Earlier this week, Bloomberg&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-12-29/tesla-cybertruck-flop-proves-costly-for-south-korean-supplier">reported</a> that Tesla’s contract value with South Korean supplier L&amp;F Co. has been slashed by 99%.&nbsp;<img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/TSLA_Vs_XLY_Vs_SPY_png_f9bd0033f8.webp" alt="TSLA Vs XLY Vs SPY.png">Source: Koyfin<h2 class="st-heading-2">Maturing Automotive Business?</h2>Automotive deliveries growth hasn’t really picked up after the spurt seen in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. After peaking at 83% in the second quarter of 2023, year-over-year sales growth either slowed or turned negative. The third quarter of 2025 marked a recovery after two consecutive quarters of decline; however, the 7.4% growth rate remained well below the nearly 122% surge recorded in the second quarter of 2021, when Model Y sales soared following its 2020 launch.<img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Tesla_Delivery_Growth_Loses_Momentum_png_6657350bc1.webp" alt="Tesla_Delivery_Growth_Loses_Momentum.png">Source: Fiscal.aiTesla for the first time publicly&nbsp;shared the consensus delivery forecast for the fourth quarter, ahead&nbsp;of the formal release scheduled for Jan. 2. The company-compiled consensus analyst forecast for the quarter is 422,850. If the estimate proves accurate, the company is on track to report annual deliveries of 1.641 million, down 8.3% from 1.79 million in 2024. While the consensus view shared by Tesla shows that the company might return to growth in 2026, which, though, is likely to be anemic (6.7%), Deepwater Asset Management’s Gene Munster predicts a big miss. In his 2026 predictions, the fund manager said he expects 2026 sales to be flat to up 5% as opposed to Wall Street’s consensus forecast for 16% delivery growth.If the auto business continues to be weak, one of the worst hit could be Musk himself. His $1 trillion pay package, which the Delaware Supreme Court recently cleared, is predicated on the company’s market cap hitting $8.5 trillion, while also meeting the following operational performance:-achieving up to $400 billion in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA)-delivering 20 million cars cumulatively-selling 1 million robots-selling 10 million FSD subscriptions- operating 1 million robotaxis<h2 class="st-heading-2">Non-Autos To Drive Investment Case?</h2>Munster, though downbeat on the core auto business, says his investment case doesn’t change, and it is still predicated on full self-driving software, robotaxis, and Optimusm humanoid robots. He also opined that robotaxis without a safety driver will likely get regulatory clearance by the end of the year.&nbsp;Morgan Stanley’s Andrew Percoco, who downgraded Tesla to ‘Equal-Weight’ from ‘Overweight’ earlier this month, sees a challenging catalyst path over the next 12 months, presenting downside risk to consensus estimates. At the same time, the analyst believes the positive catalysts for its non-auto business are already reflected in the stock price. Emphasizing the importance of the auto business, the analyst said:<blockquote>“While it is well understood that Tesla is more than an auto manufacturer, we believe it will be increasingly challenging to support meaningful upside to Tesla shares barring an improvement, or at least stabilization, within its auto business, which is a key source of funding for its non-auto businesses.”</blockquote>Tesla bull Daniel Ives, however, sees 2026 as a “monster year” for Tesla as the autonomous and robotics chapter begins.&nbsp;<blockquote>“We expect in early 2026 an easing of the federal framework for autonomous vehicles, with more power going to the federal regulators, with states having less authority on the autonomous rules framework likely under an Executive Order.”</blockquote>The analyst expects Tesla to reach a $2 trillion market capitalization by 2026, with a bull-case scenario pointing to as much as $3 trillion by year-end.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Retail Traders &amp; Analysts Feel About TSLA</h2>Retail sentiment toward the Tesla stock was ‘bearish’ as of early Tuesday, tempering from the bullish mood seen three months ago, when it began gathering some momentum.<figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:720/443;" src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Screenshot_2025_12_30_at_5_24_45_AM_png_773bc87677.webp" alt="Screenshot 2025-12-30 at 5.24.45 AM.png" width="720" height="443"></figure>&nbsp;According to Koyfin, the average analyst price target for Tesla’s stock is $399.15, implying more than 13% downside from current levels. Tesla’s Core EV Business Is Feeling The Heat — What Its Automotive Segment Really Delivered In 2025

Tesla’s stock strength is decoupling from auto fundamentals, with the outperformance now hinging on robotaxis and AI optimism despite a maturing, slowing EV business.

