In a key reform, the Indian government has reportedly opened the door for private-sector professionals to compete for top leadership roles in public-sector banks (PSBs), including for the position of Managing Director (MD) at the State Bank of India (SBI), a first in the country’s banking history.According to an NDTV report, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved new consolidated guidelines for appointing Whole-Time Directors (WTDs), including Chairpersons, CEOs, MDs, and Executive Directors (EDs), across PSBs and state-owned insurance companies.Under the revised framework, private-sector candidates can now apply for the SBI MD post if they have at least 21 years of professional experience, including 15 years in banking, and have served either two years at the board level or three years at the top executive level below the board.To ensure fair evaluation, the Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) has been empowered to engage independent HR agencies to assess private-sector applicants.The government has also eliminated the traditional Annual Performance Appraisal Reports (APARs) from the process, introducing a more modern, performance-driven assessment model.The Nifty PSU Bank index closed 1.67% higher on Friday, with all 12 constituents ending in the green. India To Allow Private-Sector Executives To Compete For Top Posts In PSU Banks

The government has cleared a landmark reform that poses a game-changer for SBI and other PSU banks

The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has maintained the repo rate at&nbsp;5.50% in its latest review. The monetary policy stance remains neutral.This marks a second consecutive pause from India’s central bank after three rate cuts earlier this year. This comes amid the backdrop of GST reforms, H-1 B visa concerns, and uncertainty over US tariffs.The Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Sanjay Malhotra, said that the growth-inflation narrative has altered since the last policy meeting in August. He added that while growth has remained resilient, tariff-related headwinds weigh on the outlook.&nbsp;RBI has raised FY26 GDP growth estimates to&nbsp;6.8% from 6.5% earlier, and revised the FY26 CPI inflation forecast lower to 2.6% from 3.1% earlier.&nbsp;This policy decision, taken by the MPC, maintains the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate at 5.25% and the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) and Bank Rate at 5.75%.&nbsp;Indian benchmark indices held firm in trade following the policy announcement, with the Nifty index trading below 24,700 and the Sensex above 80,550, while the Nifty Bank index rose 0.5% at 10:30 am.Growth Outlook RaisedThe growth forecast for FY26 has been revised upwards, following the strong show of 7.8% growth in the April–June quarter.Quarterly growth projections now stand at:<ul><li>Q2: 7% (from earlier 6.7%)</li><li>Q3: 6.4% (from earlier 6.6%)</li><li>Q4: 6.2% (from earlier 6.3%)</li></ul>Growth for Q1 FY27 has also been adjusted to 6.4% from the earlier 6.6%.Inflation Outlook Cut&nbsp;The RBI has revised its average headline inflation projection for FY26 downwards to 2.6% from the previous 3.1%, due to the impact of the GST reform and a more-than-expected decline in food prices.The fourth bi-monthly meeting of the MPC for FY26, chaired by the RBI Governor, was held from September 29 to October 1Central Bank’s Moves In 2025Since February, the RBI has reduced the benchmark repurchase rate by 100 basis points to 5.5%, which includes an unexpectedly large cut in June. In its last review, the central bank had held the status quo on rates.&nbsp;MPC reviews are held bi-monthly to decide interest rates, inflation, and growth estimates. India’s Central Bank Holds Rates Again; Lifts FY26 GDP Growth Forecast To 6.8%

Canara Bank shares surged over 3% on Tuesday after its subsidiary, Robeco Asset Management Company, received approval from the capital markets regulator, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), on its revised draft prospectus for the upcoming initial public offering (IPO). Over the past month, this PSU bank stock has rallied 19%.&nbsp;“Canara Robeco Asset Management Company Limited, a subsidiary of Canara Bank, has received approval from SEBI for UDRHP (herein referred to as 'Updated Draft Red Herring Prospectus') on September 29, 2025,” the bank said in an exchange filing on Tuesday.&nbsp;The Canara Robeco Asset Management Company (AMC) IPO is an entirely Offer-for-Sale (OFS) of approximately 4.98 crore equity shares. In this IPO, no fresh capital is being raised by the AMC itself; instead, the existing promoters (Canara Bank and ORIX Corporation Europe NV) will sell their shares.&nbsp;Canara Bank will sell approximately 2.59 crore shares, and ORIX will offer around 2.39 crore shares, reducing their respective stakes. Canara Bank currently holds 51% ownership in the AMC, with ORIX holding the remaining 49%.This move paves the way for India’s second-oldest asset management company to list on the exchanges without increasing its capital.&nbsp;Canara Robeco Asset Management Company filed preliminary papers with the SEBI on April 24 this year. Technical charts indicate a bullish trend, with retail sentiment remaining firmly positive.

This is significant as generic medicines constitute the majority of India's pharmaceutical exports to the US, and these will not be affected.Hindustan Zinc ended nearly 4% higher, driven by record rally in silver prices.&nbsp;Vascon Engineers ended 20% higher after the company inked a pact with Adani Infrastructure.Shares of Bharat Electronics (BEL) closed 1% higher after the Indian Army issued a tender worth nearly ₹30,000 crore for the QRSAM (Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile) project.And Azad Engineering ended 2% higher on securing a ₹651 crore contract with a Japanese company. SEBI-registered analyst&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/equitycharcha">Ashok Kumar Aggarwal of Equity Charcha&nbsp;</a>noted that the stock had been in a consolidation phase, trading between ₹1,529 and ₹1,664 over the last six weeks.
