Bumble (BMBL) CEO Wolfe Herd and team are reportedly building a new, AI-powered matchmaking app.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Bumble has consulted psychologists and relationship counselors to program a matchmaking AI. The company plans to launch a beta version of the app to select users this fall, according to the report, which notes that it will be separate from the existing Bumble app.
Shares of the company traded nearly 1% lower by Friday noon. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment about BMBL stock stayed within the ‘bearish’ territory over the past 24 hours, while message volume stayed at ‘low’ levels.
The goal behind the AI-powered matchmaking app is to create “the world’s smartest and most emotionally intelligent matchmaker in existence,” the report said, citing Herd. The new app aims to help users build a dating profile based on how they answer questions about past relationships, breakups, and experiences with love and dating, according to the report. It will be built as a large language model, communicating with users in a humanlike way.
The team is unsure of how many matches the system will generate, and the monetization strategy is still being determined, the report said. However, users might also have to pay for each match, it said.
Once it is ready, the new app will get to know the user over multiple sessions, make a dating profile for them, find them matches, and help book reservations for a date, the report said. BMBL stock is down 23% this year and approximately 5% over the past 12 months.
