Alphabet’s (GOOG/GOOGL) Google has reportedly implemented job cuts in its Cloud division, with the reductions primarily affecting staff in user experience roles, including design and UX research.
According to a report by Business Insider, employees affected by the cuts were notified via email on Monday. The total number of employees affected was not disclosed. The report cited several LinkedIn posts from employees stating that their roles or teams had been affected. It also highlighted how one employee was on an O-1 visa, which requires finding a new position within 60 days or leaving the U.S.
Alphabet’s stock edged 0.9% lower in morning trade. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around the tech giant continued to trend in ‘bearish’ territory over the past day. The job cuts follow an earlier round of layoffs in the Google Cloud division back in February.
Job cuts across the company have been part of a broader cost-cutting strategy outlined by finance chief Anat Ashkenazi, who said one of her top priorities is to control spending as Google invests heavily in AI infrastructure this year. Google, through its parent company Alphabet, has significantly increased its capital expenditure for 2025, raising the planned spending to $85 billion from an earlier estimate of $75 billion.
In August, Google reduced management layers, cutting over a third of managers leading small teams, signaling another wave of workforce streamlining. Last month, the company reportedly cut around 200 staffers in its global business unit, highlighting an ongoing focus on efficiency across multiple divisions.
Despite the layoffs, Google has been investing heavily in AI talent acquisition and retention amid increased competition from players like Meta Platforms (META) and Amazon (AMZN).
