Oracle (ORCL) shares were in focus on Tuesday after the company announced an agreement with AstraZeneca (AZN) to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) and real-world data could help clinicians identify eligible patients for clinical trials, improve trial efficiency and bring relevant research insights into everyday care.
“Some of the most important opportunities for AI are in healthcare, where better use of data can help turn scientific innovation into better outcomes for patients,” Oracle CEO Mike Sicilia said.
ORCL shares traded 0.51% higher in premarket trading, while AZN shares rose 1.76%, as of the time of writing on Tuesday.

The non-binding agreement is expected to combine AstraZeneca’s scientific and therapeutic expertise with Oracle’s health data, cloud, AI, analytics and clinical workflow capabilities.
The companies plan to explore selected use cases involving modern applications and AI to help care teams identify eligible patients earlier and more easily, with the aim of expanding access to clinical trials and addressing patient recruitment, which the companies describe as one of the largest obstacles in clinical trials.
Initial disease areas under consideration could include oncology; cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases, respiratory and immunology, and rare diseases.

Anne-Claire Gerbaldi, AstraZeneca’s chief digital, data and AI officer, said the companies aim to connect learnings across science, clinical trials and everyday care to generate insights that strengthen research, accelerate innovation and enhance patient outcomes. She also cited the potential to support smarter clinical trials, strengthen safety monitoring and help patients receive diagnoses sooner.
Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager of Oracle Health and Life Sciences, said Oracle would provide secure data, cloud, AI and clinical workflow capabilities. She said the collaboration could help health systems broaden access to clinical trials and generate evidence to support clinical decisions, under the governance of the health systems delivering care.
