Nio outperformed all major auto peers in August, recording the biggest one-month return while rivals such as Li Auto and BYD lagged behind.U.S.-listed shares of the Chinese EV maker&nbsp;were up 35.5% for the month, outperforming gains in XPeng, which rose 14%, along with 4% gains for both Tesla and Rivian, as well as 0.4% for Xiaomi, and losses of 15% each in both Li Auto and BYD.The Chinese EV maker also recorded its best-ever monthly deliveries, sending 31,305 vehicles to customers last month, representing year-on-year growth of 55% and an increase of 49% from July, after the company surpassed the record it set in December last year, according to a CnEVPost&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/09/01/nio-delivers-31305-cars-aug-2025/">report</a>.&nbsp;The performance was driven by sub-brands Onvo and Firefly, both of which hit record highs. Onvo delivered 16,434 units, including 10,575 of the new L90 SUV, which launched on July 31 and began deliveries the following day.&nbsp;The L90 became the fastest model in Nio’s history to cross 10,000 units in its first month. Firefly delivered 4,346 vehicles in August, an 84% increase from July. The company began sales in Norway and the Netherlands, and sold out a 333-unit limited edition in China within 30 hours. The main Nio brand was weaker, delivering 10,525 vehicles in August, down 48% from the same period a year earlier and 17% from July.From January to August, Nio delivered 166,472 vehicles, up 30% from the prior year, including 54,272 from Onvo and 14,555 from Firefly. Cumulative deliveries stood at 838,036 by the end of August.&nbsp;In 2024, the company delivered 221,970 vehicles, up 39% from 2023, spanning both its premium Nio brand and the lower-cost Onvo line launched in May 2024.The company began pre-sales of its third-generation ES8 SUV on Aug. 21 ahead of an official launch at Nio Day in late September. CEO William Li said reservations were strong, even exceeding those for the Onvo L90.Meanwhile,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/jpmorgan-upgraded-nio-shares-with-price-target-hike/chsHCIGRdjA">JPMorgan upgraded Nio to ‘Overweight</a>’ from “Neutral” in August, raising its price target to $8 from $4.8. Tesla’s New Model Y L Poised To Spark Order Boom In China — Deutsche Bank Sees 100% Monthly Jump

Deutsche Bank also expects Tesla to sell about 53,000 vehicles in China this month, rebounding from July’s slump.

Retail sentiment has turned cautious on Xpeng and Xiaomi ahead of their quarterly earnings on Tuesday, despite both carmakers turning in strong July delivery numbers in China’s cutthroat electric vehicle market.Xpeng&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/x-peng-xiaomi-post-strong-july-sales-as-china-ev-price-war-heats-up-li-auto-nio-data-due-next/chr3oz9RdGY">delivered 36,717 vehicles last month</a>, soaring 229% from a year earlier, the ninth consecutive month of deliveries exceeding 30,000, bringing the total to over 800,000.&nbsp;Meanwhile, Xiaomi crossed the 30,000 milestone for the first time last month on the strength of its SU7 sedan, which has been flying off shelves since its launch, as well as the newly launched YU7 crossover, which undercuts Tesla’s Model Y by 10,000 yuan.&nbsp;The SU7 has a starting price of 215,900 yuan, and the two models combined form the cornerstone of Xiaomi’s 2025 sales target of 350,000 vehicles.On Stocktwits, retail sentiment was ‘bearish’ for both Xpeng and Xiaomi, with message volume ‘high’ for Xpeng and ‘normal’ for Xiaomi.Analysts at Koyfin expect Xpeng’s revenue to surge 120% year-on-year to $1.12 billion, while losses are projected to narrow. GAAP EPS is forecast at a loss of $0.15, compared with a $0.18 loss in the same quarter last year.For Xiaomi, revenue is expected to rise 29% to $15.99 billion, with adjusted EBITDA projected to increase 57% to $1.60 billion. XPeng reported that it delivered 36,717 vehicles last month, a&nbsp;whopping 229% increase from&nbsp;the same period in the previous year, marking its ninth consecutive month with more than 30,000 deliveries.&nbsp;Meanwhile, Xiaomi crossed the 30,000 delivery milestone for the first time, driven by strong demand for its SU7 sedan and the newly launched YU7 crossover, CnEVPost&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/08/01/xiaomi-delivers-30000-cars-jul/">reported</a>.At the time of writing, XPeng shares were up 0.1% at HK$71.70, while Xiaomi slipped 0.3% to HK$53.00 on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.Last month, Xiaomi officially&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/xiaomi-reveals-yu7-pricing-undercutting-tesla-model-y-in-china/chmOuX3RR4w">priced the YU7</a> at 253,500 yuan ($35,322), undercutting Tesla’s Model Y by 10,000 yuan. Pre-orders opened the same day and reportedly topped 200,000 within three minutes.&nbsp;The SU7, Xiaomi’s first EV, starts at RMB 215,900 and competes with Tesla’s Model 3 in China. Combined, the two models form the core of Xiaomi’s ambitious 2025 target of 350,000 vehicle deliveries.XPeng’s July performance brings its cumulative deliveries to over 800,000 units, supported by growth in both domestic and European markets. The company recently launched updated versions of the G6 and G9 models in Europe, with expansion into the UK, Italy, and Ireland helping it reach 46 markets globally.Li Auto and Nio are expected to release their July sales data shortly.&nbsp;Li Auto recently launched its&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/li-auto-s-premium-ev-push-meets-competition-from-nio-s-l90-tesla-s-new-6-seater-model-y/ch8KE5XR5YT">all-electric i8 SUV</a> with a starting price of 321,800 yuan ($44,850), below expectations but still higher than Nio’s battery-swappable Onvo L90 SUV, priced at 279,900 yuan ($38,988).&nbsp;The i8 will start deliveries on Aug. 20.Nio is also rapidly expanding its battery-swap network, while offering a wider range of battery sizes.
