Fed’s Jeff Schmid Says Apex Bank Does Not Have Room To Be ‘Complacent’ About Inflation: Report

According to a Bloomberg report, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City chief Jeff Schmid said on Tuesday that inflation in the U.S. has been above the Fed’s target for almost five years.

ARK’s Cathie Wood Rebuts Citrini AI Thought Piece, Predicts Opportunities After Near-Term Disruptions

In a post on X on Tuesday, CEO of ARK Invest Cathie Wood said the firm is forecasting that AI will lead to a productivity boom, contribute to growth, and lower inflation. 

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Burry, who has warned about an AI bubble in the past, shared the thought experiment on an X post on Monday.</li><li>The Substack post from Citrini Research and Alap Shah, Co-Founder and CEO at Littlebird, outlined potential ways in which agentic AI could negatively impact the economy over the next two years.</li><li>Dated as a post from June 2028, the experiment proposed that the unemployment rate would rise to 10.2% and the S&amp;P 500 would fall 38% from its Oct. 2026 highs.</li></ul>“The Big Short” investor Michael Burry, best known for spotting and betting against the subprime mortgage crisis, shared a post from Citrini Research about a thought experiment detailing how artificial intelligence agents would impact the world economy in the future.Sharing the research on an X <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/michaeljburry/status/2025957871599374737">post</a> on Monday, Burry said, “And you think I’m bearish.”<figure class="image"><img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Screenshot_2026_02_23_at_9_40_11_PM_png_74ded78590.webp" alt="Screenshot 2026-02-23 at 9.40.11 PM.png" width="1184" height="915"></figure>&nbsp;The Substack post from Citrini Research, titled The 2028 Global Intelligence Crisis, posed an interesting experiment into the future, outlining potential ways in which agentic AI could negatively impact the economy over the next two years, specifically employment and the stock market.“What if our AI bullishness continues to be right...and what if that’s actually bearish?” the report noted.<h2 class="st-heading-2">The Big Predictions</h2>The thought experiment, co-authored by Citrini Research and Alap Shah, Co-Founder and CEO at Littlebird as well as Managing Partner at Lotus Technology Management, is dated June 2028, when the experiment proposed that unemployment rate had risen to 10.2% and the S&amp;P 500 had fallen 38% from its Oct. 2026 highs.The experiment went on to suggest that while initial human layoffs and AI-led replacement led to margin expansion, higher earnings, and a boost in stocks, even as headline numbers were strong, real wage growth collapsed and white-collar workers lost jobs to machines, eventually leading to “cracks” in the consumer economy.The report suggested that agentic AI could trigger a structural downturn, starting with a collapse in white-collar hiring, eventually leading to reduced consumption, pushing yields lower, and culminating in a systemic shock of “a negative feedback loop with no natural brake” that would result in falling markets, a recession in 2027, and eventual collapse of private credit and the housing market.Citrini said that “the human intelligence displacement spiral” would result in the AI economy continuing to improve while the broader economy would deteriorate.The experiment comes at a time when stock markets are nearing all-time highs and the AI boom is accelerating. Citrini noted that the negative feedback loops have not yet begun, while also adding that some of the scenarios outlined in their experiment would not materialize.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Burry’s Stance</h2>Michael Burry has warned about an AI bubble on multiple occasions, flagging parallels to the 2000 dot-com buildout, and cautioning about overstated asset lives, slowing cloud growth, and widening capex gaps.Burry has also said that massive data-center spending is draining cash flow and forcing big tech firms to rely on debt or creative accounting to protect reported earnings.Meanwhile, U.S. equities declined on Monday. ‘The Big Short’ Investor shared a post from Citrini Research about a thought experiment detailing how AI agents would impact the world economy in the future.

As a result, the expenditure does not weigh down on the bottom line of the companies all at once.“Most of the companies shown packaged their FY’26 capex forecasts with FY’26 profit forecasts so investors could see the current year impact on profits,” Black said.For his third point, Black said eventually tech CEOs would see that the capex splurge would not pay off as the return on investment would fall short over everyone’s bet on the same play.“There will be an awakening by tech CEOs that much of this capex splurge won’t pay off — i.e., ROI will fall short of the cost of capital — as everyone is betting on the same AI payoff, and not everyone will win,” he said.“Once this realization occurs future capex plans will be scaled back,” Black added.Black also said that Google parent Alphabet Inc. (GOOG, GOOGL) and Meta Platforms Inc. (META) both looked compelling at their current price-to-earnings ratio.“$GOOG at a 2026 P/E of 28x vs 20% long-term eps growth (1.4x PEG) and $META at a 2026 P/E of 22x vs +18% EPS growth (1.2x PEG) both look compelling here,” he said.<h2 class="st-heading-2">AI Capex Spending</h2>In its latest earnings, Amazon.com (AMZN) said it will allocate $200 billion to capital expenditure in 2026. Meanwhile, Alphabet guided its capex for 2026 between $175 billion and $185 billion, well above street expectations of $120 billion.Meta increased its capex for 2026, quoting a range of $115 billion to $135 billion, up considerably from $72.22 billion spent in 2025.While the larger market has expressed concerns over the massive expenditure, CEO of Nvidia Corp. The Labor Department, which houses the BLS, was funded only through Jan. 30.While the Senate has voted to extend funding, the measure must still pass the House, which is scheduled to return on Monday.To avoid a prolonged shutdown, the Senate separated DHS funding from other agencies and approved a two-week stopgap after reaching a deal with the White House to negotiate Democratic demands. President Donald Trump’s administration agreed to temporarily fund DHS at current levels.The BLS, still recovering from last year’s record shutdown, also produces CPI and other key economic data that may be affected.Meanwhile, U.S. equities rose in Monday’s mid-day trade.
