President Donald Trump reportedly said on Sunday the Iran war could end “very soon,” signaling openness to talks even as tensions remain high after a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.
Reports also stated that talks with Iran might be held remotely. Trump allegedly told Fox News, saying, “We’re going to do it by phone.” Trump added that he thinks the “Iran war will come to an end very soon, and we will be victorious,” he said, adding that some colleagues were “very reasonable” and some were not.
“Hope Iran will be smart,” added Trump. He said any deal would focus on nuclear issues, and the U.S. will want to negotiate on Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
The president also chastised international allies, stating it had volunteered to send ships only after the war ended, "and that's not good," and said NATO "was not there for us on Iran." He spoke calmly about China, stating that Beijing "could have been much worse than they could have been," that he was "not overly disappointed," but that it "could help more."
This follows President Donald Trump's announcement that a "shooter has been apprehended" during the evacuation of him and other attendees from the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner on Saturday.
Trump called the gunman a "lone wolf" and claimed he was "taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service" during a White House press conference. Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was identified by authorities as the suspect.
According to Trump, one officer was shot but was shielded by a vest. He said, "The vest did the job." According to many people with knowledge of the transfer, the suspect, who authorities claimed was not shot, was taken to Howard University Hospital.
A Stocktwits user, MKRReformed, said the absence of any confirmed Iranian link to the shooting was “encouraging,” adding that the incident does not appear to be driving efforts to escalate or break the ceasefire, tagging Trump Media & Technology Group Corp.
