Shares of BYD fell 2.5% in Hong Kong on Friday after China’s market regulator said the automaker will recall more than 115,000 vehicles, its largest recall to date, over design flaws and battery-related safety risks.The news is likely to weigh on&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/BYDDF">BYD’s U.S.-listed stock</a>, which has already slipped about 0.4% so far this week.Regulator Flags Safety Issues&nbsp;According to the State Administration for Market Regulation, BYD has filed plans to recall 44,535 Tang series vehicles produced between March 2015 and July 2017, citing component design defects that could cause abnormal function, Reuters&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/climate-energy/byd-makes-largest-recall-over-115000-cars-due-design-battery-issues-2025-10-17/">reported</a>.The company will also recall 71,248 Yuan Pro electric vehicles manufactured between February 2021 and August 2022, due to manufacturing problems linked to battery installation that could pose safety risks.In January, BYD recalled about 6,800 Fangchengbao Bao 5 plug-in hybrid SUVs over potential fire hazards. The company also pulled back nearly 97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs in September 2024 due to steering control unit issues that raised fire concerns.Delivery Growth Slows&nbsp;The recall follows a&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/byd-reports-5.5-percent-sales-decline-in-september/chCYJzjR3aH">weaker sales report</a> earlier this month, when BYD said it delivered 396,270 new energy vehicles in September, down 5.5% from a year earlier.That total included 393,060 passenger vehicles, 3,210 commercial vehicles, and 71,256 exports. Battery electric models accounted for 205,050 units, while plug-in hybrids contributed 188,010 units.Across the third quarter, BYD sold over 1.11 million vehicles, with 582,522 battery electric cars among them. BYD Stock Dips In China After Largest Recall Yet Over Battery Risks, Design Flaws

BYD tightened its hold on China’s electric vehicle market in September, outpacing Tesla as local automakers pulled further ahead.The Warren Buffett–backed company sold about 347,000 new energy vehicles during the month, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), keeping its spot at the top of the rankings even with a slight dip from last year’s levels, CnEVPost&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/10/15/automakers-share-china-nev-market-sept-2025/">reported</a>.BYD’s sales were down 10.2% from last September but up 12% from August, giving it a 26.7% market share, well ahead of every other automaker in the country.&nbsp;Tesla, meanwhile, ranked fifth with 71,525 vehicles sold, a 0.9% drop from a year earlier but a 25% rebound from July. Its 5.5% share edged higher from August but remained below levels seen last year.Close behind BYD, Geely Auto held on to second place with 150,570 sales in September, a sharp 68% increase from a year earlier. Xiaomi EV stayed in the top 10 after selling 41,948 units, marking its second month on the list.From January to September, BYD’s dominance has been even more pronounced. The company has sold over 2.54 million NEVs so far this year, commanding nearly 29% of the market. BYD is preparing to bring its Shark hybrid pickup truck to the Chinese market after launching it across several global regions.&nbsp;BYD’s general manager of brand and public relations, Li Yunfei, confirmed on Weibo that the domestic launch is “in the planning stages” and will happen “sooner or later.” Li, currently in Mexico, shared images of the Shark displayed in a local showroom, according to a&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/10/09/byd-to-launch-shark-pickup-in-china/">report</a> by CnEVPost.The model first debuted in Mexico on May 14, 2024, marking a rare instance where BYD unveiled a new vehicle abroad before releasing it in China.The Shark, BYD’s first-ever pickup model, was introduced overseas earlier in 2024, just months after Tesla began deliveries of its fully electric Cybertruck in the U.S. The decision to prioritize international markets reflects China’s restrictive urban policies toward pickup trucks, which have historically limited the category's growth.&nbsp;According to the China Passenger Car Association, pickup sales in China rose 7% year-on-year to 369,000 units between January and August 2025, while new energy pickup sales soared 536% to 49,000 units. For comparison, overall new energy vehicle retail sales reached 8.8 million units during the same period, representing a 23.4% increase.The Shark is derived from BYD's DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) platform, a plug-in hybrid powertrain featuring two electric motors with a combined system output of over 430 horsepower. BYD Reports 5.5% Sales Decline In September

In the three months through the end of September, BYD sold over 1.1 million vehicles, including both battery electric and plug-in hybrids.

Ford Motor Co. (F) CEO Jim Farley reportedly stated on Wednesday that buyers in the U.S. prefer a $30,000 electric vehicle over utility vehicles, which cost $75,000 but offer a larger battery.In an interview&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ford-ceo-says-customers-are-not-interested-in-75000-evs-110019792.html">with</a> Yahoo Finance, Farley added that Ford does not want to live under the shadow of Tesla Inc. (TSLA), after having played the “No. 2” role to the latter for three years.“We've learned ... people are not willing to pay [a] $30,000 premium for that big battery on a [$50,000], $60,000 utility. But they're willing to buy a $30,000 EV if they save $2,000 a year compared to gas costs,” said Farley in the interview.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/F">Ford’s shares</a> were down 0.05% in Wednesday’s premarket trade.
