Copper miner stocks will be in focus on Wednesday after Goldman Sachs lowered the global production forecast of the red metal due to the shutdown of Freeport-McMoRan’s giant Grasberg mine in Indonesia.U.S. copper futures rose over 1% in early trading, as the investment bank’s analysts projected that the lost output at the second-biggest copper mine will wipe out 525,000 metric tons of supply, according to a Reuters News <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/goldman-sachs-downgrades-copper-supply-forecast-after-grasberg-mine-disruption-2025-09-25/">report</a>. The firm also lowered its global supply for the second half of 2025 by 160,000 tons and its 2026 forecast by 200,000 tons.The deficit could boost copper prices and aid miners such as Teck Resources, BHP Group and Southern Copper.The firm also projected a deficit of 55,500 tons in the copper supply chain, based on a prediction of a production surplus of 105,000 tons. However, in 2026, copper supplies are expected to exceed demand.Freeport on Wednesday revealed that at least two workers died in a mud flow incident at the mine on Sept. 8, and five workers are missing. The company has shut down operations at the project and noted that, for the third quarter of 2025, its consolidated sales are expected to be approximately 4% lower for copper and approximately 6% lower for gold than it estimated in July.Goldman said Freeport believes that fourth-quarter output from the mine will be very low, as the unaffected areas of the mine could restart in the middle of the quarter. The firm reportedly stated that the unaffected portion accounts for approximately 30%-40% of Grasberg's annual production capacity. BHP Group (BHP) is reportedly set to suspend operations and reduce staff at a Queensland coking coal mine, as it grapples with low prices and high government royalties.According to a Reuters News report, citing the firm, Saraji South, part of the Saraji Mine Complex that BHP runs with a unit of Mitsubishi, will be placed into care and maintenance from November 2025. The miner had already sold two metallurgical coal assets in 2023 for at least $3.2 billion in a move away from coal toward energy transition metals.The coking royalties were imposed in 2022 when coal prices had soared following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, now coking coal prices have slipped back to around $190 per ton, compared to above $600 per ton in 2022.  BHP To Cut Jobs, Suspend Operations At Queensland Coal Mine On High Tax Burden

U.S. shares of Teck Resources (TECK) gained over 8% in premarket trading after Anglo American agreed to buy the Canadian miner in one of the largest deals in mining history.According to the terms of the deal, Anglo American shareholders will own 62.4% of the combined company, while Teck holders will hold 37.6%. Each Teck shareholder will receive 1.3301 shares of Anglo American for every share of the Canadian mining firm, representing a 17% premium to Teck’s closing share price on Monday.However, London-listed Anglo American will also pay its investors $4.5 billion in special dividends before the completion of the deal, expected within the next 12 to 18 months. Anglo American was valued at approximately $36 billion, while Teck’s market capitalization was around $17 billion, based on their last closing prices.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/TECK">Teck stock</a> was headed to open at its highest since July. The megadeal would make Anglo American less vulnerable to takeovers.The combined company will be known as Anglo Teck Group and will be headquartered in Canada. However, its primary listing will remain in London. Anglo American’s CEO Duncan Wanblad will lead the combined entity, while Teck’s Jonathan Price will serve as deputy CEO.Teck had produced 446,000 tonnes of copper in 2024, and if the deal goes through, the combined company’s output of the red metal will be well over 1 million tonnes. The Canadian miner is involved in four mining projects, including the giant Quebrada Blanca project in Chile, which is located close to Anglo American’s Collahuasi mine. The two miners expect recurring annual benefits of $800 million following the deal’s close.Teck, which the founding Keevil family controls, has drawn acquisition interest ever since it sold its coal assets.
