General Motors (GM) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Cadillac LYRIQ all-wheel drive vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The agency said the anti-lock brake system (ABS) of the vehicles may activate unexpectedly and release brake pressure in the vehicle's service brake system.A release of brake pressure can cause a loss of braking ability, increasing the risk of a crash, it explained.The NHTSA further notified that the electronic brake control module software will be updated through an over-the-air update or by a dealer, free of charge. According to the agency, owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 23. The potential number of units affected amounts to 21,469. Retail sentiment soured for Southwest Airlines and American Airlines after the firms reported their quarterly earnings. Let’s take a look at what did not work for the airlines this time.1. Southwest Airlines: The firm reported a 46.3% decline in its second quarter net income at $367 million while stating that it is taking urgent and deliberate steps to mitigate near-term revenue challenges and implement longer-term transformational initiatives. Operating revenue came in at a record $7.35 billion, in line with the Street estimate while earnings per share (EPS) came in at $0.58, higher than an estimate of $0.52.Meanwhile, the revenue per available seat mile (RASM) decreased 3.8% year-over-year (YoY). Following the results announcement, shares of the firm fell over 6% in Thursday’s pre-market session but stabilized during market open. Retail sentiment soured following the significant decline in profits with the sentiment meter trending in the bearish territory (38/100) supported by high message volume. What is noteworthy is the fact that the firm’s third quarter forecast has not done anything to alleviate the negative sentiment. The latest guidance stands below a Street estimate of $1.10 to $2.60.“American has taken aggressive action to improve its revenue performance, however, the company’s previous sales and distribution strategy will continue to impact its revenue performance and earnings through the remainder of the year,” the firm said. Following the announcement, retail sentiment was trending in the bearish territory for the stock (29/100) supported by extremely high message volumes.Meanwhile, the airline reported an adjusted earnings per share of $1.09 compared to a Street estimate of $1.06. The firm reported a record quarterly revenue of $14.33 billion as compared to a Street estimate of $14.4 billion.American Airlines clarified that the firm has taken swift and aggressive action to reorient its sales and distribution strategy in ways that continue to be customer-centric, while addressing feedback from corporate and agency partners. Earnings per share came in at $0.47 compared to a Street expectation of $0.68. The company, meanwhile, declared a third-quarter regular dividend of $0.15 per share, payable September 3 to shareholders of record at the close of business on August 7.From a segmental basis, the company’s traditional business Ford Blue reported an EBIT of $1.17 billion while its commercial business Ford Pro reported an EBIT of $2.56 billion. The firm stated that demand by commercial customers for Super Duty trucks and Transit commercial vans is outstripping production capacity.The Ford Model e reported an EBIT loss of $1.14 billion amid ongoing industry-wide pricing pressure on first-generation electric vehicles and lower wholesales. These factors more than offset about $400 million in year-over-year cost reductions in the segment, the company said. An anticipated full-year loss of $5 billion to $5.50 billion for Ford Model e is unchanged, with continued pricing pressure and investments in next-generation electric vehicles, it added.The stock is currently trading at a price-to-earnings of 14.09. Stocktwits users, meanwhile, are talking about the cheap valuation of the stock. GM’s second quarter earnings saw two things happen simultaneously that drew retail interest toward the stock and pushed Stocktwits sentiment toward an extreme. The firm topped Wall Street expectations on multiple metrics and also raised its forecast for the year.The automaker reported a revenue of $47.97 billion during the quarter, higher than a Street estimate of $45.46 billion. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) came in at $3.06, beating an estimate of $2.75. GM’s revenue was 7.20% higher on a year-over-year (YoY) basis while its EPS was up over 60%.Following the announcement, shares of the company were trading over 4% higher on Tuesday morning in the pre-market session. GM said it expects adjusted earnings before interest and tax to come in at $13 billion-$15 billion compared to an earlier guidance of $12.50 billion-$14.50 billion. Adjusted automotive free cash flow is expected at $9.5 billion-$11.50 billion as compared to previous guidance of $8.50 billion-$10.50 billion.Only the net income guidance figure saw a minor downward correction with the firm estimating the metric between $10 billion-$11.40 billion as compared to an earlier guidance of $10.10 billion-$11.50 billion. Notably, the firm’s China operations recorded an equity loss of $104 million.Meanwhile, the automaker has decided to indefinitely delay the production of its Cruise Origin autonomous vehicle. GM CEO Mary Barra said in a letter to shareholders that the Cruise team will simplify their path to scale by focusing their next autonomous vehicle on the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt, instead of the Origin. “This addresses the regulatory uncertainty we faced with the Origin because of its unique design. In addition, per-unit costs will be much lower, which will help Cruise optimize its resources,” she said.Bank of America analyst John Murphy has raised the price target on the stock to $85 from $75 while maintaining a ‘Buy’ rating. Given that the stock is currently trading below the $50 mark, the price target leaves an upside potential of over 71% for the stock.

The firm announced earnings per share of $4.14 compared to a Street estimate of $3.93. Revenue came in at $14.99 billion, slightly lower than an estimate of $15.06 billion. The company reiterated expectations of full-year 2024 adjusted diluted earnings per share of $9-$11.United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said multiple airlines have begun to cancel loss-making capacity, and the firm expects leading unit revenue performance among our largest peers in the second half of the third quarter. “United has long been preparing for the moment when industry-wide domestic capacity would adjust - it's now clear that the inflection point is just 30 days away,” he said.The airline has reduced its debt by voluntarily prepaying the remaining $1.80 billion outstanding balance of the MileagePlus term loan with a nearly 11% interest rate during July.Meanwhile, TD Cowen has increased the price target on the airline stock to $80 from $65. The firm has a ‘Buy’ rating on the stock.
