Qualcomm CEO Reportedly Says Intel’s Chip-Making Technology Not Good Enough Yet

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung will meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, with autos and semiconductors among the sectors most exposed to new U.S. tariffs.The Trump administration’s new trade deal imposed a 15% tariff on imports from South Korea, a key supplier of cars, semiconductors, smartphones and machinery.&nbsp;Automobiles made up 10% of South Korea’s exports last year, while chips accounted for 21%, with exports totaling more than 40% of the economy, Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-25/five-things-to-watch-in-south-korea-s-lee-first-trump-meeting">reported</a>.Lee will be joined by executives from Hyundai Motor, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and LG Energy Solution.&nbsp;South Korean media reported that firms could announce up to $150 billion in new U.S. investments, adding to existing projects such as Samsung’s Texas chip plant and Hyundai’s $21 billion investment in vehicle and steel facilities.The July 31 trade deal also created a $350 billion South Korean fund for U.S. projects. Trump said he would direct the investments, and 90% of the profits would return to the U.S., while Seoul stated that most of the fund would be in the form of loan guarantees, with less than 5% in equity.&nbsp;Of the total, $150 billion is earmarked for shipyards, and Lee will visit one in Philadelphia.Agriculture is another flashpoint. Trump said South Korea would be “completely open” to U.S. farm goods, though Seoul excluded rice and beef as politically sensitive. Concessions on agriculture may be weighed against lower tariffs for autos and semiconductors.Defense spending will also be discussed. Hyundai, Samsung Join Lee-Trump Summit As Autos And Chips Face Tariff Crossfire

South Korean firms could announce $150 billion in new U.S. projects, adding to Hyundai’s $21 billion and Samsung’s Texas chip plant, with a $350 billion fund and farm trade also in play.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company will concentrate its artificial intelligence chip development on a single architecture for its AI5 and AI6 processors, following reports that the electric-vehicle maker had shut down its Dojo supercomputer project and reassigned its team.“It doesn’t make sense for Tesla to divide its resources and scale two quite different AI chip designs,”&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1953660184351707210">Musk wrote on X</a>. He said the AI5, AI6 and subsequent chips will be “excellent for inference and at least pretty good for training,” and all effort is now focused on that line.Musk added that in a supercomputer cluster, mounting many AI5 or AI6 chips on a single board, “whether for inference or training,” could cut network cabling complexity and costs “by a few orders of magnitude.” Such a setup, he said, “one could call… Dojo 3.”Tesla is reportedly disbanding the Dojo team, with project head Peter Bannon departing and roughly 20 employees leaving to join DensityAI, a new startup founded by former Tesla executives, Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-07/tesla-disbands-dojo-supercomputer-team-in-blow-to-ai-effort">reported</a>.&nbsp;The remaining Dojo staff are being reassigned to other data centers and compute projects within Tesla.&nbsp;The company will increase its reliance on outside partners, including Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, and Samsung Electronics, for compute, and use Samsung for chip manufacturing,&nbsp;according to the report.Dojo was built to train machine-learning models for Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving driver-assistance systems, as well as its Optimus humanoid robot, by processing data from its vehicles.&nbsp;Analysts, including Morgan Stanley in 2023, had seen the system as a potential $500 billion value driver.Musk had previously described Dojo as a “long shot worth taking,” while pursuing a dual path with Nvidia.&nbsp;On Tesla’s July 23 quarterly earnings call, he suggested that future iterations of Tesla’s in-house chips could converge with partner technology: “Thinking about Dojo 3 and the AI6 inference chip, it seems like… we want to try to find convergence there, where it’s basically the same chip.”Just two months earlier, Musk had&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1930689309860045184">posted on X</a> that Tesla’s Dojo AI training computer was “making progress” and that Dojo 2 would start coming online later this year, adding that “it takes three major iterations for a new technology to be great… Dojo 2 is good, but Dojo 3 will be great.”Tesla has seen a wave of senior departures this year, including Milan Kovac, head of engineering for Optimus, and David Lau, vice president of software engineering. Elon Musk Reacts To Report Tesla Is Pulling Plug On Dojo Supercomputer: ‘Doesn’t Make Sense’ To Split AI Chip Focus

President Donald Trump's threat to impose 100% tariffs on chips imported from overseas has sent&nbsp;shockwaves among Asian investors, who have sold off shares of domestic semiconductor companies. However, two companies defied the chip sell-off in Asia&nbsp;on Thursday.&nbsp;Taiwan-listed shares of chip foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) were last seen trading up by about 5%, with the upside accompanied by above-average trading volume. Seoul-listed shares of South Korean electronics giant Samsung climbed over 1.80%.These two companies also featured in Apple’s press release sent out on Wednesday, announcing its $100 billion additional commitment to bring manufacturing to the U.S.Apple said TSMC’s Arizona plant would produce tens of millions of chips to facilitate the tech giant’s use of one of the most advanced technologies in the U.S. The Taiwanese company has three fabs at the site, one&nbsp;of which produces chips based on the N4 process technology. The fab began volume shipments in the fourth quarter of 2024.The second fab is scheduled to start volume production based on the N3 process technology in 2028, and a third fab, set to use the N2 and A16 process technologies, is expected to commence production by the end of the decade.Apple stated in the release that it was collaborating with Samsung at its Austin, Texas, facility to introduce an innovative new technology for chip manufacturing.&nbsp;Recent news that Samsung has won a $16.5 billion contract to&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/elon-musk-confirms-tesla-as-samsung-s-16-5-b-chip-partner-in-major-foundry-deal/choe9tER5D5">manufacture</a> Tesla's next-generation AI6 chip at its other Texas factory has also boosted investor sentiment.&nbsp;On Stocktwits, retail sentiment toward TSMC improved to ‘neutral’ (54/100) by late Wednesday from ‘bearish’ a day ago. U.S. Commerce Department officials are reportedly considering ending waivers that allow major global chipmakers to export American semiconductor equipment to factories in China.A Wall Street Journal report said a senior Commerce official met recently with companies such as Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM) to discuss rescinding blanket permissions that have let them ship U.S.-made chip tools to China without applying for licenses on a case-by-case basis.If enacted, the repeal could exacerbate U.S.–China trade tensions and strain ties with South Korea and Taiwan.&nbsp;Affected firms would need to secure individual export permits and may turn to Japanese and European tool suppliers instead.The report indicated the measure would mirror China's licensing regime for rare earth magnets, aiming to establish parity in trade controls.&nbsp;The move also fits into President Donald Trump’s broader effort to curb China’s access to advanced technology even amid a tentative trade truce struck in London earlier this month.In the past few months, the U.S. government has stopped shipments of advanced semiconductors from Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices to China, resulting in multi-billion-dollar losses for the American firms.Nvidia was hit with an export restriction on its H20 products to China starting April 9. U.S.-listed shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) dropped over 1% in pre-market trading on Wednesday after a report by&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-01-15/us-to-push-tsmc-and-samsung-to-tighten-flow-of-chips-to-china">Bloomberg</a> indicated that there may be more chip export restrictions on the way before President Joe Biden’s term in office comes to an end.&nbsp;The new measures are expected to target TSMC, Samsung Electronics (SSNLF), and Intel Corp.
