However, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/occ-drops-new-stablecoin-rules-crcl-coin-stocks-hold-gains-amid-hype/cZR6xwtRIbT">new rules</a> say such arrangements could be used to bypass the law’s intent.</p><p>“If you look in our proposal, which we released yesterday, we have hard-wired a number of things into our proposal that we believe would tend to reduce the probability of deposit flight,” Jonathan Gould, head of the OCC, said at a Senate Banking Committee hearing on Thursday. “If a deposit flight were to occur, I think we would notice it, meaning it wouldn’t occur under cover of darkness, where no one would see it and fail to react to it.”</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">One Stablecoin Per Issuer Under Review</h2><p>This would effectively limit each permitted payment stablecoin issuer to a single branded stablecoin. If adopted, the restriction would be paired with a streamlined approval process for issuers seeking regulatory authorization.</p><p>Such a change could have wide-ranging implications. For example, Paxos’ arrangement to issue&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/PYPL">PayPal Holdings’ (PYPL)</a> dollar-pegged stablecoin&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/paypal-usd">PayPal USD (PYUSD)</a>, which currently offers rewards of roughly 4% on customer balances.</p><p><a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/PYPL">PayPal’s stock</a> edged 0.5% in pre-market trade on Friday, following a dip of 3.75% in the previous session after the company&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/paypal-reportedly-not-in-talks-with-stripe-or-any-other-firm-for-takeover/cZTG0KkRIRR">denied</a> there were any ongoing talks of a sale to Stripe. <ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Coinbase, Binance and Kraken launched competing tokenized stock products on the same day, highlighting the intensifying competition in the on-chain equities segment of the crypto market.</li><li>Coinbase announced that it now offers more than 8,000 tokenized stocks through a partnership with Yahoo Finance and Binance introduced tokenized securities through Ondo Finance.</li><li>Kraken launched tokenized perpetual futures tied to major indexes, commodities and large-cap stocks.</li></ul><p>Coinbase (COIN), Binance (BNB), and Kraken threw down the gauntlet on Tuesday, launching rival tokenized stock trading products on the same day in a bid to capitalize on the next big crypto play.</p><p>The near-simultaneous launches by all three major crypto exchanges highlight how crypto-native players are moving to capture demand for blockchain-based versions of traditional financial assets.</p><p>Binance defined its offering of tokenized securities as digital securities designed to track the price performance of traditional stocks or ETFs on-chain. It said that the equity tokens provide traders with exposure to the price movements of the underlying asset, but they do not grant all shareholder rights, like the right to vote.</p><p>The move comes after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in January clarified that tokenized securities fall under existing federal laws regardless of being on-chain. Experts also&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bdo.com/insights/industries/fintech/trends-in-tokenization-reimagining-real-world-assets">believe</a> that the passage of the GENIUS Act in 2025 and the expected passage of the Clarity Act this year are likely to lead to a boom in the availability and adoption of tokenized assets.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">Coinbase Offers Over 8,000 Tokenized Stocks</h2><p>Coinbase&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/blog/coinbase-opens-stock-trading-to-everyone-in-the-us-partners-with-yahoo-finance-to-power-discovery">announced</a> that it has partnered with Yahoo Finance and now offers over 8,000 tokenized stocks on its platform, available to trade 24 hours a day, five days a week.&nbsp;</p><p><a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/COIN">COIN’s stock</a> rose more than 1% in overnight trade following a gain of 1.12% in regular hours as strength in the broader cryptocurrency market pushed crypto-linked equities higher on Tuesday night. The company said it is starting off with 10 perpetual contracts, which include derivatives tracking gold, the S&amp;P 500, and the Nasdaq 100 indexes.&nbsp;</p><p>The bundle also encompasses large-cap names like Nvidia (NVDA), Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG/GOOGL), Tesla (TSLA), Robinhood (HOOD), as well as Bitcoin (BTC) proxy Strategy (MSTR) and stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Group (CRCL).&nbsp;</p><p>These contracts will be available to trade 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Eligible non-U.S. clients will be able to access these tokenized assets with up to 20x leverage on the Kraken and Kraken Pro platforms.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">Hunt For New Revenue Streams</h2><p>The shift towards tokenized equities by crypto exchanges may not solely be driven by the positive regulatory environment. The move also comes as Bitcoin’s price trades nearly 50% below its all-time high of over $126,000 in October and multiple analysts have warned of falling trading volumes impacting overall revenue.&nbsp;</p><p>Coinbase&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/coinbase-stock-rises-despite-posting-surprise-q4-net-loss/cZRTzudR4r6">reported</a> a loss of $2.49 a share in the fourth quarter (Q4), while revenue was down almost 22% to $1.78 billion. Wall Street was expecting earnings of $1 a share on revenue of $1.8 billion. Coinbase, Binance, Kraken Roll Out Rival Tokenized Stock Products In The Battle For Retail Dollars

