U.S. auto safety regulators have announced a recall of 19,077 Nissan LEAF electric cars from the 2021 and 2022 model years due to concerns that the battery could overheat during fast charging, posing a fire risk.&nbsp;Nissan North America stated that the lithium-ion battery could overheat when using a Level 3 charger, thereby increasing the risk of fire. Nissan Recalls Thousands Of LEAF EVs Over Fire Risk Linked To Battery Overheating

The move follows a wave of global auto safety actions in September, with probes into Stellantis, Ford, and Tesla.

Tesla is expected to top China’s electric vehicle market in September with about 72,000 deliveries, leading what Deutsche Bank says could be a month of record volumes for several Chinese EV makers.The figure would represent a 27% increase from August and keep volumes roughly flat from a year earlier, according to a CnEVPost&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/09/24/china-sept-2025-ev-sales-preview/">report</a> citing a Deutsche Bank preview. Order flow was pegged at 73,000 units, driven by demand for the new six-seat, long-wheelbase Model Y L SUV, which was launched in August.&nbsp;Tesla Deliveries for new customers are currently slated for November, according to the company’s Chinese website. In the first three weeks of September, Tesla’s insurance registrations totaled 46,950 units.Nio is forecast to deliver a record 35,000 vehicles,&nbsp;representing a 12% month-on-month increase and a 65% year-on-year rise. The breakdown includes about 15,000 units each from the Nio and Onvo brands and 5,000 from Firefly.&nbsp;The new order flow for Nio in September was estimated at around 100,000 units, a 67% month-on-month increase, led by demand for the flagship ES8 SUV. Deutsche Bank noted that Onvo faced battery supply shortages, shifting allocations from the L60 SUV to the new L90 SUV.Xiaomi EV is expected to deliver 42,000 units, another record, marking a 15% increase from August and about 210% growth from a year ago. The company’s production rose 22% in August to 37,380 units, with capacity expected to exceed 50,000 units per month in the fourth quarter. September order flow was estimated at around 25,000 units, including 15,000 for the YU7 SUV and 10,000 for the SU7 sedan.Xpeng is projected to hit a record 40,000 vehicles, a 6% month-on-month increase. Of these, about 37,000 are expected to be domestic sales and 3,000 overseas. Orders for September were estimated at 45,000 units, down 13% from August due to weaker demand for the G7 SUV and new P7 sedan.Meanwhile, Li Auto is&nbsp;forecasted to reach 35,000 vehicles, up 23% from August but down 35% from last year. Expected new order flow was 50,000-55,000 units, of which 12,000-17,000 were for the newly introduced Li i6 SUV.BYD is estimated to report wholesale volumes of about 380,000 units, up 2% month-on-month but down 9% year-on-year. Tesla Set To Lead China’s EV Market In September, Outpacing Nio, Xiaomi And Xpeng: Deutsche Bank

Chinese EV makers are bracing for a record month as peak sales season drives stronger deliveries.

Tesla recorded 17,300 insurance registrations in China for the week of Sept. 15–21, its strongest performance in three months and up 12.7% from 15,350 the week before.&nbsp;The Model Y SUV led with 10,340 units, while the new six-seat Model Y L added 850 and the Model 3 sedan contributed 6,060, according to a CnEVPost&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/09/23/china-ev-insurance-registrations-week-ending-sept-21-2025/">report</a>.The Model Y L, Tesla’s first three-row version of its best-selling crossover, is proving to be a major growth driver. Since its Aug. 19 launch, orders have surged past 120,000, with nearly 10,000 vehicles selling out per day.&nbsp;Deutsche Bank echoed the momentum, saying dealer feedback showed August orders nearly doubled month-on-month to about 130,000, largely fueled by the long-wheelbase variant.&nbsp;The Model Y L starts at 339,000 yuan ($46,700), about 8% more expensive than the standard version, with an 82-kWh battery offering about 327 miles of range, 0–62 mph acceleration in 4.5 seconds, and nearly 90 cubic feet of cargo space. Deliveries began earlier this month, with handovers expected to ramp up in October.Tesla’s gains came as domestic rivals also posted solid numbers. BYD dominated with 70,700 registrations, Xiaomi followed at 10,800, Xpeng hit 9,200, Li Auto logged 8,600, and Nio reported 6,670 across its main, Onvo, and Firefly brands.&nbsp;Nio’s newly launched third-generation ES8 SUV, unveiled September 20 and delivered from Sept. 21, has yet to meaningfully impact weekly data. Tesla sold 57,152 units in August, a 9.9% year-over-year decrease but a 40.7% increase from July. The YU7 SUV, introduced in June, logged over 240,000 preorders within 18 hours and delivered 24,824 units by August.The recall follows a March 29 crash involving a standard-version SU7 that killed three people after the assisted driving function disengaged one second before the vehicle struck a highway guardrail. Rivian Automotive CEO RJ Scaringe&nbsp;believes the EV maker’s $5.8 billion technology alliance with Volkswagen Group will underpin the German automaker’s planned ID.1, a $20,000 EV he called Europe’s “answer to China.”&nbsp;Speaking at&nbsp;Morgan Stanley’s 13th Annual Laguna Conference on Thursday evening, Scaringe said the launch would draw close attention from competitors.“Every car company will buy it. BYD will buy it. Xiaomi will buy it and XPeng will buy it,” he said. He added that they would be “impressed” by the vehicle’s network architecture, ECU layout and electrical systems, which were designed to scale from VW’s entry-level models to Porsche and Audi flagships.R2 Autonomy&nbsp;To Leap Beyond HighwaysScaringe also spotlighted Rivian’s own product pipeline, led by the $45,000 R2 five-passenger SUV. While Rivian already offers hands-free driving on highways, he said the next step is “hands-free everywhere,” followed by “eyes-off” operation and eventually turn-by-turn autonomy.&nbsp;He said that&nbsp;the shift represents “something like a 50x increase in the number of roads that the vehicle is going to be able to drive on, driving itself.”The company plans to hold an event at the end of the year to showcase its autonomy technology, including hardware details, its compute and perception stack, and demonstrations of the system in operation.Scaringe forecast that hands-free driving on all roads will expand next year, with “eyes-off” autonomy targeted for 2027–2028. He said that if executed well, the feature could “unlock massive pools of demand” and significantly expand Rivian’s customer base.Data Flywheel Powers Rivian’s AI TrainingRivian’s Gen2 system marks a clean break from the Mobileye-based setup in its first vehicles. Scaringe said Rivian brought its compute, sensors and perception fully in-house, enabling the company to build a “data flywheel” to train its autonomy system using real-world driving data collected from its fleet.He said Rivian’s smaller vehicle base compared with Tesla’s is offset by advanced camera and radar systems, particularly 3D imaging radar, which helps improve training in difficult conditions like rain or fog.Not Enough EV Choices Under $50KScaringe&nbsp;reiterated that EV adoption in the U.S. remains stuck at around 8% because of limited options for mainstream buyers. “The number of great choices [under $50,000] is well under the number of fingers on my hand,” he said, pointing to Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y as the only broadly compelling choices today.
