Xiaomi recently launched a customization service for its 529,900-yuan ($74,000) SU7 Ultra electric sedan, allowing buyers to personalize the trim and paint jobs for an additional 100,000 yuan.&nbsp;The program, also available for the 329,900-yuan YU7 Max SUV, offers extras like 24-karat gold hood badges and forged wheel hubs, echoing the bespoke options long offered by brands like Porsche and Bentley, according to a Bloomberg&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-10-05/porsche-and-xiaomi-face-off-over-custom-model-buyers-in-china">report</a>.The smartphone maker’s move pits it directly against Porsche, which is expanding its Exclusive Manufaktur program in China as sales of its Taycan EV slow. Xiaomi has launched a luxury customization program for its SU7 Ultra electric sedan, offering gold badges, bespoke paint jobs, and premium trims to attract high-end buyers. 

U.S. auto safety regulators have announced a recall of 19,077 Nissan LEAF electric cars from the 2021 and 2022 model years due to concerns that the battery could overheat during fast charging, posing a fire risk.&nbsp;Nissan North America stated that the lithium-ion battery could overheat when using a Level 3 charger, thereby increasing the risk of fire. Nissan Recalls Thousands Of LEAF EVs Over Fire Risk Linked To Battery Overheating

The move follows a wave of global auto safety actions in September, with probes into Stellantis, Ford, and Tesla.

Tesla is expected to top China’s electric vehicle market in September with about 72,000 deliveries, leading what Deutsche Bank says could be a month of record volumes for several Chinese EV makers.The figure would represent a 27% increase from August and keep volumes roughly flat from a year earlier, according to a CnEVPost&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/09/24/china-sept-2025-ev-sales-preview/">report</a> citing a Deutsche Bank preview. Order flow was pegged at 73,000 units, driven by demand for the new six-seat, long-wheelbase Model Y L SUV, which was launched in August.&nbsp;Tesla Deliveries for new customers are currently slated for November, according to the company’s Chinese website. In the first three weeks of September, Tesla’s insurance registrations totaled 46,950 units.Nio is forecast to deliver a record 35,000 vehicles,&nbsp;representing a 12% month-on-month increase and a 65% year-on-year rise. The breakdown includes about 15,000 units each from the Nio and Onvo brands and 5,000 from Firefly.&nbsp;The new order flow for Nio in September was estimated at around 100,000 units, a 67% month-on-month increase, led by demand for the flagship ES8 SUV. Deutsche Bank noted that Onvo faced battery supply shortages, shifting allocations from the L60 SUV to the new L90 SUV.Xiaomi EV is expected to deliver 42,000 units, another record, marking a 15% increase from August and about 210% growth from a year ago. The company’s production rose 22% in August to 37,380 units, with capacity expected to exceed 50,000 units per month in the fourth quarter. September order flow was estimated at around 25,000 units, including 15,000 for the YU7 SUV and 10,000 for the SU7 sedan.Xpeng is projected to hit a record 40,000 vehicles, a 6% month-on-month increase. Of these, about 37,000 are expected to be domestic sales and 3,000 overseas. Orders for September were estimated at 45,000 units, down 13% from August due to weaker demand for the G7 SUV and new P7 sedan.Meanwhile, Li Auto is&nbsp;forecasted to reach 35,000 vehicles, up 23% from August but down 35% from last year. Expected new order flow was 50,000-55,000 units, of which 12,000-17,000 were for the newly introduced Li i6 SUV.BYD is estimated to report wholesale volumes of about 380,000 units, up 2% month-on-month but down 9% year-on-year. Tesla Set To Lead China’s EV Market In September, Outpacing Nio, Xiaomi And Xpeng: Deutsche Bank

Chinese EV makers are bracing for a record month as peak sales season drives stronger deliveries.

Tesla recorded 17,300 insurance registrations in China for the week of Sept. 15–21, its strongest performance in three months and up 12.7% from 15,350 the week before.&nbsp;The Model Y SUV led with 10,340 units, while the new six-seat Model Y L added 850 and the Model 3 sedan contributed 6,060, according to a CnEVPost&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/09/23/china-ev-insurance-registrations-week-ending-sept-21-2025/">report</a>.The Model Y L, Tesla’s first three-row version of its best-selling crossover, is proving to be a major growth driver. Since its Aug. 19 launch, orders have surged past 120,000, with nearly 10,000 vehicles selling out per day.&nbsp;Deutsche Bank echoed the momentum, saying dealer feedback showed August orders nearly doubled month-on-month to about 130,000, largely fueled by the long-wheelbase variant.&nbsp;The Model Y L starts at 339,000 yuan ($46,700), about 8% more expensive than the standard version, with an 82-kWh battery offering about 327 miles of range, 0–62 mph acceleration in 4.5 seconds, and nearly 90 cubic feet of cargo space. Deliveries began earlier this month, with handovers expected to ramp up in October.Tesla’s gains came as domestic rivals also posted solid numbers. BYD dominated with 70,700 registrations, Xiaomi followed at 10,800, Xpeng hit 9,200, Li Auto logged 8,600, and Nio reported 6,670 across its main, Onvo, and Firefly brands.&nbsp;Nio’s newly launched third-generation ES8 SUV, unveiled September 20 and delivered from Sept. 21, has yet to meaningfully impact weekly data. Rivian CEO Says Volkswagen’s $20K EV Built On Its Tech Is Europe’s ‘Answer To China’ — And Even BYD, Xiaomi, XPeng Will Buy It

