Shares of Allbirds Inc. (BIRD) surged nearly 650% on Wednesday, after the company said it’s making a major pivot toward artificial intelligence after securing a $50 million convertible financing facility to build AI compute infrastructure.
BIRD stock recorded its biggest-ever intraday gains.
Allbirds signed a definitive agreement with an institutional investor for a $50 million convertible financing facility, expected to close in the second quarter (Q2) of 2026. The funding will support the company’s shift toward AI compute infrastructure, with a long-term goal of becoming a fully integrated GPU-as-a-Service and AI-native cloud solutions provider.
As part of this transition, the company plans to rebrand itself as NewBird AI.
The move comes alongside a deal to sell its footwear brand and assets to American Exchange Group, though the Allbirds brand and legacy will continue under their ownership, the company said.
Allbirds said the conversion of the financing facility will require shareholder approval at a special meeting expected on May 18, 2026. The company also needs shareholder approval for its asset sale. If approved, Allbirds plans to issue a special dividend in the third quarter (Q3) of 2026.
NewBird AI plans to use initial funding to buy high-performance GPUs and provide dedicated AI computing capacity to customers. The company aims to build a GPU-as-a-Service and AI cloud platform.
This strategy targets a fast-growing market where demand for AI compute is outpacing supply, driven by rising usage, limited capacity, and long hardware lead times. NewBird AI aims to fill this gap by offering long-term access to high-performance computing.
The struggling footwear company has posted a loss in each of its last 18 quarters, according to Koyfin data.
Retail sentiment flipped to ‘extremely bullish’ from ‘neutral’ a day earlier, amid ‘extremely high’ message volumes.
One user said the company is “staying ahead of the AI curve.”
Another user sees resistance at $20. The stock is currently trading at $18.5.
Year-to-date, the stock has gained 370%.
