General Motors (GM) is reportedly pausing output at its Silao plant in Mexico, which makes its best-selling Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, for several weeks, citing routine production adjustments.

The move comes amid continued supply chain stress linked to renewed tariffs under U.S. President Donald Trump, and follows a major safety recall last month.

The Silao assembly complex was shut down during the first two weeks of July and is expected to halt again in the weeks of Aug. 4 and 11, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

While GM confirmed scheduled downtime, it did not disclose exact dates, calling the shutdowns part of a standard production optimization process.

The Silverado and Sierra, GM’s top U.S. sellers, are also produced in Fort Wayne, Flint, and Ontario.

While temporary pauses are typical for model changeovers or maintenance, several weeks of downtime are rare for facilities manufacturing high-demand pickups.

GM sold 278,599 Silverados and 166,409 Sierras in the first half of 2025, up 2% and 12%, respectively.

The supply chain remains under pressure due to Trump's tariffs on imported vehicles and parts, compounded by China’s export restrictions on rare-earth materials critical to automotive electronics.

Meanwhile, GM recalled more than 62,000 Silverado Medium Duty trucks sold in the U.S. in June due to a brake sensor problem that can result in a fire.

The problem was caused by a supplier using an incorrect chemical in a rubber component, which could deteriorate over time and cause brake fluid to leak into the wiring harness, which could short out.

As a precaution, owners were advised to park their trucks outside until repairs could be made.

GM said it would fix the problem free of charge, replacing the component with a redesigned version that will not leak.

The automaker said no injuries or incidents were reported.

The recall covered 10,319 medium-duty trucks sold in 2024 as part of the 560,264 total Silverados delivered in the U.S. that year.

On Stocktwits, retail sentiment for GM was ‘bearish’ amid ‘low’ message volume.

GM’s stock has risen 3.9% so far in 2025.