Global automakers are reportedly relying more on Chinese technology to fast-track electric vehicles, with Ford, Toyota, Renault and Volkswagen joining Audi in adopting Chinese EV platforms, software and powertrains to cut costs and shorten timelines.Audi’s turning point came in 2021, when its executives were stunned by the Zeekr 001, a long-range EV with European styling. “The Zeekr 001 back then shocked quite everyone,” said Stefan Poetzl, president of SAIC Audi Sales and Marketing, according to a Reuters&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/china-inside-how-chinese-ev-tech-is-reshaping-global-auto-design-2025-09-11/">report</a>.&nbsp;In response, Audi partnered with SAIC to develop the Audi E5 Sportback, built in just 18 months with Chinese batteries, electric drive systems, infotainment and advanced driver assistance. The $33,000 model will be delivered to Chinese buyers this month.Other global players are pursuing similar strategies. Toyota is co-developing China-dedicated models with Guangzhou-based GAC, while Volkswagen has expanded plans with Xpeng that cover both EV and fuel models.&nbsp;Renault built the Dacia Spring on a Dongfeng platform and is apparently developing a new electric Twingo in Shanghai with support from Launch Design. Ford is actively seeking a Chinese partner, with CEO Jim Farley praising local models such as Xiaomi’s SU7 sedan.Stellantis has already taken the step of licensing technology: CEO Zhu Jiangming said its partner Leapmotor will sell EVs overseas and is in talks with other brands to license its platform.&nbsp;Abu Dhabi-based CYVN Holdings, an investor in Nio, has also reportedly built a premium EV using Nio’s chassis and software, with plans to sell under the McLaren brand.Analysts say the model resembles the “Intel Inside” campaign of the 1990s, where Chinese EV makers package chassis, batteries and software into ready-made kits for foreign manufacturers.&nbsp;The approach saves billions in R&amp;D and years of development, while providing Chinese companies with valuable licensing revenue amid a bruising domestic price war and mounting trade tensions abroad.“It is a very smart, win-win solution,” said Will Wang, general manager of Shanghai-based consultancy Autodatas. Marco Santino of Oliver Wyman added that the “firepower” of China’s fierce EV competition allows legacy carmakers to bring higher-quality products to market more quickly.But some warn of long-term risks. Ford, Toyota, Renault, Volkswagen, Audi Turn To Chinese EV Platforms — A New ‘Intel Inside’ For Cars

Global carmakers are cutting costs and years off development by licensing ready-made Chinese EV platforms, batteries and software.

Nio outperformed all major auto peers in August, recording the biggest one-month return while rivals such as Li Auto and BYD lagged behind.U.S.-listed shares of the Chinese EV maker&nbsp;were up 35.5% for the month, outperforming gains in XPeng, which rose 14%, along with 4% gains for both Tesla and Rivian, as well as 0.4% for Xiaomi, and losses of 15% each in both Li Auto and BYD.The Chinese EV maker also recorded its best-ever monthly deliveries, sending 31,305 vehicles to customers last month, representing year-on-year growth of 55% and an increase of 49% from July, after the company surpassed the record it set in December last year, according to a CnEVPost&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/09/01/nio-delivers-31305-cars-aug-2025/">report</a>.&nbsp;The performance was driven by sub-brands Onvo and Firefly, both of which hit record highs. Onvo delivered 16,434 units, including 10,575 of the new L90 SUV, which launched on July 31 and began deliveries the following day.&nbsp;The L90 became the fastest model in Nio’s history to cross 10,000 units in its first month. Firefly delivered 4,346 vehicles in August, an 84% increase from July. The company began sales in Norway and the Netherlands, and sold out a 333-unit limited edition in China within 30 hours. The main Nio brand was weaker, delivering 10,525 vehicles in August, down 48% from the same period a year earlier and 17% from July.From January to August, Nio delivered 166,472 vehicles, up 30% from the prior year, including 54,272 from Onvo and 14,555 from Firefly. Cumulative deliveries stood at 838,036 by the end of August.&nbsp;In 2024, the company delivered 221,970 vehicles, up 39% from 2023, spanning both its premium Nio brand and the lower-cost Onvo line launched in May 2024.The company began pre-sales of its third-generation ES8 SUV on Aug. 21 ahead of an official launch at Nio Day in late September. CEO William Li said reservations were strong, even exceeding those for the Onvo L90.Meanwhile,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/jpmorgan-upgraded-nio-shares-with-price-target-hike/chsHCIGRdjA">JPMorgan upgraded Nio to ‘Overweight</a>’ from “Neutral” in August, raising its price target to $8 from $4.8. The bank’s equity research arm highlighted three upcoming events: the release of second-quarter results on Sept. 2, the formal launch of the ES8 at Nio Day on September 20, and the anticipated unveiling of the Onvo L80 SUV at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November.
