Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. Transactions are grouped into blocks added approximately every 10 minutes through mining, where specialized computers compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles.   Bitcoin has achieved mainstream adoption through multiple vectors. The January 2024 SEC approval of 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs opened Bitcoin investment to traditional finance participants, and corporations like Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) are using Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset to protect against currency debasement, offering MSTR holders amplified exposure to Bitcoin.   The Bitcoin ecosystem continues to evolve with innovations like Ordinals, which emerged in January 2023 to enable NFT-like functionality directly on Bitcoin, and BRC-20 tokens, an experimental standard for creating fungible tokens using Ordinal inscriptions. BTCFi (Bitcoin Finance) represents emerging financial applications extending beyond Bitcoin's traditional role, with protocols like Babylon allowing Bitcoin holders to stake BTC to secure Proof of Stake chains.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has ended its emergency response to the H5N1 bird flu outbreak, a move that removes a key policy tailwind for vaccine developers, including Moderna, Novavax, CureVac, and Traws Pharma.The CDC reportedly deactivated its response last week and will now track bird flu alongside seasonal influenza, updating human monitoring data monthly, Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-07/bird-flu-emergency-response-ends-in-us-as-infections-decline">reported</a>.&nbsp;Animal transmission data will no longer be published, the agency said. Washington and California, two of the most affected states, have also scaled back efforts.&nbsp;California ended its emergency declaration in April, while Washington is downsizing its public health response. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services stated that the CDC’s transition reflects a return to regular program operations.&nbsp;During the response, 375 CDC staff had been assigned to the outbreak, the agency added.The CDC’s move comes amid broader federal cutbacks. Earlier this year, HHS scrapped a $766 million deal with Moderna for developing mRNA bird flu vaccines.Public health officials said a decline in surveillance would make it harder to spot the next outbreak.&nbsp; “We are letting our guard down,” said Michael Kinch, an infectious disease expert at Stony Brook University.In January, heightened bird flu fears had boosted attention on pandemic-preparedness companies.&nbsp;The U.S. reported its first human death from H5N1 in Louisiana and awarded $306 million for avian flu response, including $176 million to&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MRNA">Moderna</a> for its mRNA-1018 vaccine candidate.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/NVAX">Novavax</a> had been advancing pre-clinical H5N1 vaccine research, while Germany’s&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/CVAC">CureVac</a> partnered with&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/GSK">GlaxoSmithKline</a> on another bird flu shot.&nbsp;Traws Pharma, which is developing a one-dose antiviral therapy called tivoxavir marboxil, disclosed promising preclinical results in December 2024 and plans a Phase 2 trial this year.Bird flu has infected at least 70 people in the U.S. since the start of the outbreak, mostly agricultural workers. While most cases have been mild, one fatality was recorded in January. The virus remains a concern in migratory birds and cattle.Retail sentiment on Stocktwits was mixed across vaccine makers: ‘bullish’ for Moderna and GSK, ‘neutral’ for Novavax, and ‘bearish’ for CureVac. Cooling US Bird Flu Wave Removes Tailwind For Moderna, Novavax, CureVac, Traws Pharma

The CDC reportedly deactivated its bird flu emergency response last week, folding surveillance into its regular flu tracking and ending animal infection updates.

Traws Pharma shares surged more than 200% on Monday, reaching highs seen in June after the company announced significant progress in developing its investigational one-dose influenza therapy, tivoxavir marboxil, for H5N1 bird flu treatment.&nbsp;Trading volume skyrocketed to over 2,600 times the daily average.In laboratory studies, tivoxavir marboxil demonstrated efficacy against highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza isolates.&nbsp;Traws’ Chief Science Officer David Pauza highlighted preclinical results, showing complete survival and reduced lung virus levels in mice infected with human H5N1 isolated from a dairy worker exposed to infected cattle.&nbsp;CEO Werner Cautreels added that Phase 1 clinical trial data confirmed the therapy’s safety and tolerability.&nbsp;A Phase 2 study is planned for the first half of 2025, the company said.The announcement comes amid escalating concerns over H5N1’s&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/bird-flu-cases-spread-warning-signs-rcna185084">spread</a>.&nbsp;The U.S. has reported 64 infections since April, with dairy herds in 16 states affected.&nbsp;Last week, California declared a state of emergency after an uptick in cases among dairy cows, and Louisiana reported the country’s first severe human infection.Retail interest&nbsp;in Traws surged on Monday, making its stock one of the top three trending symbols on Stocktwits.&nbsp;Discussions on the platform were mixed, with some predicting a breakout above $20 — a level last seen in April — and others cautioning about a potential share offering due to the company’s tight financial position.&nbsp;<stembedurl>https://stocktwits.com/miraclehunter/message/597607177</stembedurl><stembedurl>https://stocktwits.com/MarketAce/message/597606552</stembedurl>As of the last quarter, Traws had $5.4 million in cash and $11 million in liabilities, according to data on Koyfin.In addition to tivoxavir marboxil, Traws Pharma’s pipeline includes ratutrelvir for COVID-19, targeting viral proteases, and investigational cancer therapies like narazaciclib and rigosertib, which focus on cell cycle proteins.Traws Pharma began trading on&nbsp;the Nasdaq in April following the acquisition of Trawsfynydd Therapeutics by Onconova Therapeutics.&nbsp;Still, the stock remains down 24% year-to-date.For updates and corrections, email newsroom[at]stocktwits[dot]com.
