The carmaker blamed production disruptions from a fire at a Novelis aluminum supplier, higher tariff costs, and persistent pricing pressure in EVs. However, quarterly sales rose to $45.9 billion, beating estimates.Ford guided to full-year 2026 adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of $8 billion to $10 billion, in line with Wall Street forecasts and higher than the $6.8 billion generated last year. Most of that profit is expected to come from its commercial vehicle business, with EBIT projected at $6.5 billion to $7.5 billion. Gas and hybrid models are expected to contribute another $4 billion to $4.5 billion.The company also said its Model e unit is likely to post losses of $4 billion to $4.5 billion next year. It plans to increase capital spending to $9.5 billion to $10.5 billion and targets free cash flow of $5 billion to $6 billion.The quarter included $15.5 billion in special charges tied largely to Ford’s EV strategy reset, as demand cooled and policy support weakened. The company said another $7 billion in charges is expected across 2026 and 2027.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Ford Faces Growing Competition From China</h2>Meanwhile, Ford is facing increasing competition from Chinese automakers globally. China’s BYD overtook Ford in global vehicle sales for the first time last year as Ford’s wholesales fell nearly 2% in 2025 to just under 4.4 million vehicles, while BYD reported about 4.6 million.&nbsp;<img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/koyfin_20260211_124624827_png_06a912dca4.webp" alt="koyfin_20260211_124624827.png">Ford gained ground in the U.S., but lost share in Europe and especially China, where domestic players such as BYD, Xiaomi, and Geely are winning customers with lower-priced, tech-heavy EVs. BYD’s exports reached 1.05 million vehicles last year and are set to climb further, intensifying pressure on legacy automakers like Ford, Toyota, and General Motors.In a bid to tackle competition in China, Ford is&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.wsj.com/business/autos/https-www-wsj-com-business-autos-china-geely-auto-us-market-6d2d67ca-3808e678">reportedly</a> weighing a potential partnership with BYD to source batteries for some of Ford’s hybrid vehicles. Lu Tian, who oversees sales for the Dynasty lineup, posted the first image on Weibo and described it as the brand’s first B-class pure electric SUV. Details remain limited, but the model entered China’s industry regulator catalog last month, a typical step just ahead of a launch, according to a&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2026/02/04/byd-teases-song-ultra-ev/">report</a> by CnEVPost.Dimension-wise, it is slightly larger than the Song L EV and brings more muscle. The Song Ultra EV uses a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive setup with up to 270 kW of power and a top speed of 210 km/h. BYD also plans to offer optional LiDAR, alongside its “God’s Eye B” driver-assistance system with Urban Navigation on Autopilot.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Song Lineup Remains a Core Sales Driver for BYD</h2>The Song series is still one of BYD’s biggest sellers, making up about 17% of group sales in 2025, or roughly 788,000 vehicles. Even so, momentum has cooled toward year-end, with December sales down 56% from a year earlier. Updating a core model like the Song is one way BYD is trying to steady volumes at home.Beyond China, BYD has been accelerating its global expansion. <ul class="summary-bullets"><li>January sales data pressured Chinese EV stocks across the board.</li><li>Nio’s deliveries jumped year-on-year but fell sharply from December.</li><li>The third-generation ES8 SUV delivered 17,646 units during the month, accounting for nearly 65% of total deliveries.&nbsp;</li></ul>Shares of Nio slid nearly 6% in Hong Kong trading on Monday,&nbsp;trading&nbsp;in line with a broad sell-off&nbsp;witnessed across Chinese electric vehicle stocks, even after the company posted a sharp jump in January deliveries.Other Chinese EV makers, including XPeng dropped nearly 9%, Li Auto fell around 4%, and BYD slid roughly 8% as investors digested fresh sales data from across the sector.<h2 class="st-heading-2">China EV Opens The Year On A Soft Note</h2>The plunge comes after January delivery numbers suggested a bumpy start to 2023 for much of China’s EV sector.BYD, China’s biggest new energy vehicle producer, sold 210,051 cars in January, down 30.1% annually. XPeng made 20,011 deliveries, down 34.1% on an annual basis and plunging 46.7% from December.Meanwhile, Li Auto made 27,668 deliveries, marking its eighth straight year-on-year drop, while sales also slumped 37.5% from the previous month.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Nio’s Delivery Growth Fails To Lift Stock</h2>Nio’s delivery volume against that backdrop still stood out, at least when compared with the prior year. The firm said it delivered 27,182 vehicles in January 2026, up 96.1% from a year earlier. However, deliveries declined 43.5% from December, which weighed on investor sentiment.Of those deliveries, 20,894 were Nio-branded vehicles, 3,481 were from its family-oriented sub-brand Onvo, while 2,807 were from its small EV brand Firefly. Cumulative sales rose to 1.02 million as of the end of January, surpassing the one-million-vehicle milestone.<h2 class="st-heading-2">ES8 Emerges As The Standout</h2>Much of Nio’s January performance rested on a single model. The third-generation ES8 SUV delivered 17,646 units during the month, accounting for nearly 65% of total deliveries. This is a dramatic increase from the 446 units delivered in January last year, reflecting the rapid ramp-up following the model’s launch at Nio Day in September 2025.Even so, ES8 deliveries were down about 21% from December’s record 22,258 units, when the model became China’s best-selling large SUV, according to the company. Nio also said it recently delivered its 60,000th third-generation ES8, just two weeks after reaching the 50,000-unit milestone.Deliveries at Onvo fell more than 61% from December, while Firefly deliveries dropped over 60% month-on-month.
