Leveraged oil and energy ETFs surged as crude prices jumped on rising U.S.-Iran tensions. Supply risks boosted bullish bets across leveraged energy funds.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Gold to remain rangebound between $4,860 and $5,140 an ounce, according to Ole Hansen</li><li>Tensions in the Middle East also drove crude prices higher, with Brent crude futures climbing 1.3%</li><li>Federal Reserve officials signaled a potential pause on further rate cuts unless inflation continues to cool later this year.</li></ul>Gold prices inched higher Thursday as escalating U.S.-Iran tensions spurred safe-haven demand, though a firmer dollar capped momentum following cautious signals from the Federal Reserve’s latest policy minutes.Spot gold (XAU/USD) briefly climbed above $5,000 an ounce before retreating and was up 0.3% at $4,988 an ounce at the time of writing. Gold futures for April 2026 deliveries were trading at $5,010 per ounce.Meanwhile, spot silver (XAG/USD) saw a sharper rise, gaining 1.5% to around $78.3 an ounce. Contracts expiring in April 2026 were up 1% at $78.69 per ounce.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Middle-East Risks Escalate</h2>Tensions in the Middle East are escalating after Iran reportedly issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) on Wednesday warning pilots of potential hazards during missile tests, days after temporarily shutting the Strait of Hormuz for live-fire drills. At the same time, the USS Abraham Lincoln and nearly 80 aircraft were stationed about 700 kilometers off Iran’s coast, while the USS Gerald Ford carrier group moves toward the region. Tehran is also expected to hold joint naval exercises with Russia later this week.The tensions also drove oil prices higher on Thursday, with Brent Crude futures for April 2026 deliveries climbing 1.3% to $71.3 per barrel. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude, with a similar expiry, was up around 1.5% at $66 a barrel.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Fed Minutes, Dollar’s Strength Caps Gold’s Upside</h2>Despite geopolitical tailwinds, bullion’s rally stalled after minutes from the January meeting of the Federal Reserve showed policymakers were divided on the path forward for rate cuts.The minutes signal that any additional rate cuts should be put on hold for now and may resume later this year only if inflation continues to ease.“In considering the outlook for monetary policy, several participants commented that further downward adjustments to the target range for the federal funds rate would likely be appropriate if inflation were to decline in line with their expectations,” according to FOMC minutes released on Wednesday.The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the U.S. dollar against six major currencies, was up 0.1%, while the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.094%.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Analysts Expect Gold To Remain Rangebound</h2>Veteran commodities expert and Head of Commodity Strategy for Saxo Bank, Ole Hansen, expects gold to remain between $4,860 and $5,140 an ounce, noting that while prices briefly climbed back above $5,000 on rising Middle East tensions, gains stalled as a stronger dollar and higher bond yields followed cautious signals from the latest Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes.<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/Ole_S_Hansen/status/2024379966951940458"><img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Ole_Hansen_jpg_5308bb13c7.webp" alt="Ole Hansen.jpg"></a>Jamie Dutta of Nemo.money told Reuters on Thursday that “Geopolitical concerns are front and centre” of gold’s price action, with reports suggesting any potential U.S. military action against Iran could last for weeks.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Miners Trade Mixed In Pre-Market</h2>Shares of gold miners traded mixed in pre-market with <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/NEM">Newmont Corp</a>. Gold Inches Higher As Middle East Tensions Boil, But Fed Caution Limits Upside

Trump Says Big Oil Will Invest At Least $100 Billion To Rebuild Venezuela's Oil Infrastructure

In a post on Truth Social, the President announced that he will be meeting all the Big Oil companies’ executives at the White House on Friday.

Citing data from the Energy Information Administration, he noted that inflation-adjusted crude oil prices have declined from peaks above $180 per barrel in 2008 to roughly $60 per barrel today.“Trump’s belief that he has captured a lucrative prize in Venezuela’s oil fields would be an unrealistic fantasy even if he really were in control of a nation that is, in practice, still controlled by the same thugs who controlled it before Maduro was abducted,” Krugman said.The economist stated that the U.S. raid on Venezuela is not for oil, but rather, for “oil fantasies,” adding that the vast amount of oil reserves that President Trump wants to take from the country do not exist.<h2 class="st-heading-2">The Orinoco Belt Problem</h2>Venezuela is currently known to have the largest oil reserves in the world, at nearly 304 billion barrels. Saudi Arabia comes second, with 267 billion barrels of proven reserves, followed by Iran at 209 billion barrels.However, Venezuela’s crude is extremely heavy, resulting in low recovery rates and high production costs, according to Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok.“Venezuela’s self-reported crude oil reserves tripled from around 100 billion barrels in the early 2000s to 300 billion barrels in the late 2000s due to the reclassification of Orinoco Belt heavy oil as ‘proved,’” said Slok in a note on Tuesday.Another problem with extracting crude from Venezuela’s reserves is the country’s aging oil infrastructure. Oil ETFs are rallying as U.S.-Venezuela maritime clashes lift crude prices, adding a geopolitical risk premium.

