Ford Motor Co. (F) is recalling over 1.07 million vehicles in the U.S. over a software error that may cause the rearview camera image to delay, freeze, or not display when the vehicle is in reverse, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Wednesday.
The recall population includes select model years of Bronco, F-150, Edge, Escape, F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600, Expedition, Transit, Mach-E, Ranger, Mustang, Lincoln Nautilus, Navigator, and Corsair vehicles, including model years from 2021 to 2025.
A frozen rear-view camera display image when reversing can increase the risk of a crash, the U.S. auto safety regulator noted.
To resolve the issue, the accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software will be updated by a dealer or via an over-the-air update, free of cost to the customers, the NHTSA said.
APIM, also known as the Ford Sync module, is a computer module that acts as a central hub for communication and control of various vehicle systems, including audio, infotainment, and connectivity.
While letters notifying vehicle owners of the risk are expected to be mailed on June 16, a second letter is anticipated in the third quarter of 2025 when the remedy is available, the regulator added.
