Shares of T1 Energy Inc. (TE) slipped about 2% lower in the premarket session on Thursday following a stellar month-long rally that saw the stock rise 128% in May, putting it on track for its best monthly gains on record.
The energy company gained retail attention after hedge fund Situational Awareness LP revealed a new investment in AI infrastructure firm Nebius Group (NBIS), reinforcing the fund’s broader AI infrastructure bets.
Earlier this month, the hedge fund run by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner disclosed a $44 million stake in T1 Energy. TE stock rallied following the investment.
At the time of writing, the company’s shares have risen 128% in May, putting it on track for its best monthly performance on record.
On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around TE shares was in the ‘extremely bullish’ territory amid ‘extremely high’ message volumes.
One user noted that the “Leopold effect is honestly insane right now,” adding that “When one investor can reframe an entire sector conversation, you know sentiment is running hot.”
Another user said that the company was positioned to benefit from macroeconomic tailwinds around energy, infrastructure, and industrial demand. “If margins expand alongside revenue growth and the market starts pricing it as a strategic player instead of a laggard, you get multiple expansion + earnings growth at the same time. That’s the exact formula for 5–10x moves in small/mid caps during strong economic cycles.....,” the user said.
Another bullish user said, “$TE congrats to all long , very happy with holding TE since 6/7$. Will not sell for now is still a gem.”
The stock has rallied a whopping 828% in the last 12 months.
On Wednesday, the hedge fund disclosed that it held a 5.6% stake in Nebius and owned 12.41 million Class A shares of the neocloud company, valued at $2.6 billion.
On May 18, Situational Awareness revealed it had bought 10 million shares of T1 Energy, bringing its total stake in the company to 3.6%. The hedge fund also has stakes in other AI-related companies, including Bloom Energy, SanDisk, CoreWeave, and IREN.
