U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday accused Iran of violating the deals of a ceasefire agreement even as a diplomatic delegation led by Vice President JD Vance is gearing up for diplomatic negotiations on Saturday.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that Iran was not honoring its end of the deal to allow oil to pass through the strategic shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz.
“Iran is doing a very poor job, dishonorable some would say, of allowing Oil to go through the Strait of Hormuz. That is not the agreement we have!” the President said.

The U.S. announced a two-week ceasefire in Iran. However, conversations between the U.S. and Iran are already fragile amid continued Israeli attacks across Lebanon. On Wednesday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf claimed that the U.S. had violated three parts of the ceasefire proposal.
In an earlier post on the social media platform, Trump had claimed that reports indicated Iran was charging a fee to allow ships through the route.
“There are reports that Iran is charging fees to tankers going through the Hormuz Strait — They better not be and, if they are, they better stop now!” Trump said. The Strait has been choked since the start of the war about six weeks ago, squeezing global oil supply and subsequently sending oil prices higher.
Despite the back and forth between the two countries, the President has expressed confidence about a peace deal with Iran. According to NBC News, Trump said on Thursday that he was “very optimistic” about a solution.
The President reportedly said that Iran’s top leaders spoke “much differently” in person compared to a press meeting. “They’re much more reasonable,” Trump reportedly said.
“They’re agreeing to all the things that they have to agree to. Remember, they’ve been conquered. They have no military. If they don’t make a deal, it’s going to be very painful,” Trump also added.
Meanwhile, stock markets slipped into the red territory in extended trading hours after ending the day higher up. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY), which tracks the S&P 500 index, was down 0.09% after-hours at the time of writing, after having closed up 0.58% on Thursday.
The Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (QQQ) was down around 0.14% at the time of writing, after having closed 0.68% higher, and the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (DIA) was down 0.06% while writing.
Oil, on the other hand, climbed higher in Thursday’s after-market hours. The United States Oil Fund ETF (USO) was up marginally by about 0.10%, while the ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Crude Oil ETF (UCO) was up about 0.20%.
