Midwest. OpenAI, Japan's SoftBank, and a SoftBank affiliate will open two sites in Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas.The ChatGPT-maker stated that the new sites, the Oracle-OpenAI site expansion in Abilene, Texas, and the ongoing projects with CoreWeave will bring Stargate's total data center capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts and more than $400 billion in investment over the next three years.Stargate had set the target of 10-gigawatt capacity when the project was announced in January."AI can only fulfill its promise if we build the compute to power it," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a company&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://openai.com/index/five-new-stargate-sites/">blog post</a> on Tuesday. SoftBank Group Corp.’s (SFTBY) Tokyo-listed shares have seen a strong two-day surge, mirroring the buoyancy seen in Oracle stock after the Larry Ellison-founded company spoke about strong artificial intelligence (AI) momentum.The rally in SoftBank, which has a significant weighting in Japan’s Nikkei 225 average, pushed the country’s benchmark index to a new high.&nbsp;Oracle’s Nasdaq-listed stock settled Wednesday's session up nearly 36%, after Ellison and CEO Safra Catz highlighted the company’s AI opportunity in the quarterly release and during the earnings call.&nbsp;The optimism seeped down to SoftBank’s stock, an investment holding company run by Masayoshi Son that invests heavily in technology through its SoftBank Vision Funds (SVF).While speaking at SoftBank’s annual shareholder meeting held in July, Son expressed hopes to transform his company into the “world’s top platformer for ASI [artificial super intelligence] as he believed that it would be a winner-takes-all arena. “I’m all in,” he had said.Son was found alongside Ellison and OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman in late January when President Donald Trump announced a $500 billion private investment through a project dubbed Stargate to expand AI infrastructure in the U.S. over the next five years.Softbank and OpenAI are the lead partners, with the former focusing on operations and the latter on the financials. Intel's revival as a leading chipmaker has gained traction following Tuesday's announcement that SoftBank had taken a 2% stake in the company worth $2 billion. 

Intel Corp.’s (INTC) participation in the U.S. CHIPS Act has garnered attention after a research note from Bernstein questioned the terms of the program.The firm argues that what was expected to be a $10.9 billion government grant now risks turning into a less favorable equity arrangement for the chipmaking giant,&nbsp;as per TheFly. Instead of receiving the funds as initially anticipated, Intel may be offering up a 10% ownership stake to the federal government in exchange for funding.&nbsp;Bernstein thinks this trade-off is “worse” for the chipmaker and raised concerns over shareholder value. “Funding a build-out with no customers probably won't end well for shareholders,” the firm remarked, noting that capital alone will not resolve Intel’s deeper challenges.Intel stock traded 5% higher in Tuesday’s pre-market session. The deal involves SoftBank acquiring common shares of Intel.
