(TSLA) slipped 2% in premarket trading on Tuesday as CEO Elon Musk prepares to join U.S. President Donald Trump’s Beijing trip, while investors closely watch whether China could finally approve Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software after months of delays.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/TSLA">TSLA stock</a> is ripping above its 200-day moving average after jumping nearly 4% to end at $445 on Monday.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Musk Joins Trump’s High-Stakes China Trip</h2>Musk is expected to join a delegation of top U.S. executives accompanying Trump to Beijing this week, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon and Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser, according to a Bloomberg&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-05-11/musk-cook-set-to-join-trump-for-xi-summit-white-house-says">report</a>.&nbsp;Trump is expected to use the trip, scheduled between May 13 and May 15, to pursue major trade and business agreements with China spanning tech, aerospace, semiconductors, finance and supply chains.&nbsp;For Tesla investors, the biggest focus remains the delayed FSD approval in China. Musk previously said that Chinese regulators indicated supervised FSD approval could arrive around February or March. However, the timeline passed without authorization, with expectations now shifting toward a possible third-quarter rollout.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Tesla Builds China FSD Infrastructure Push</h2>Tesla has spent years laying the groundwork for broader FSD deployment inside China. The company established a Shanghai data center to localize vehicle data storage, signed a mapping partnership with Baidu and launched a local AI training center aimed at adapting Tesla’s software to Chinese roads and driving behavior.Tesla currently charges roughly 62,000 yuan ($9,100) for FSD in China, though the software remains heavily restricted pending broader approval. Chinese regulators have also tightened oversight around autonomous-driving terminology, pushing Tesla to rebrand certain FSD features locally as “Intelligent Assisted Driving.” Musk recently said that Tesla’s biggest China limitation was based more on FSD approvals and production constraints than demand itself. “Limiting factor is production output in Shanghai,” Musk said last month.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Tesla Loses China EV Market Share</h2>Tesla’s China retail business has weakened recently, even as exports out of Shanghai remain strong. The company sold 25,956 vehicles in China in April, down nearly 10% from a year earlier and below March levels. Tesla’s share of China’s total new-energy vehicle market slipped to 3%, its weakest level since November 2025, while its battery-electric vehicle share fell to 4%.Competition from BYD, Xiaomi and Huawei has intensified as Chinese automakers aggressively bundle advanced driver-assistance systems into lower-cost vehicles without separate software fees. Total wholesale deliveries from China reached nearly 79,500 vehicles.Nearly two-thirds of Shanghai’s April production was exported, helping offset softer local demand. Shanghai is Tesla’s largest global manufacturing hub and a crucial export base serving Europe and other international markets. TSLA Stock Slips Premarket: Musk Joins Trump’s China Trip As FSD Delays Threaten Tesla’s Biggest Factory 

Tesla’s China FSD rollout remains delayed after Musk earlier suggested approval could arrive in February or March, with expectations now shifting toward Q3.

(TSLA) slipped 1% in premarket trading on Monday as the EV maker faced fresh Cybertruck and software recalls, while its China retail sales and market share continued losing ground to aggressive domestic rivals.&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/TSLA">TSLA stock</a> logged its second straight week of gains, surging 10% last week.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Cybertruck, Software Recalls Add Pressure</h2>The automaker recently&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2026/RCLRPT-26V255-9062.pdf">recalled</a> 173 Tesla Cybertruck vehicles from model years 2024 through 2026 because of concerns on wheel hub components. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, stress from rough roads or aggressive cornering can cause cracking in the rotor near the wheel stud. In more severe cases, the wheel stud could separate from the hub, potentially affecting steering control and increasing crash risk.Tesla said it will replace the affected brake rotors, hubs and lug nuts with upgraded components free of charge. Separately, the company also recalled more than 200,000 Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X and Tesla Model 3 vehicles because of a software issue that could temporarily disable the rearview camera display. Regulators said that the issue could reduce driver visibility while reversing, raising the likelihood of a collision.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Domestic Weakness Overshadowed By Export Boom</h2>Tesla sold 25,956 vehicles in China during April, down 10% from a year earlier and also lower than March levels, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association. The drop marked the company’s second straight month of annual retail-sales declines in the country, according to a&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2026/05/11/tesla-china-retail-sales-apr-2026/">report</a> by CnEVPost.&nbsp;The slowdown also chipped away at Tesla’s position in China’s competitive EV market. Tesla’s share of the country’s total new-energy vehicle (NEV) retail market fell to 3% in April, its weakest level since November 2025. In battery-electric vehicles specifically, Tesla’s market share slid to 4%.The weak retail numbers contrasted with Tesla’s exports out of Shanghai. The company shipped over 53,000 vehicles overseas in April, marking one of the strongest export months ever for the factory. Including exports, Tesla China’s wholesale deliveries hit nearly 79,500 vehicles for the month.While local competition continues intensifying inside China, Tesla’s Shanghai plant remains a major production and export base serving Europe and other international markets. BYD remains Tesla’s biggest rival in the region, while companies linked to Xiaomi and Huawei are also expanding rapidly with software-heavy vehicle platforms. Last month, Ford CEO Jim Farley called BYD the benchmark competitor in China from a manufacturing and cost perspective.However, Tesla CEO Elon Musk argued that Tesla’s&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/elon-musk-pushes-back-ford-ceo-byd-best-ev-rival-limiting-factor-china/cZB5z15RIyW">biggest limitation</a> in China was based more on Full Self-Driving (FSD) approvals and production constraints than demand itself. “This is before supervised FSD is approved in China,” Musk said. “Limiting factor is production output in Shanghai.”Chinese automakers have increasingly bundled advanced driver-assistance systems into lower-cost vehicles, often without charging extra software fees, creating additional pressure on Tesla’s premium-priced FSD strategy in the region.<h2 class="st-heading-2">FSD Rollout And Supply Chain Risks In Focus</h2>Tesla has continued laying groundwork for a broader supervised FSD rollout in China, though regulators have not yet granted full approval. Earlier this year, Tesla China Vice President Grace Tao said that the company established a local training center to better adapt the system to Chinese roads and driving behavior.Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions between Washington and Beijing have also influenced Tesla’s supply-chain strategy. Tesla Stock Slips Premarket: Cybertruck Recall And Brutal China Sales Slump Rattle Investors 