The move comes after the SEC in January clarified that tokenized securities fall under existing federal laws regardless of being on-chain.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Bloomberg Intelligence estimated that Coinbase’s stablecoin revenue could increase two to seven times if adoption accelerates and legislation remains favorable.</li><li>Stablecoin revenue accounted for approximately 19% of Coinbase’s total revenue in 2025, largely driven by its revenue-sharing agreement with Circle on USDC reserves.</li><li>Wall Street is concerned that if Washington restricts exchanges from offering stablecoin rewards, it could potentially impact Coinbase’s business model.</li><li>However, CEO Brian Armstrong has contented that a ban on stablecoin yields could actually be a more profitable move for the company.&nbsp;</li></ul><p>Coinbase (COIN) shares fell in overnight night on Monday despite Bloomberg Intelligence estimating that the company’s stablecoin revenue could surge sevenfold if adoption explodes and regulation doesn’t get in the way.&nbsp;</p><p><a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/COIN/">COIN’s stock</a> moved 1.88% lower in overnight trade after a drop of 6.48% in the regular session to around $160, down nearly 30% this year. The bulk of that revenue came from its 50% income sharing deal with Circle (CRCL) on USDC (USDC) reserves.&nbsp;</p><p>According to the&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-02-23/coinbase-stablecoin-revenue-poised-for-up-to-sevenfold-surge-bi-says">report</a>, that income could increase two to seven times once adoption accelerates under the GENIUS Act. However, negotiations over the market structure bill in Washington could bar crypto exchanges like Coinbase from offering rewards tied to stablecoins. If that were to happen, the its revenue-sharing agreement with Circle is likely to be impacted, the report said.</p><p>The ability to continue to pay stablecoin rewards is just one of several factors for Coinbase to reach seven-fold growth. “They would need favorable details of the eventual crypto bill,” wrote Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Paul Gulberg.&nbsp;</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">Wall Street Signals More Downside Risk</h2><p>However, not everyone&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/buy-coinbase-shorts-despite-selloff-monness-crespi-tells-investors/cZRM5hcR4z2">agrees</a> that regulation moves will turn out in Coinbase’s favour. According to Monness Crespi analyst Gus Gala, the probability assigned to the CLARITY Act passing "remains too high in certain corners." In a note to investors on Monday cited by TheFly, she added that clarity on the stablecoin loophole remaining open in the next draft of CLARITY Act "is far too optimistically priced in."</p><p>The drop in COIN’s stock came Gala told investors to short the shares, anticipating the stock price to fall further. Gala attributed Monday’s drop in Coinbase shares to President Donald Trump's tariff moves, continued exchange traded fund outflows (ETFs), and "signs of whales moving HODLs onto exchanges."&nbsp; The firm reiterated a ‘Sell’ rating on the stock with a $120 price target – a potential downside of 25% from Monday’s close.</p><p>On Friday, Baird analyst Robert Bamberger lowered the price target on Coinbase to $165 from $240 and kept a ‘Neutral’ rating on the shares.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">Coinbase CEO Sees Upside Even Without Stablecoin Rewards</h2><p>According to Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, the company could see more profit if it were prohibited from offering yield on stablecoins.</p><p>“It would actually make us more profitable because we would just continue to receive the economics from Circle,” Armstrong told investors in latest earnings call. “Today, we pass majority of that along to the customer. If we were prohibited from doing that, it would ironically would just make us more profitable."</p><p>The AI-driven selloff in the stock market added to pressure on COIN, with&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/bitcoin-price-drops-below-63-k-after-ibm-s-worst-day-in-25-years/cZRvmBAR4zX">weakness spreading</a> across digital assets. The overall cryptocurrency market fell 2.4% in the last 24 hours to $2.25 trillion.&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/coins/bitcoin">Bitcoin’s (BTC) price</a> tumbled 3.3% to under $63,000, leading losses among crypto majors. However, according to a report from Eleanor Terrett The White House took charge in the latest round of discussions around the crypto market structure bill needed to move the Act&nbsp;forward.</p><p>White House Crypto Council Executive Director Patrick Witt introduced a draft text that stated restrictions on stablecoin rewards would be “narrow in scope.”</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">Coinbase Earnings</h2><p>Coinbase’s revenue in Q4 tumbled 21% year-over-year to about $1.8 billion. Analysts on average expected Coinbase to post revenue of $1.83 billion in the quarter, according to data from Fiscal.ai.</p><p>The company swung to a net loss of $667 million compared with a $1.3 billion profit from the same period last year, due to falling token prices that led to a slump in trading activity across digital assets.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">Crypto Selloff</h2><p>Cryptocurrency, especially bitcoin, has been under the pump so far in 2026,&nbsp;pressuring stocks that are linked with cryptocurrency. Coinbase has been on the receiving end of the selloff.
