Ethereum is a global, open-source platform for decentralized applications. In other words, it is a decentralized blockchain platform that enables developers to build and deploy smart contracts and applications without central authority control. Unlike Bitcoin, which primarily functions as digital currency, Ethereum operates as a programmable global computer where developers can create any type of decentralized service.   The platform hosts over $14 billion in DeFi applications with hundreds of thousands of active users across financial protocols, NFT marketplaces, and gaming platforms. Its transition to Proof of Stake in September 2022 reduced energy consumption by over 99%, addressing environmental concerns while strengthening network security.  The network operates through thousands of independent validator nodes that process transactions and execute smart contracts on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Smart contracts are self-executing programs written in Solidity that automatically carry out agreements when conditions are met, eliminating intermediaries like banks or brokers.   Validators stake ETH as collateral to propose and validate blocks, earning rewards for honest participation while facing penalties for malicious behavior. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. Major milestones include the 2020 Beacon Chain launch, the 2021 London hard fork implementing fee burning, and the 2022 Merge to Proof of Stake.   Ether (ETH) serves multiple functions: paying transaction fees (gas), staking to secure the network and earn 3-5% annual yields, serving as collateral in DeFi protocols, and purchasing NFTs and digital assets. The asset is increasingly adopted by traditional institutions, with publicly traded companies adding ETH to corporate treasuries to generate staking yields while maintaining blockchain exposure, and in 2024, the SEC approved spot Ethereum ETFs, allowing traditional investors to gain exposure through conventional brokerage accounts.  Ethereum's roadmap focuses on dramatically increasing transaction capacity to over 100,000 per second, reducing confirmation times, and enhancing decentralization while maintaining security against future threats like quantum computing.

Goldman sees more upside as earnings stay strong and geopolitics fade. Here are ETF areas -- from broad market to clean energy -- to ride the rally.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>According to Koyfin, 13 out of 27 analysts covering BE stock have a rating of ‘Buy’ or higher on the company’s shares.&nbsp;</li><li>Meanwhile, six out of 8 analysts covering FCEL stock have a rating of ‘Hold’ on the company’s shares, and two have a ‘Sell’ or ‘Strong Sell’ rating.&nbsp;</li><li>Bloom Energy is set to report its Q1 2026 earnings on April 28, while FuelCell Energy will report its Q2 results on June 5.</li></ul><p>Renewable energy stocks are quickly becoming an attractive investment option amid rising demand for alternative power sources, driven by a boom in artificial intelligence.</p><p>The U.S. Department of Energy forecasts that total energy demand in the country could grow by about 15% to 20% over the next decade due to increased AI use, data center expansion, domestic manufacturing, and electrification across sectors.</p><p><a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/BE">Bloom Energy</a> (BE) and <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/fcel">FuelCell Energy</a> (FCEL) have begun to gain traction due to their fuel cell technology, which generates electricity through an efficient electrochemical reaction. However, Wall Street consensus estimates suggest that one of these stocks may be the better bet.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">Bloom Energy Gets Wall Street Thumbs Up</h2><p>Bloom Energy garnered attention from analysts this week, receiving two price target hikes on Tuesday.</p><p>UBS analyst Manav Gupta raised the price target on the company to $251 from $170 and kept a ‘Buy’ rating on the shares, saying that the shift toward 800 VDC power architectures in data centers was an indicator of rising AI demand and high-density computing power, which could potentially create opportunities for BE’s technologies. Citi analyst Vikram Bagri also raised the price target on Bloom Energy to $229 from $162 and kept a ‘Neutral’ rating on the shares. Meanwhile, the company’s shares hit an intraday high of $234.35 on Tuesday and were up 3% in overnight trading.</p><p>According to data from Koyfin, 13 out of 27 analysts covering the stock have a rating of ‘Buy’ or higher on the company’s shares, with the highest price target of $251 indicating an upside potential of 13.6% compared to its latest close of $220.91. BE shares have already gained about 124% so far this year.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">FuelCell Energy Draws Retail Attention</h2><p>Meanwhile, FuelCell Energy has been gaining more attention from retail traders. On Stocktwits, message volumes around the stock have risen by more than 180% in a day.</p><p>Wall Street’s view on FCEL stock is more muted compared to BE stock. According to data from Koyfin, six out of 8 analysts covering the stock have a rating of ‘Hold’ on the company’s shares, and two have a ‘Sell’ or ‘Strong Sell’ rating. FCEL shares have gained about 16% so far in 2026.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">What Are Analysts Expecting From BE And FCEL?</h2><p>Bloom Energy is set to report its first quarter (Q1) 2026 earnings on April 28, while FuelCell Energy will report its second quarter (Q2) results on June 5.</p><p>According to Stocktwits data, analysts expect BE to post a 64% growth in quarterly revenue to $535.78 million for Q1, versus an expectation for FCEL to post revenue of $41.64 million for Q2, an increase of about 11%.</p><p>The forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of BE is also more attractive than FCEL’s.
