Ford Motor Co (F) is recalling 499,129 vehicles in the U.S. over concerns that a brake fluid leak can extend the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Thursday.
The recall includes certain 2016-2018 model-year Lincoln MKX and 2015-2018 model-year Edge vehicles.
The remedy for the issue is under development and anticipated to be available by April 2026, the U.S. auto safety regulator said. Once the remedy becomes available, customers can obtain the fix at a Ford or Lincoln dealer, free of charge. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around Ford stayed within ‘neutral’ territory over the past 24 hours, while message volume stayed at ‘low’ levels.
The agency stated that the issue is caused by a ruptured rear brake jounce hose, which results in a progressive brake fluid leak. The root cause of rear brake hose leaks has not been fully determined to date, it added. The driver may notice a change in the brake pedal feel and travel, the agency said. The red brake fluid warning indicator light will also illuminate if the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir reaches a specified level, it added.
According to the NHTSA, Ford is aware of 64 warranty claims, three field reports, and 16 customer complaints related to rear brake jounce hose leaks as of June 9. However, it is not aware of any related accident or injury, it added.
F stock is up 20% this year and approximately 8% over the past 12 months.
