The fee may be proportional to the amount of computation required by the transaction, similar to Ethereum’s concept of “gas”. Fee distribution is done in-protocol and a protocol specification is described here.  As staking tokens, ATOM can be “bonded” in order to earn block rewards. The economic security of the Cosmos Hub is a function of the amount of ATOM staked. The more ATOM that are collateralized, the more “skin” there is at stake and the higher the cost of attacking the network. Thus, the more ATOM there are bonded, the greater the economic security of the network.  Atom holders may govern the Cosmos Hub by voting on proposals with their staked ATOM.

As a result, the expenditure does not weigh down on the bottom line of the companies all at once.“Most of the companies shown packaged their FY’26 capex forecasts with FY’26 profit forecasts so investors could see the current year impact on profits,” Black said.For his third point, Black said eventually tech CEOs would see that the capex splurge would not pay off as the return on investment would fall short over everyone’s bet on the same play.“There will be an awakening by tech CEOs that much of this capex splurge won’t pay off — i.e., ROI will fall short of the cost of capital — as everyone is betting on the same AI payoff, and not everyone will win,” he said.“Once this realization occurs future capex plans will be scaled back,” Black added.Black also said that Google parent Alphabet Inc. (GOOG, GOOGL) and Meta Platforms Inc. (META) both looked compelling at their current price-to-earnings ratio.“$GOOG at a 2026 P/E of 28x vs 20% long-term eps growth (1.4x PEG) and $META at a 2026 P/E of 22x vs +18% EPS growth (1.2x PEG) both look compelling here,” he said.<h2 class="st-heading-2">AI Capex Spending</h2>In its latest earnings, Amazon.com (AMZN) said it will allocate $200 billion to capital expenditure in 2026. Meanwhile, Alphabet guided its capex for 2026 between $175 billion and $185 billion, well above street expectations of $120 billion.Meta increased its capex for 2026, quoting a range of $115 billion to $135 billion, up considerably from $72.22 billion spent in 2025.While the larger market has expressed concerns over the massive expenditure, CEO of Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) Jensen Huang <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/nvda-shares-rally-as-huang-says-demand-for-ai-is-sky-high/cZbFYwgR4Fp">said</a> earlier on Friday that these investments are “appropriate and sustainable.”In a CNBC interview, he noted that the demand for AI is now skyrocketing during a “once-in-a-generation infrastructure buildout,” adding that the companies are going to see a positive impact to their cash flows.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Market Reaction</h2><a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/GOOG">Shares of GOOG</a> closed down almost 2.5% on Friday, and have gained over 67% in the past year. (AMZN) have been slipping lower since the company announced its fourth-quarter (Q4) 2025 earnings results on Thursday, and disclosed a capex of $200 billion for 2026, up from about $130 billion reported in 2025.Meanwhile, Alphabet Inc. (GOOG, GOOGL) said it expects capex for 2026 to be between $175 billion and $185 billion, and Meta Platforms Inc. (META) also increased its capex for 2026 considerably, within a range of $115 billion to $135 billion.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Labor Market Concerns</h2>Labor market concerns also weighed down on stocks. Although the January jobs report is delayed due to a partial government shutdown, Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas said U.S. employers cut 108,435 jobs during the month, levels not seen since 2009.The firm also said hiring plans fell to 5,306. Dow Closes Over 50,000 For The First Time, S&P 500 Edges Higher Amid Tech Revival: NVDA, AVGO, AMD, CAT In Focus

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed over 2.3% to a 50,000 record, while the S&P 50 increased 1.72%.

Americans deserve both price stability and full employment, and we can’t take either for granted.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Labor Market Worries</h2>Daly noted that while “growth is good,” consumer spending has been reassuring, the job market is recovering, and productivity gains are curbing costs for businesses, workers are not as optimistic.She said the evidence comes from the latest sentiment surveys, “which show that Americans are expecting fewer jobs to be available and the unemployment rate to rise.”Daly said that the disconnect between businesses and workers makes sense. “We’ve been in a relatively low-hiring, low-firing environment for some time. The job cuts were led by the transportation industry, followed by the technology sector, the firm said.At the end of last month, Amazon <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/amazon-layoffs-16000-jobs-january-2026/cmygbX2R4iw">laid off</a> about 16,000 employees. United Parcel Service (UPS) <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/ups-stock-rises-q4-beat-strong-2026-guidance/cmyavvvR4Le">cut</a> 48,000 jobs in 2025 and announced another 30,000 job cuts this year.Oracle is also likely to <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/oracle-analyst-forecasts-30k-layoffs-divestiture-as-cloud-co-looks-to-ease-debt-concerns/cZbg0aRR4jD">cut</a> 30,000 jobs, affecting about 18.5% of its total global strength as of May 2025.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Interest Rates</h2>Meanwhile, the Fed held benchmark interest rates steady at 3.50%–3.75% in its first policy meeting of 2026, noting that “inflation remains somewhat elevated.”The Fed aims for a 2% average annual inflation rate over the long run, while the inflation rate is currently at 2.7% in the country.Meanwhile, U.S. equities were trading in green on Friday at the time of writing. The Labor Department, which houses the BLS, was funded only through Jan. 30.While the Senate has voted to extend funding, the measure must still pass the House, which is scheduled to return on Monday.To avoid a prolonged shutdown, the Senate separated DHS funding from other agencies and approved a two-week stopgap after reaching a deal with the White House to negotiate Democratic demands. President Donald Trump’s administration agreed to temporarily fund DHS at current levels.The BLS, still recovering from last year’s record shutdown, also produces CPI and other key economic data that may be affected.Meanwhile, U.S. equities rose in Monday’s mid-day trade. Funds were agreed to be deployed by 2029. In exchange, Trump agreed to reduce tariffs on South Korea, matching terms with Japan.However, the deal terms have not yet been finalized from South Korea. “Our Trade Deals are very important to America. In each of these Deals, we have acted swiftly to reduce our TARIFFS in line with the Transaction agreed to. Gates noted in a blog post that AI had progressed enough to begin disrupting software development and warned that once it grew more capable, job disruption would be more immediate. These next seven days, starting tomorrow, are higher more than 77% of times. You look at all seven day combinations out there, none are more likely to be higher,” Detrick&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/us-equities-could-hit-new-highs-santa-claus-rally-says-ryan-detrick/cLeppGTREHd">said</a> on Tuesday.Jeremy Siegel, professor emeritus of finance at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, on Tuesday&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/wharton-jeremy-siegel-2026-good-year-for-risk-assets/cLeplcAREuj">stated</a> that 2026 has the ingredients needed to be a good year for risk assets.However, for his prediction to materialize, Siegel stated that Washington will have to avoid self-inflicted disruptions and that productivity continues to hold up.“One underappreciated tailwind into year-end is productivity: if productivity holds up while nominal demand cools, inflation can fall without the economy needing to break. That’s the best possible mix for both equities and longer-duration assets,” he said.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What If Santa Fails To Show Up?</h2>But what happens when a Santa Claus rally fails to materialize? According to a report by Seeking Alpha citing Ari H. Wald, head of technical analysis at Oppenheimer, the subsequent one or two quarters tend to be below average for equities.“Since 1928, the S&amp;P 500 has averaged a 1% loss in the subsequent three months following a negative [Santa Claus rally] vs. an average 2.6% gain following a positive [one].
