He also cautioned that the impact will grow further over the next five years.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Recent Job Cuts</h2>Earlier this week, <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/amazon-reportedly-plans-more-job-cuts-in-thousands-next-week/cmUCfuXR4Xn">reports</a> emerged about Amazon planning to lay off about 14,000 people, adding to the 14,000 from October last year. The e-commerce company reportedly said in an internal letter that the latest generation of AI has been the most transformative technology and is enabling companies to innovate much faster.However, CEO Jassy had told analysts during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that the reductions were not financially-driven or even AI-driven.Meanwhile, Citigroup is also continuing its <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/citi-will-cut-more-jobs-in-2026-as-part-of-ceo-reorganization-plan/cmyRW69R4gC">job cuts</a> in 2026, as part of its CEO’s reorganization efforts, which the company said aligns with current business needs, and also reflects the “efficiencies we have gained through technology and progress against our transformation work,” the company said.&nbsp;Meanwhile, U.S. equities closed higher on Friday. The <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF</a> (SPY), which tracks the S&amp;P 500 index, closed up around 0.04%, while the <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/AQQQ">Invesco QQQ Trust ETF</a> (QQQ) ended the day 0.32% higher. This comes at a time when some AI startups, such as OpenAI, are working to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI), while companies like Tesla are developing humanoid robots.“When people in the AI space predict that AGI or fully humanoid robots will come soon and then those deadlines are missed, it creates the impression that these things will never happen,” Gates said, warning against becoming complacent about the risks posed by AI.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Risk Of Bioterrorism</h2>Gates cautioned that an even greater risk than a pandemic today is the use of AI by bad actors to design a bioterrorism weapon.He recalled his 2015&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Af6b_wyiwI">TED Talk</a>, in which he warned that the world was not prepared to handle a pandemic.Five years later, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, resulting in the death of more than seven million people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Disruption Of The Job Market</h2>The Microsoft co-founder added that AI has gotten good enough that it is already causing disruption in areas like software development. While other areas, like warehousing or phone support, are not as affected, he warned that once the AIs become more capable, the job disruption will be more immediate.“AI capabilities will allow us to make far more goods and services with less labor. In a mathematical sense, we should be able to allocate these new capabilities in ways that benefit everyone,” he said.He cautioned that the impact of AI on the job market will only grow over the next five years.“Both are real risks that we need to do a better job managing. We’ll need to be deliberate about how this technology is developed, governed, and deployed,” Gates said.Meanwhile, U.S. equities gained in Wednesday’s opening trade. (WDAY) shares slipped over 5% in Wednesday’s early premarket session as investors digested the company’s quarterly results that showed top-line growth roughly in line with estimates and subscription revenue growth that is forecast to slow down.Workday is a cloud-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) company that provides an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered platform for human resource and financial management.Year-to-date,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/WDAY">Workday stock</a> has lost nearly 10%.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Workday’s Q3 Earnings Snapshot</h2>Pleasanton, California-based Workday reported adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.32 for the third quarter of the fiscal year 2026, and revenue of $2.432 billion, up 12.6% year over year (YoY). The bottom-line result notably exceeded the Fiscal.ai-compiled consensus of $2.17, while the top line was just ahead of the $2.42 billion consensus.&nbsp;The faster pace of repurchases during the quarter also boosted the EPS.&nbsp;Subscription revenue climbed 14.6% to $2.24 billion. The 12-month subscription revenue backlog climbed 17.6% YoY to $8.21 billion, accelerating from the 16.4% increase in the second quarter.CEO Carl Eschenbach said, “Workday delivered another solid quarter, fueled by the strength and diversity of our business and the momentum we're seeing across our AI portfolio.”&nbsp;The company said the quarterly performance was driven by “continued progress across several key growth initiatives.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Workday’s Outlook</h2>CFO Zane Rowe said, “We now expect fiscal 2026 subscription revenue of $8.828 billion, growth of 14%, and non-GAAP operating margin of approximately 29%."The company guided fourth-quarter subscription revenue to $2.355 billion, up 15.5%, and an adjusted operating margin of at least 28.5%.
