Litecoin is a cryptocurrency that has evolved from Bitcoin after its own popularity in the industry, this alternative, or ‘altcoin’ has emerged to allow investors to diversify their digital currency package, according to Investopedia. Litecoin is one of the most prominent altcoins and was created by former Google employee and Director of Engineering at Coinbase, Charlie Lee. Litecoin was the first to alter Bitcoin and the most significant difference is that it takes 2.5 minutes for Litecoin to generate a block, or transaction, in comparison to Bitcoin's 10 minutes.  ‘While this matters little to traders, miners who use hardware to run Bitcoin's network cannot switch over to Litecoin. This keeps bigger mining conglomerates away from Litecoin because they cannot easily optimize their profits by swapping to another coin, contributing to a more decentralized experience. Litecoin also has bigger blocks, and more coins in circulation, making it more affordable and swift when transacting,’ Investopedia explained.  As explained above, Litecoin can transact a lot faster than Bitcoin, but there are also a number of other characteristics that investors need to know before trading. Litecoin can handle higher volumes of transactions because of the capability of transacting faster and if Bitcoin attempted to transact on the scale of its altcoin, a code update would be needed. However, Litecoin’s blocks would be larger, but with more ‘orphaned blocks'. The faster block time of litecoin reduces the risk of double spending attacks - this is theoretical in the case of both networks having the same hashing power.  Litecoin Technical Details: The transaction confirmation time taken for Litecoin is about 2.5 minutes on average (as compared to Bitcoin's 10 minutes). The Litecoin network is scheduled to cap at 84 million currency units.   Litecoin has inspired many other popular alternative currencies (eg. Dogecoin) because of its Scrypt hashing algorithm in order to prevent ASIC miners from mining those coins. However it is said that by the end of this year, Scrypt ASIC will enter the mass market.

Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency based on the popular "Doge" Internet meme and features a Shiba Inu on its logo. Dogecoin is a Litecoin fork. Introduced as a "joke currency" on 6 December 2013, Dogecoin quickly developed its own online community and reached a capitalization of US$60 million in January 2014. Compared with other cryptocurrencies, Dogecoin had a fast initial coin production schedule: 100 billion coins were in circulation by mid-2015, with an additional 5.256 billion coins every year thereafter. As of 30 June 2015, the 100 billionth Dogecoin had been mined.   Dogecoin was created by Billy Markus from Portland, Oregon and  Jackson Palmer from Sydney, Australia. Both wanted to create a fun cryptocurrency that will appeal beyond the core Bitcoin audience. Dogecoin is primarily used as a tipping system on Reddit and Twitter where users tip each other for creating or sharing good content. The community is very active in organising fundraising activities for deserving causes.  The developers of Dogecoin haven’t made any major changes to the coin since 2015. This means that Dogecoin could get left behind and is why Shibas are leaving Dogecoin to join more advanced platforms like Ethereum. One of Dogecoin strengths is its relaxed and fun-loving community. However, this is also a weakness because other currencies are way more professional.  To purchase Dogecoin, it involves downloading a crypto wallet, setting up a crypto exchange account and then trading away for your desired crypto currency. Alibaba has unveiled Qwen3 AI models optimized for Apple’s MLX, enabling advanced AI features across iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

NetEase Inc (NTES) shares traded 8.5% higher in Thursday’s premarket after the company reported better-than-expected first-quarter (Q1) earnings.The Chinese gaming player&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://ir.netease.com/system/files-encrypted/nasdaq_kms/assets/2025/05/15/4-33-36/Q1%202025%20Earnings%20Release.pdf">reported</a> a first-quarter FY25 revenue growth of 7.4% year-on-year (YOY) to RMB28.8 billion ($4 billion), beating the analyst consensus estimate of RMB28.4 billion,&nbsp;as per Finchat data.Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of RMB3.50 ($0.48) also beat the consensus estimate of RMB2.74. Adjusted earnings per American depository shares (EPADS) totaled $2.41.Games and related value-added services revenue rose 12.1% to RMB24.0 billion ($3.3 billion). Revenues from the operation of online games accounted for approximately 97.5% of the segment’s net sales.Youdao revenue declined 6.7% YOY to RMB1.3 billion ($178.9 million). NetEase Cloud Music revenue fell&nbsp;8.4% YOY to RMB1.9 billion ($256.1 million).Total operating expenses decreased 14.4% to RMB8.0 billion ($1.1 billion). The gross profit for the quarter&nbsp;increased 8.6% to RMB 18.5 billion ($2.5 billion). NetEase Stock Rises On Strong Q1 Earnings, Retail Turns Bullish

The company’s revenue rose 7%, with games and related services sales gaining 12%.