Global benchmark Brent also slid, dropping below $60 a barrel and moving toward its lowest close in nearly five years.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Supply Keeps Rising As Demand Struggles</h2>The move lower is the latest in a series that's accompanied ongoing market floods of oil. U.S. production hit a fresh record of 13.8 million barrels a day of oil and gas equivalent in September, newly released data from the Energy Information Administration show.Meanwhile, OPEC and its allies, led by Russia, have been adding barrels on a monthly basis since April. The group agreed last month to increase output by a further 137,000 barrels a day in December.Demand hasn't kept pace. Consumption growth has been sluggish, especially in China where broader economic weakness has sapped energy demand. The International Energy Agency has warned that the global oil market could be in surplus of more than 4 million barrels a day next year.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Market Signals Add Pressure</h2>Hopes for a potential cease-fire between Russia and Ukraine have also reduced the geopolitical premium that had supported crude prices for much of the conflict.Additional signs of strain are emerging within the oil market itself. Middle Eastern crude prices have moved into a bearish contango structure, while recent strength in gasoline and diesel pricing has faded, removing another source of support for crude.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Analyst Takes</h2>Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic advisor at Allianz, said in a&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/elerianm/status/2000899148330008670">post on X</a> that the latest move reflects how heavily supply dynamics are weighing on oil.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:595/601;" src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/el_erian_png_a47b1fab42.webp" alt="el-erian.png" width="595" height="601"><figcaption>&nbsp;</figcaption></figure>Meanwhile, James E. Prices had jumped to nearly $80 per barrel when the conflict between Iran and Israel escalated. The top three best-performing oil companies in 2025 were the refiners Valero Energy, Phillips 66, and Marathon Petroleum.Valero EnergySan Antonio, Texas-based Valero has led the pack, logging 46.5% gains this year. The company’s refinery utilization rate stood at 97% in the third quarter, backed by strong global demand and persistently low inventory levels despite high utilization rates. The company’s ethanol segment also logged record production in the third quarter, further boosting its earnings.“Although OPEC began unwinding their production cuts in April, much of that volume was offset by an increase in summer power burn. So it wasn't really until September that we saw any meaningful increase in the export volume from OPEC,” Valero Chief Operating Officer Garry Simmons said in October.Marathon PetroleumThe biggest U.S. refiner by capacity has closely followed Valero, with 39.6% gains. However, the stock took a hit earlier in November, after its third-quarter earnings missed Wall Street’s estimates, hurt by weak results in the renewable diesel segment. Its refinery maintenance costs also rose to $400 million during the quarter, up from $287 million, which hit its bottom line.However, the company also projected a resilient fuel market heading into 2026. “Gasoline and distillate inventory levels remain below five-year averages. Current market fundamentals are indicative of tightness in supply and supportive demand, which we believe will persist into 2026,” said Marathon CEO Maryann Mannen.Phillips 66The refiner, up over 27% this year, has been steadily improving its operating performance amid Elliott Investment Management's efforts to effect change at the company. The refiner topped third-quarter earnings in October and logged an average utilization rate of 99%.The company plans to shut its Los Angeles-area refinery by the end of this year, due to uncertain long-term viability, weak margins, increased renewable diesel, high costs, and market shifts.Williams Co.&nbsp;The energy infrastructure firm Williams, which has risen nearly 20% this year, has benefited from the sustained demand for its pipelines and other facilities amid a boom in electricity demand. In October, the company said it would invest $3.1 billion in two projects to capitalize on the robust growth driven by AI data centers.U.S. data centers will require 22% more grid power by the end of 2025 than they did one year earlier, and will need nearly three times as much in 2030, according to a report by the S&amp;P Global. Artificial intelligence data centers are driving a surge in power demand as U.S. firms spend billions to build infrastructure.ExxonMobilThe oil major has gained over 12.4% this year, despite the volatility in commodity prices. Its production has surged to 4.8 million barrels per day, aided by robust output from the Permian Basin and Guyana.
