President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia has agreed to invest $600 billion in the United States, with the potential to increase the pledge to nearly $1 trillion.“We count on $600 billion,” Trump told reporters. He framed the investment as a major boost for job creation. “Because he’s my friend, he might make it a trillion, but I’m going to have to work on him,” Trump added, referring to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.<blockquote>“That means investments in plants, in companies, money on Wall Street… And what it really means for everybody that really counts is jobs. Trump, President, United States of America</blockquote>In response, the Crown Prince emphasized Saudi Arabia’s commitment to U.S. growth, stating the kingdom “believes in the future of America” and signaling plans to increase the investment to nearly $1 trillion.<h2 class="st-heading-2">U.S. And Saudi Arabia Reach Defense Deal</h2>Trump also announced that the U.S. has reached a defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, including the sale of F-35 stealth fighter jets. “As far as I’m concerned, I think they are both at a level where they should get top of the line [F-35s],” he said, referring to Saudi Arabia and Israel as allies. He added that the U.S. plans to sell F-35 stealth fighter jets to Saudi Arabia in a similar arrangement it has with Israel.Trump added that he discussed the Abraham Accords with bin Salman and received what he described as a “positive response.” The crown prince confirmed that Saudi Arabia seeks participation in the accords while maintaining a clear path toward a two-state solution with Israel.Trump says he spoke with bin Salman about the Abraham Accords, adding that he believes he got a positive response.The crown prince adds that while Saudi Arabia wants to be part of the accords, which normalises ties with Israel, it also wants to make sure it secures a clear path for a two-state solution.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Saudi Arabia Seeks U.S. Chips</h2>Trump said Saudi Arabia will have access to a “certain level of chips,” referencing U.S. export licenses for advanced computing technology.&nbsp;When asked whether the kingdom could realistically invest up to $1 trillion amid lower oil prices, bin Salman insisted the pledge was genuine. “We are not creating fake opportunities to please America or please Trump,” he said. And I hear that McDonald’s is playing a very big role in getting prices down for this country.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">‘Affordability’ Emerges As The Key Theme&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>The Trump administration is beginning to face heat for surging food prices in the country, which many see as a consequence of his tariff policy, even though officials have downplayed the linkage.&nbsp;Democrats recently notched a series of wins in state and local races in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York, contests where voter anxiety over affordability, including soaring food costs, was a key issue.&nbsp;With “affordability” becoming a central theme, Trump appears to have reversed course lately. On Friday, he slashed duties on more than 200 imported food items, including coffee and bananas, and had earlier touted 50-year mortgages as a way to help ease monthly housing costs.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Where Are We On Inflation?</h2>On Monday, Trump pressed that his government was making progress in containing food inflation, without offering specifics.&nbsp;“Affordable should be our word, not theirs,” he said. “Democrats get up and they talk about ‘affordability,’ ‘affordable.’ They don’t say that they had the worst inflation in history, the highest energy prices in history, everything was the worst.”However, the most recent inflation reading from September showed that consumer prices rose 3% year over year, the highest jump since January. In recent third-quarter earnings reports, executives from top consumer packaged food companies and restaurants flagged rising costs and a pullback from low- and middle-income group consumers.McDonald's, which has been offering Extra Value Meals starting at $5 for a year now, has admitted that low-income consumers are having to absorb "some significant inflation."&nbsp;The "Big Mac" index, a popular gauge of food prices by comparing the cost of McDonald’s double-decker hamburger across countries, showed that its average cost was $6.01 in July, up from $5.69 a year ago and $5.15 three years ago, according to Reuters.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MCD">MCD stock</a> closed 0.7% lower on Monday. Trump Gives ‘Special Thanks’ To McDonald’s For Keeping Prices In Check Amid Soaring Food Costs

The&nbsp; <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY)</a>, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the S&amp;P 500 Index, and the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/QQQ">Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ)</a> ETF, which tracks the Nasdaq 100 Index, ended Monday’s session down 0.93% and 0.85%, respectively.These ETFs, however, are up 14.5% and 18.5%, respectively, year-to-date.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Not Worried About inflation</h2>Waller wasn’t worried about inflation accelerating or inflation expectations rising significantly, and instead chose to put the focus on the labor market. He noted that the 12-month consumer price index inflation through September was 3%, and the estimate for the inflation measure based on personal consumption expenditure (PCE) was about 2.8%, with the effects of President Donald Trump's tariffs being smaller than expected. Despite inflation running above target for five years, inflation expectations are well-anchored in the medium- and long-term, he said.The Fed governor said, “With the evidence of slower economic growth and the prospect of only modest wage increases from the weak labor market, I don't see any factors that would cause an acceleration of inflation.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Demand-Driven Labor Market Softening</h2>Waller pointed to government labor market data released up until the shutdown, which showed that job creation stalled from May through August. He expects that employment may have actually fallen during that period, based on the expected revisions period. Turning to the ADP private payrolls data that was subsequently released, he said businesses created a net total of only 6,500 jobs per month in September and October.He noted that slowing labor demand was underscored in surveys of employers and workers, citing the Conference Board’s index of job availability and the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) survey.To make his case, Waller also referred to the series of government data that showed that “continuing state-level claims for unemployment benefits have risen, on net, in recent weeks and are running above levels in 2023 and 2024.”He believes that businesses are actively cutting jobs or allowing the labor force to fall by attrition due to the actual or anticipated productivity gains from artificial intelligence. He views the current softening as a function of demand rather than a supply issue.The Fed official said, “After months of weakening, it is unlikely that the September jobs report later this week or any other data in the next few weeks would change my view that another cut is in order.”&nbsp;&nbsp;He expressed concerns about the restrictive monetary policy weighing on the economy, especially regarding its impact on lower- and middle-income consumers. The Fed governor viewed that a “December cut will provide additional insurance against an acceleration in the weakening of the labor market and move policy toward a more neutral setting.”The next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting is scheduled for Dec. 9-10.
