<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Authorities will also guide local governments to use the subsidies in a balanced and orderly manner and to pace implementation appropriately, according to a statement from the National Development and Reform Commission.</li><li>The move comes as China seeks to boost domestic demand, making it a top economic priority for 2026.</li></ul>China on Tuesday announced the first batch of 62.5 billion yuan ($8.92 billion) in subsidies to support the trade-in of consumer goods for 2026.The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.ndrc.gov.cn/xxgk/jd/jd/202512/t20251230_1402850.html">said</a> in a statement that the government will sell ultra-long special sovereign bonds to local governments in 2026 to support consumer programs and meet consumption demands during peak seasons such as New Year's Day and the Spring Festival.The NDRC authorities will also guide local governments to use the subsidies in a balanced and orderly manner, pace implementation appropriately, and strengthen fund supervision throughout the entire chain to maximize the policy's impact, it added.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Bolstering Domestic Demand</h2>China is looking to boost domestic demand and has made it a top economic priority for 2026.According to an earlier report from Bloomberg, the Politburo, the Communist Party’s decision-making arm led by President Xi Jinping, noted that domestic demand must be a primary driver for a strong market in its December meeting.The move to boost domestic demand comes amid an economic slowdown over the past year, driven by weakening domestic demand, declining investment, sluggish industrial output, and deflationary pressures. Chinese households have also cut back on their spending due to a soft labor market and pressures in the real estate industry. The U.S. tariffs have also prompted the country’s senior leaders to increase China’s self-reliance in multiple industries.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Future Outlook</h2>While the Chinese economy has clocked a year-to-date GDP growth of 5.2% year-on-year as of December, it is projected to grow only 4.4% in 2026, according to a <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/press-release/2025/12/11/advancing-reforms-can-enhance-prospects-china-economic-update">report</a> from the World Bank. It expects the existing headwinds to persist next year as well.The <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/CHIS">Global X MSCI China Consumer Staples ETF</a> (CHIS), which tracks Chinese consumer stocks, has declined by more than 34% over the last year. Amid inflation and consumer trade-down trends, XLP emerges as a defensive ETF for stability-focused investors.  

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Analysts expect Walmart to report a 4.3% increase in sales and a 3.7% rise in adjusted EPS for the third quarter, with some expecting a slight upward revision to the annual forecast.</li><li>Some brokerages highlight support from Walmart’s digital initiatives, including a greater push in digital advertising and e-commerce.</li><li>Stocktwits sentiment for WMT shifted to ‘bullish’ from ‘bearish’ heading into Thursday; Walmart will report results in premarket hours.</li></ul>Walmart Inc. is expected to deliver steady results for its recently completed fiscal third quarter, with guidance for the crucial holiday period in sharp focus for analysts and investors.&nbsp;The nation’s largest retailer has navigated a turbulent period of inflation and shifting consumer behavior by keeping prices tight and leveraging its dominant position in essentials like groceries.Notably, Walmart had raised its full-year sales and profit forecast in August, forecasting net sales growth of 3.75% to 4.75% and adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.52 to $2.62 for its current fiscal year, which ends in January 2026.Walmart is likely to post a clean Q3 print on stability of its core markets and steady alternative revenue growth, UBS Securities said in a research note last week.&nbsp;The company benefited from a traffic surge driven by more events in Q3, as well as sustained e-commerce momentum from its advertising growth and marketplace expansion, the research firm said, while reiterating its ‘Buy’ rating on the company’s shares.Bank of America analysts said this month that Walmart’s advertising momentum, along with easing pressure from general liability claims, should help support margins. The firm also noted two months ago that Walmart is emerging as a leader in applying artificial intelligence within the retail sector.Oppenheimer analysts said that strength in Walmart’s non-core businesses could prompt the retailer to raise its 2026 outlook, likely by increasing only the lower end of its EPS range.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Consensus View</h2>Analysts expect Walmart’s third-quarter revenue to increase 4.3% to $175.17 billion, according to Koyfin. At that level, it would be the fifth time in the last six quarters that year-over-year topline growth is below 5%. The Q4 growth projection is 4.5%.Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) are expected to increase by 3.7% to $0.60.Adjusted earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margin is expected to be 4.07%, the lowest in the last four quarters, but above the 3.99% in Q3 last year.&nbsp;The results would follow a critical leadership announcement: Walmart announced last week that John Furner, the CEO of Walmart’s U.S. business, will succeed longtime CEO Doug McMillon in February.<h2 class="st-heading-2">WMT Share Trend</h2>Walmart’s shares hit an all-time high after it announced a partnership with OpenAI that lets users shop Walmart products directly from ChatGPT. They have since declined by about 8%.In a tumultuous year, particularly for retailers, the WMT stock has emerged resilient. WMT is up 11.4% year-to-date, compared to the 13% gains in the benchmark S&amp;P 500. Target is planning a bigger push on new stores and remodels next year, with an outlay of $1 billion.Home improvement goods retailers Home Depot and Lowe’s Companies also cut their annual profit forecasts after posting mixed results earlier this week.On the other hand, TJX Cos., which operates discount chains T.J. The analyst reduced the stock's price target to $1.50 from $2 and maintained a ‘Sell’ rating, citing the company’s weak market position and fundamentals, the Fly reported.The company announced on Thursday that the lock-up restrictions on certain of the 316.15 million shares issued on Oct. 15 in connection with the note offering would expire at 5 p.m. ET that day.Separately, in an 8-K filing, Beyond Meat disclosed preliminary results for the September quarter, expecting revenue of about $70 million compared to the guidance of $68 million to $73 million and the Fiscal.ai-compiled consensus of $69.79 million.&nbsp; The company expects a gross margin of 10%-11%, including $1.7 million in expenses related to suspending China operations. The company also flagged a non-cash impairment charge related to certain of its long-lived assets that haven’t been included in the preliminary numbers.On Thursday, Beyond Meat’s stock plunged about 21% as traders took profit after a strong two-day rally. The recent downtrend followed a substantial two-day advance. Beyond Meat stock jumped about 128% on Monday and then surged another 146% on Tuesday. Much of the buoyancy in the El Segundo, California-based company’s stock was due to the distribution agreement it clinched with Walmart.
