  • The aircraft in question is the first of a fleet currently in production to support the testing, Joby said.
  • The announcement comes on the heels of the company recently saying that it stands the chance of beginning early operations this year in multiple U.S. states.

Air taxi company Joby Aviation, Inc. (JOBY) said on Wednesday that it has begun flight testing its first Federal Aviation Administration-conforming aircraft N547JX as it seeks to advance in its path to receiving certification for commercial service.

The company said FAA pilots will visit its California facility later this year to conduct the testing required to validate the aircraft for commercial service following initial testing by the company’s own pilots.

U.S. Operations Timeline

The announcement comes on the heels of the company recently saying that it stands the chance of beginning early operations this year in multiple U.S. states under the White House-backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program.

Joby now sees itself launching in Arizona, Florida, Idaho, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Utah this year. The White House-backed program allows Joby to deploy its air taxis in the U.S. before receiving certification from the Federal Aviation Administration.

FAA Certification Efforts

However, Joby continues to eye the FAA certification.

“Seeing this aircraft fly means everything to our team. It’s the validation of years of hard work and marks our entry into the final phase of bringing this aircraft to market,” said Didier Papadopoulos, President of Aircraft OEM at Joby.

The aircraft in question is the first of a fleet currently in production to support the testing, Joby said.
