Microsoft 365 Services Recover After Outage — What Caused The Issue?

Service-tracking website Downdetector indicated a massive spike in reports of Microsoft 365 issues on Wednesday.

Several services of Microsoft (MSFT) 365, including Teams and Outlook, were down on Wednesday, according to the service-tracking website Downdetector.

As of 12:05 PM EST, Downdetector showed 1,351 users reported issues while using Microsoft services. 36% of those users reported issues with Sharepoint, 36% reported Server Connection issues, and another 28% reported issues with Exchange.

Company’s Response

Microsoft said in a post on X that the company is investigating the issue affecting Microsoft 365 services.

Later, the company said that its investigation indicates a possible third-party networking issue may be affecting access to its services, including Teams and Outlook, for some users.

At the time of writing, outage reports on Downdetector across locations in the U.S. declined. “Access issues for Microsoft 365 services, including Teams and Outlook, have been resolved. We’ve determined that the Microsoft service environment remained healthy, and that the incident was related to a third-party network issue,” the company said.

Earlier, on Jan. 16, the company investigated another issue with Microsoft Copilot in the North America region. The company resolved the issue shortly after, confirming in an X post that an internal test determined the original problem was due to a configuration change to the service.

Other Recent Outages

Earlier on Wednesday, several Yahoo services, including its search engine, Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Mail, and AOL, were down. The company acknowledged the outage on X and fixed the issue impacting access to its products.

Recently, many other internet services, including social media platform X and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, faced outages.

What Are Stocktwits Users Saying?

On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around MSFT shares slipped to ‘bullish’ from ‘extremely bullish’ territory amid ‘high’ message volumes.

One user noted the outage, calling it ‘endless bad news’ for the company.
