Privacy is at the heart of Zcash's (ZEC) wallet, Zashi - you can tell just by looking at the app.
They don't track you or collect your personal info, just the basic crash data they need to squash bugs. But here's the thing - your phone's OS and iCloud can throw a wrench in those privacy plans if you're not paying attention.
Here's why this matters: when you download any app on your iPhone, it automatically gets backed up to iCloud. That means if you've got Zashi installed and iCloud backups turned on, your transaction details and viewing keys could be sitting on Apple's servers without you realizing it.
Kind of like accidentally leaving your private journal at a coffee shop. Want to prevent this?
It's pretty straightforward. Go to Settings, tap your name, then iCloud > iCloud Backup, find your device, and switch off Zashi.
This keeps your Zashi data out of future backups. Apple claims they'll remove the existing data once you flip that switch, though they're a bit vague on exactly when. If you really want to play it safe, turn this off right after installing Zashi and definitely before setting up your wallet.
There's another option worth considering: Apple's Advanced Data Protection. This feature adds end-to-end encryption to your iCloud backups, meaning only you can access your data (theoretically, not even Apple). If you're okay with iCloud backups in general but want that extra security layer, this could be your sweet spot.
You'll need to set up two-factor authentication and some backup recovery options, but that's a small price for better security.
Bottom line: while Zashi does its part to protect your privacy, iOS has its own way of doing things. Getting the privacy you want might mean tweaking a few settings. The Zashi team actually appreciates when users bring up these concerns - it helps them spot potential issues they might have missed. So keep those privacy settings tight and carry on with confidence.
