Nio, Zeekr, XPeng Clock Growth In July EV Deliveries, While Li Auto Takes A Hit: Retail Has Big Expectations From This Stock

Chinese EV makers Neta and Zeekr&nbsp;reportedly inflated vehicle sales figures to meet aggressive targets. Both companies arranged for vehicles to be insured before actual sales, allowing them to count deliveries early under Chinese registration rules, Reuters&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/china-ev-brands-zeekr-neta-inflated-car-sales-using-insurance-scheme-2025-07-20/">reported</a>, citing documents and interviews with dealers and buyers.Neta reportedly used this method to book at least 64,719 cars from January 2023 to March 2024, which is over half of its reported sales in that period. Zeekr applied the same tactic in late 2024 via its main dealer in Xiamen.The practice, known in China as selling "zero-mileage used cars," stems from intense competition and chronic overcapacity in the EV market. State media and regulators have since criticized the tactic, with China’s industry ministry reportedly planning a ban on&nbsp;the resale of newly registered cars within six months.The China Securities Journal&nbsp;recently reported that some Zeekr buyers&nbsp;found their cars were already insured prior to purchase,&nbsp;and were denied refunds. Zeekr said Sunday on Weibo&nbsp;that the cars were insured for showroom display and still qualified as new. It did not confirm whether they were&nbsp;included in the retail sales count.Neta reportedly began pre-insuring cars in late 2022 to qualify for expiring subsidies. Buyers said they weren’t informed&nbsp;that the traffic insurance had already started. Sales fell from 152,000 in 2022 to 87,948 in 2023, and just 1,215 in Q1 2025. Its parent, Zhejiang Hozon New Energy Automobile, entered bankruptcy proceedings last month.Zeekr’s December 2024 sales in Xiamen surged to 2,737, with most vehicles sold to companies linked to its local dealer, Xiamen C&amp;D. Only 271 vehicles were registered for license plates that month, according to city records.Dealers reportedly said many cars remained unsold in warehouses, with Neta pressuring them to continue the practice. Chinese EV Scandal? Zeekr, Neta Accused Of Gaming Sales With Pre-Insured Cars

Chinese regulators are now moving to crack down on the practice, known as “zero-mileage used cars”.

China-based EV maker ZEEKR Intelligent Technology Holding Limited (ZK) on Tuesday announced that it has entered into an agreement and plan of merger with its majority shareholder and Chinese automaker Geely Automobile Holdings Limited (GELYY).<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/ZK">ZK shares</a> were trading 0.11% lower in the pre-market session on Tuesday at the time of writing.As part of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/zeekr-group-enters-into-definitive-merger-agreement-for-acquisition-transaction-302505174.html">agreement</a>, Keystone Mergersub Limited, an indirect wholly-owned unit of Geely, will merge with Zeekr, with the EV maker becoming a wholly-owned unit of Geely.Zeekr shareholders will receive $26.87 in cash per Zeekr American Depositary Share (ADS) or 12.3 newly issued Geely Shares per Zeekr ADS, which will be delivered in the form of American depositary shares of Geely.The per-ADS cash consideration represents a 3.4% discount to Zeekr ADS’s closing price on the New York Stock Exchange on Monday.If all eligible Zeekr holders elect to receive cash consideration and the privatization is conducted entirely in cash, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2025/0715/2025071500630.pdf">total</a> cash consideration payable by Geely will be $2.4 billion. The cash merger consideration will be funded through Geely's internal resources, or if necessary, debt financing.As of Tuesday, Geely holds approximately 62.8% of the total issued and outstanding share capital of ZEEKR. Zeekr Enters $2.4B Deal With Chinese Carmaker Geely To Go Private

If completed, the merger will result in Zeekr becoming a privately held company wholly owned by Geely, and the Zeekr ADSs will no longer be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

NYSE-listed shares of EV maker ZEEKR Intelligent Technology Holding (ZK) jumped 11% on Wednesday morning after its parent and Chinese carmaker Geely proposed taking it private.In a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2025/0507/2025050700604.pdf">filing</a> with the Hong Kong stock exchange, Geely said that it has submitted a non-binding proposal to Zeekr, indicating its interest in taking the EV maker private by acquiring all issued and outstanding Zeekr shares and American Depositary Shares (ADSs).The company proposed to value Zeekr at $25.66 per ADS, which represents a premium of approximately 13.6% to the stock’s closing price on the NYSE on Tuesday.Geely holds approximately 65.7% of the total issued and outstanding share capital of ZEEKR as of May 7.If the proposed privatisation goes through, Zeekr would become a wholly owned subsidiary of the company and would be delisted from the NYSE, the company said.Geely believes the integration of Zeekr’s assets and resources will help enhance the competitiveness of its passenger vehicle business.“As ZEEKR is a global premium electric mobility technology brand targeting the high-end premium market, taking full equity control over ZEEKR is strategically significant for the Group,” it said.Zeekr went public in the U.S. in May 2024.
