Hartford Bakery has recalled its Lewis Bake Shop bread in the United States, currently being sold by retailers, including Walmart (WMT) and Kroger (KR), according to a regulatory notice.
Some six lots of Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf have been recalled as they may contain undeclared hazelnuts, which could cause severe reactions to consumers with nut allergies, according to the company's statement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's site.
While the packaging of the recalled lots states "May Contain Tree Nuts," it does not state that it "Contains Hazelnuts." An investigation revealed an error in the change of packaging for a hazelnut-containing bread to the implicated white bread product.
The company said these lots were distributed in 12 states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama, and Mississippi.
While there have been no significant reports of injury or illness to date, Hartford Bakery said it is aware of one customer who experienced digestive discomfort after consumption. The company also received consumer complaints from those who saw the nuts before consuming the product.
Packaged food recalls have been on the rise of late.
Earlier this month, Mondelez (MDLZ) recalled several batches of its Ritz crackers that contained peanut butter varieties without adequate labeling, and Kraft Heinz (KHC) pulled its Oscar Mayer turkey bacon on potential contamination concerns.