U.S.-listed shares of Alibaba Group Holding Limited (BABA) dropped 5% in pre-market trading on Thursday after its March quarter revenue fell below Wall Street expectations amid a fierce price battle between China’s e-commerce platforms.The Chinese e-commerce giant <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20250514856295/en/Alibaba-Group-Announces-March-Quarter-2025-and-Fiscal-Year-2025-Results">reported</a> quarterly revenue of RMB236.45 billion ($32.81 billion), marking an increase of 7% year-over-year (YoY), but below an analyst estimate of $33.3 billion, as per Koyfin data.Net income attributable to shareholders came in at RMB12.38 billion ($1.72 billion), marking a jump of 279% YoY, but below estimates of an expected RMB24.7 billion, as cited by CNBC.The company attributed the rise in net income to the change in the value of equity investments, increase in income from operations, and decrease in impairment of equity method investments, partly offset by losses arising from the disposal of subsidiaries.The company’s Taobao and Tmall Group divisions saw total revenue rise 9% YoY to RMB101.37 billion, owing to an improvement in take rate. Customer management revenue jumped 12%, while Chinese commercial wholesale revenue in the segment rose 17%.Revenue from Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group grew 22% YoY to RMB33.58 billion, while Cloud Intelligence Group revenue rose 18% YoY to RMB30.13 billion. Alibaba Stock Drops Pre-Market After Quarterly Revenue Misses Estimates

E-commerce giant Alibaba Group’s (BABA) affiliate Ant Group has <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2025/0425/2025042502627.pdf">entered</a> the brokerage business through the acquisition of a 50.55% controlling stake in Bright Smart Securities &amp; Commodities Group for HK$2.81 billion ($362 million).The news of the acquisition pushed the Hong-Kong listed shares of Bright Smart Securities soaring over 81% on Monday afternoon.According to a Reuters <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/china/bright-smart-securities-rises-record-after-being-acquired-by-ant-group-2025-04-28/">report</a>, Bright Smart chairman Yip Mow Lum is offloading 857.98 million shares of the company at HK$3.28 apiece to Ant Group's Wealthiness and Prosperity Holding.The Ant Group company will then have to make an unconditional mandatory cash offer for all the issued shares, the report stated.On April 25, Ant Group paid a deposit of HK$281.4 million, representing 10% of the total consideration of the sale to Bright Smart.The company said that it intends to maintain Bright Smart's stock exchange listing following the closing of the deal.Founded by billionaire Jack Ma, fintech giant Ant is 33% controlled by Alibaba. The group owns the mobile payment platform Alipay.Ant was planning an IPO in Shanghai in 2020, but the Shanghai Stock Exchange suspended it due to regulatory concerns. The company subsequently dropped its Hong Kong listing as well.Chinese President Xi Jinping personally decided to halt the initial public offering of Ant, The Wall Street Journal had <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/china/china-president-xi-jinping-halted-jack-ma-ant-ipo-11605203556">reported</a>. Ma had criticised the Chinese government’s tight financial regulation for holding back technology development at an event in Shanghai before the IPO. &nbsp;In July 2023, Ant Group was fined RMB 7.12 billion (approximately $98 million) by the People’s Bank of China for non-compliance with regulations, including anti-money laundering requirements.The company was forced to restructure following the scrapping of the IPO. Alibaba Affiliate Ant Group Enters Brokerage Business By Acquiring 55% Stake In Bright Smart Securities For $362M

NYSE-listed shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) (TSM) dipped nearly 1% in Wednesday’s pre-market trading after a Financial Times report suggested the company’s recently announced $100 billion U.S. investment plan reflects an “intention” rather than a “promise.”The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.ft.com/content/34106b33-a6b1-4de7-ae76-e0e801534d9b">report</a> highlighted that while the pledge has temporarily eased political pressure, TSMC has yet to outline specifics on how and when the investment will be deployed, leaving investors uneasy.&nbsp;It noted that TSMC’s latest pledge is significantly different from past commitments. When TSMC first pledged to build semiconductor&nbsp;fabrication plants (fabs) in Arizona during Trump’s first term, it provided detailed construction schedules.&nbsp;The same applied when it expanded its U.S. investment to $40 billion in 2022 and then $65 billion in April 2024.This time, the company has merely stated that it will add three new fabs to the three already announced, along with two facilities for advanced packaging. No precise timeline or breakdown of the $100 billion expenditure has been given.The report also pointed out that despite the scale of the investment, TSMC’s U.S. operations will remain a fraction of its global business.&nbsp;Analysts estimate that by the early 2030s, the Arizona fabs&nbsp;will generate no more than one-third of the company’s total revenue.&nbsp;Industry experts also warn that building six fabs simultaneously is seen as unrealistic due to labor shortages and supply chain constraints. TSMC’s Arizona plants are currently unprofitable, and analysts estimate they will require a 40% gross margin by the early 2030s to sustain overall profitability.Additionally, TSMC’s new R&amp;D unit in Arizona will focus on refining existing chip-making processes rather than developing next-generation technology, reinforcing the view that the company is not shifting its core research operations out of Taiwan, according to the report.It added that some industry insiders speculate that the U.S. government may eventually pressure TSMC to support struggling domestic manufacturers like Intel.
