Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. The network operates through thousands of independent validator nodes that process transactions and execute smart contracts on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Smart contracts are self-executing programs written in Solidity that automatically carry out agreements when conditions are met, eliminating intermediaries like banks or brokers.   Validators stake ETH as collateral to propose and validate blocks, earning rewards for honest participation while facing penalties for malicious behavior. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. Major milestones include the 2020 Beacon Chain launch, the 2021 London hard fork implementing fee burning, and the 2022 Merge to Proof of Stake.   Ether (ETH) serves multiple functions: paying transaction fees (gas), staking to secure the network and earn 3-5% annual yields, serving as collateral in DeFi protocols, and purchasing NFTs and digital assets. The asset is increasingly adopted by traditional institutions, with publicly traded companies adding ETH to corporate treasuries to generate staking yields while maintaining blockchain exposure, and in 2024, the SEC approved spot Ethereum ETFs, allowing traditional investors to gain exposure through conventional brokerage accounts.  Ethereum's roadmap focuses on dramatically increasing transaction capacity to over 100,000 per second, reducing confirmation times, and enhancing decentralization while maintaining security against future threats like quantum computing.

Plains All American Pipeline (PAA) has agreed to sell its entire Canadian natural gas liquids (NGL) business to Keyera for about C$5.15 billion ($3.75 billion), as it aims to focus more on crude oil transportation.The assets include more than 1,500 miles of pipeline infrastructure, which have a combined capacity of 575,000 barrels per day (bbl/d), Calgary-based Keyera said.The deal, expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, will also cost $360 million in taxes to Plains.“With core NGL infrastructure in Alberta, the combined platform enables access to high-demand markets through Liquefied Petroleum Gas export access on the West Coast, while also reaching key consumption hubs in eastern Canada and the United States,” Keyera said in a statement.Keyera CEO Dean Setoguchi told Bloomberg News that the companies have been negotiating the deal for six months, but Keyera has been interested in the Plains assets for the past decade.The Canadian firm was able to move forward with the deal after paying down about C$500 million of debt, Setoguchi reportedly said.The transaction is expected to be accretive to distributable cash flow (DCF) per share, delivering mid-teens percentage accretion in the first full year, Keyera said in a statement.Following the closing of the deal, Plains will retain substantially all NGL assets in the United States and will also keep all crude oil assets in Canada.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/PAA">Plains All American stock </a>has risen 3.7% this year, while Plains GP, which holds a controlling interest in the company, is up 2.2%.Several U.S. energy companies have been exiting Canada to focus on their domestic operations. Plains All American Sells Canadian NGL Business To Keyera For $3.75B

Williams Co (WMB) was in focus on Monday after the company said it would invest about $1.6 billion to provide an unnamed firm with committed power generation and associated gas pipeline infrastructure.The pipeline operator said that, assuming the permits are received in a timely manner, the project is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026.Williams said that the project is backed by a 10-year, primarily fixed-price power purchase agreement, with an option for the investment-grade customer to extend it. Williams Stock In Spotlight On $1.6B Investment For New Energy Infrastructure Project, Retail’s Bullish

Kinder Morgan (KMI) stock garnered retail attention on Thursday after the company fell short of the Wall Street estimate for fourth-quarter profit.On Wednesday, the company reported adjusted net earnings of $0.32 per share, narrowly missing the average analysts’ estimate of $0.33 per share, according to Koyfin data.The energy pipeline operator’s fourth-quarter revenue fell to $3.99 billion from $4.04 billion last year, driven by a 7% fall in natural gas gathering volumes primarily from Haynesville and Bakken due to lower commodity prices.However, the natural gas pipelines segment's core earnings rose compared to last year, driven by higher contributions from its Texas Intrastate system and additional contributions from its STX Midstream acquisition.Kinder Morgan also said it would build a 216-mile pipeline named Trident Intrastate, carrying about 1.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas from Katy to the liquefied natural gas corridor near Port Arthur in Texas.The project announcement follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order on Monday, which lifted the pause on new liquefied natural gas permits imposed by the Biden administration.The Houston-based firm aims to capitalize on a surge in natural gas demand, also driven by artificial intelligence data centers. At the end of the quarter, it had a project backlog of $8.1 billion. &nbsp;The company said its total refined products transport volumes were up 2%, and crude and condensate volumes were down 5% compared to the fourth quarter of 2023.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/KMI">Kinder Morgan</a> forecasted its 2025 net income to rise 8% to $2.8 billion.“With robust market fundamentals and a new (Presidential) Administration committed to expediting energy infrastructure projects, the future looks bright,” Executive Chairman Richard D.