Tesla recalled 173 Cybertrucks due to wheel-hub concerns that could increase crash risk.

Electrified vehicle sales dived a steep 31% to 19,413 vehicles, while internal combustion engine vehicle sales fell 12% to 159,254 units.<h2 class="st-heading-2">F-Series Sales Dip</h2>The Ford F-series trucks continued to be the best-selling vehicle model in the U.S., though sales fell about 15% year-over-year to 62,048 units, likely owing to the impact of a fire at the facility of Ford’s aluminum supplier Novelis in the second half of 2025.A fire that broke out on Sept. 16, 2025, at Novelis’ aluminum rolling plant in Oswego, N.Y., severely disrupted Ford’s supply of automotive-grade aluminum sheet, triggering months-long production cuts on its best-selling F-Series trucks. The blaze destroyed the plant’s critical hot mill — with follow-on fires in November compounding the damage — knocking out roughly 40% of the U.S. auto industry’s aluminum supply and hitting Ford, Novelis’ largest customer, hardest.Last week, CFO Sherry House said F-Series sales “remain healthy as inventory recovers from the Novelis supply disruption,” with F-150 posting a 30-basis-point year-over-year retail share gain in March and momentum carrying into Q2. House added that the company is trying to ensure that high-demand trim levels are in ample supply. &nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">BYD Vs. Ford</h2>Last month, Ford CEO Jim Farley warned against allowing Chinese EVs into the U.S. in an interview published on Fox News.“We should not let them into our country because of the economic impact… Manufacturing is the heart and soul of our country, and for us to lose that to those exports would be devastating for our country. There is no way this is a fair fight,” he said. In a later podcast, he also applauded Chinese EV maker BYD as the “best in the business.”On Friday, BYD reported that it sold 321,123 new energy vehicles in April, including 135,098 exports. CEO Elon Musk has responded to Ford CEO Jim Farley's remarks about viewing Chinese automaker BYD as a more serious rival than Tesla, saying there was just one key hurdle standing in the American EV maker's way.Meanwhile, Tesla shares are on track for their first positive month of the year, lifted by easing fears of an escalating U.S.-Iran military conflict as diplomatic talks gained traction and fresh investor optimism builds around Musk's ambitions to build a massive in-house semiconductor fabrication plant for AI chips.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Musk Flags China Output Constraint&nbsp;</h2>Last week, Farley, in an&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.fastcompany.com/91528934/jim-farley-on-why-ford-is-doubling-down-on-affordable-evs">interview</a> with Fast Company, said: “If you’re an American and you want us to beat the Chinese in the car business, you’re all going to want to pay attention, not necessarily to Tesla. Nothing against Tesla — they’ve been doing great — but they really don’t have an updated vehicle.”"The best in the business for us, cost-wise and competition-wise, supply chain, manufacturing expertise, and the IP in the vehicle, was really BYD. And BYD became the highest-volume brand in China, not VW or the Western brands," he added.&nbsp;Responding to Farley’s remarks, Musk&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2046013308051009791">said on X</a>, “This is before supervised FSD&nbsp;[full self-driving]&nbsp;is approved in China. Limiting factor is production output in Shanghai.”Farley said Chinese automakers had forced U.S. manufacturers to boost innovation rather than rely on legacy advantages. “That is the gift that China gave us: to be fearful and respectful enough of their progress that we could not organically just phone it in,” Farley said. “We needed to do what Americans sometimes do great, which is use innovation to compete against the best in the world.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Tesla Signals Progress On China FSD Rollout</h2>Tesla has been laying the groundwork for a broader rollout of supervised FSD in China, though the company has not announced a confirmed launch timeline. In February, Tesla China Vice President Grace Tao said the company established a dedicated local training center to adapt the system to domestic driving conditions. “Once officially released, it will demonstrate a level of performance that is no less than, and may even surpass, that of local drivers,” Tao said.&nbsp;Musk previously said that FSD has received only partial regulatory approval in China so far, with full authorization potentially arriving this year.&nbsp;Over the weekend, Tesla expanded its unsupervised Robotaxi service to Dallas and Houston, adding two new Texas hubs to its growing driverless ride-hailing network. Tesla’s autonomy rollout is also gaining traction in Europe, where the Netherlands recently granted the company its first approval for FSD (Supervised).<h2 class="st-heading-2">China Rivals Step Up Pressure On TSLA</h2>Tesla’s Shanghai factory is the EV maker’s largest global export hub and a central pillar of its Asia manufacturing strategy, supporting both domestic Chinese demand and overseas shipments.The company faces rising competition from domestic automakers, including BYD, as well as tech-linked vehicle platforms from Xiaomi and Huawei.
