The January 2024 SEC approval of 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs opened Bitcoin investment to traditional finance participants, and corporations like Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) are using Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset to protect against currency debasement, offering MSTR holders amplified exposure to Bitcoin.   The Bitcoin ecosystem continues to evolve with innovations like Ordinals, which emerged in January 2023 to enable NFT-like functionality directly on Bitcoin, and BRC-20 tokens, an experimental standard for creating fungible tokens using Ordinal inscriptions. BTCFi (Bitcoin Finance) represents emerging financial applications extending beyond Bitcoin's traditional role, with protocols like Babylon allowing Bitcoin holders to stake BTC to secure Proof of Stake chains.

In other words, it is a decentralized blockchain platform that enables developers to build and deploy smart contracts and applications without central authority control. Unlike Bitcoin, which primarily functions as digital currency, Ethereum operates as a programmable global computer where developers can create any type of decentralized service.   The platform hosts over $14 billion in DeFi applications with hundreds of thousands of active users across financial protocols, NFT marketplaces, and gaming platforms. Its transition to Proof of Stake in September 2022 reduced energy consumption by over 99%, addressing environmental concerns while strengthening network security.  The network operates through thousands of independent validator nodes that process transactions and execute smart contracts on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Smart contracts are self-executing programs written in Solidity that automatically carry out agreements when conditions are met, eliminating intermediaries like banks or brokers.   Validators stake ETH as collateral to propose and validate blocks, earning rewards for honest participation while facing penalties for malicious behavior. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. Major milestones include the 2020 Beacon Chain launch, the 2021 London hard fork implementing fee burning, and the 2022 Merge to Proof of Stake.   Ether (ETH) serves multiple functions: paying transaction fees (gas), staking to secure the network and earn 3-5% annual yields, serving as collateral in DeFi protocols, and purchasing NFTs and digital assets. The asset is increasingly adopted by traditional institutions, with publicly traded companies adding ETH to corporate treasuries to generate staking yields while maintaining blockchain exposure, and in 2024, the SEC approved spot Ethereum ETFs, allowing traditional investors to gain exposure through conventional brokerage accounts.  Ethereum's roadmap focuses on dramatically increasing transaction capacity to over 100,000 per second, reducing confirmation times, and enhancing decentralization while maintaining security against future threats like quantum computing.

Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. As AI data centers grow alongside electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy, global copper demand could rise 50% by 2040, raising fresh concerns over supply constraints.A new S&amp;P Global report projects a potential shortfall of nearly 10 million metric tons by 2040 unless investment accelerates. They see annual copper demand rising from 28 million metric tons in 2025 to 42 million metric tons by 2040, a 50% increase driven by electrification.The surge in demand is being driven by four key areas: the rapid expansion of AI and data centers, core economic activity, energy transition, including EVs and renewables, and defense modernization.<h2 class="st-heading-2">AI To Drive Demand</h2>AI, in particular, has emerged as a strong new driver for copper demand. Data centers that support AI workloads are extremely energy-intensive and require extensive copper cabling for power delivery, cooling, and network connections. AI is set to increase copper demand by 2 million metric tons between 2025 and 2040 for both IT infrastructure and the electricity needed to run it, the report added.Global data-center dealmaking surged to a record high through November last year, driven by rising demand for computing infrastructure. More than 100 data-center transactions were completed during the period, with total deal value around $61 billion, according to a Reuters report last month.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Supply Chain Bottlenecks</h2>Copper mining faces declining ore grades, rising extraction costs, long development timelines for new projects, which often exceed 15 years, and environmental and regulatory hurdles. Without substantial investment to expand mining and processing capacity, S&amp;P Global projects a possible shortfall of nearly a quarter of projected demand.While recycling could help relieve some of the supply pressures, coordinated efforts from industry, governments, and investors will be required to speed up new mine development, streamline permitting, and build the infrastructure needed to sustain large-scale copper production, the report added.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Outlook</h2>Market participants are bullish on copper for 2026, citing strong Chinese demand, AI-driven data center growth, a softer US dollar, and potential Fed rate cuts, according to an Argus Media report earlier this week. The XCU/USD pair has gained more than 7% so far in December, and around 40% this year.However, analysts have cautioned that copper prices may be overextended, particularly as demand slows in China, the world’s largest consumer.“Some fabrication plants in China, which buy copper and are sensitive to prices, have cut production or even halted after the recent rally,” Wu Kunjin, head of base metals research at Minmetals Futures Co., told Bloomberg on Monday.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Goldman Sachs Remains Bullish</h2>Goldman Sachs expects copper prices to consolidate in 2026 after a strong rally driven by tariff-related speculation. Prices climbed from around $10,600 a ton in November to $11,700 as traders anticipated higher shipments to the U.S. ahead of a potential tariff on refined copper, tightening supplies outside the country, Goldman said in its 2026 commodities outlook report published last week.The firm noted that ex-U.S. inventories have become a better driver of LME prices in 2025 than global stockpiles, which have risen this year. The bank forecasts copper will average about $11,400 a ton in 2026, assuming tariff uncertainty persists until a mid-2026 announcement, with implementation pushed to 2027.Goldman noted that while ex-U.S. inventories are expected to fall further, much of that decline is already priced into forward markets. Trading giant Mercuria Energy Group recently warned of supply shortages emerging early next year. Still, Goldman believes global inventories may not fall to critically low levels. The firm expects demand to drop about half a million tons short of supply this year, and no shortages until 2029.“While our much smaller 2026 surplus of 160,000 tons moves the market closer to balanced, it means that we do not expect the global copper market to enter a shortage any time soon,” Goldman said, expecting prices to remain range-bound between $10,000 and $11,000 a ton.China’s near-term weakness is another factor tempering Goldman's outlook. The firm projects an 8% year-on-year drop in Chinese consumption in the fourth quarter, followed by a modest 2.8% rebound next year.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Why The Rally Could Continue</h2>Not everyone shares the cautious tone. JPMorgan expects the rally to extend, forecasting copper to reach $12,500 per ton by the second quarter of 2026.