The EV company’s&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/TSLA">stock</a> appears on track to extend its record run, having risen modestly in Wednesday's premarket trading.The Blue state&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/news-and-media/news-releases/dmv-finds-tesla-violated-california-state-law/">dropped</a> a bombshell on Tuesday. In a 2023 complaint filed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), alleging false advertisements with respect to “autopilot” and “full self-driving (FSD) capability, the administrative law judge has found that the company’s use of these terms to describe its vehicles’ Advanced Driving Assistance Features (ADAS) is misleading and violates state law. Tesla now has 60 days to either appeal the decision or come into compliance, or face a 30-day suspension of its dealer license, implying it can’t sell its EVs in California for that period.Responding through its North America X handle, Tesla said:<blockquote>“This was a “consumer protection” order about the use of the term “Autopilot” in a case where not one single customer came forward to say there’s a problem.”</blockquote>The company also said sales in California will continue uninterrupted.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Driverless Drive Reignites Tesla Rally</h2>Tesla's California headwind concerns a technology core to its robotaxi ambitions that has fueled the stock’s record run in recent sessions. Earlier this week, a video shared on the X platform, owned by Musk, showed a Model Y driving around the streets of Austin with no driver or passengers, creating a flutter on social media.&nbsp;The stock jumped 3.6% to close at $475.31 on Monday and added 3.07% on Tuesday to hit a new peak of $489.88.<img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Tesla_1_year_stock_trajectory_png_7db265f260.webp" alt="Tesla 1-year stock trajectory.png">Source: Koyfin<h2 class="st-heading-2">Tesla’s Complicated Relationship With California</h2>Tesla and Musk, in particular, have had a&nbsp;chequered history in California. The company’s first EV manufacturing plant was established in Fremont, California, which it acquired from the GM/Toyota joint venture named “New United Motor Manufacturing” in 2010. This plant served as a manufacturing hub that produced the Model S, 3, X, and Y vehicles. The state also served as the company’s headquarters before it relocated to Austin, Texas, in 2021.&nbsp; Even after the move, Tesla established its engineering headquarters in Palo Alto, a tech hub, in early 2023.Tesla’s early days in California proved to be a strategic decision to capitalize on the state’s massive auto market. According to separate forecasts from the S&amp;P Global and the California New Car Dealers Association, new vehicle sales in California (based on registrations) are expected to be 1.79 million units in 2025, accounting for roughly 11% of the estimated total vehicle sales of 16.15 million units in the U.S.The incentive to focus on California was also due to the stricter zero-emission norms in place in the state, which envisaged a ban on new gas cars by 2035. Since then, they have been relaxed. In June, President Donald Trump signed a joint resolution to cancel the state’s EV mandate and similar norms adopted by 17 other states.But Musk’s bonhomie with California suffered a setback as the state became less business-friendly with its relatively high taxation, stringent regulations, and high housing costs. According to Intuit, California has the highest income tax rate among the states, at 13.3%, followed by Hawaii and New York. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, a year after the company launched its hugely successful Model Y vehicle, the state was among those that had imposed the most stringent restrictions. Tesla was asked to halt production at its Fremont facility in March 2020. Even as Alameda County, where the factory is located, continued stricter restrictions through May, Musk defied the orders and reopened the factory, and also filed a lawsuit against the county. Although the issue was resolved later, it served as a significant motivation for Musk to look elsewhere.&nbsp;The billionaire's relationship with the state’s Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, also soured as he shifted his political allegiance to the Republican Party. Coming down hard on the governor and the state, Musk said in a X post last year:<blockquote>“The only thing stopping the California government and overbearing regulatory agencies from being even worse is that people and companies can move out of state.”</blockquote>The state machinery also turned&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/10/10/california-reject-musk-spacex-00183371">hostile</a> toward Musk and his business ventures, including limiting SpaceX’s rocket launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County.<h2 class="st-heading-2">How Many EVs Does Tesla Sell in California?</h2>Tesla registrations in the state have declined year over year (YoY) for eight straight quarters. Citing data from Experian and the CNCDA, Tesla registrations totaled 52,114 in the third quarter of 2025, a 9.6% YoY drop. The 52,114 number made up 10.5% of the company’s total EV sales in the U.S. in Q3.The sales were down for seven straight quarters, ahead of the Q3 drop. Tesla’s long-simmering tensions with California have flared again after state regulators ruled its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving marketing misleading, threatening sales restrictions.

Musk blasted the bill, prompting a very public and very bitter feud with Trump — a development that only deepened investor anxiety.Still, Musk found a way to reignite optimism among his fanbase. He doubled down on Full Self-Driving upgrades, new Optimus demonstrations, and steady progress on Robotaxis, pushing a narrative that Tesla's next era — powered by autonomy, AI, and humanoid robots — would unlock massive long-term value.He also secured a historic trillion-dollar pay package, contingent on extremely ambitious milestones. In a note released Sunday, Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco downgraded Tesla stock to ‘Equal Weight’ from ‘Overweight’ but upped the price target to $425 from $410, The Fly reported. Percoco concedes that Tesla would become a market leader across autonomous mobility, renewable energy, and robotics, but he is uncomfortable with the valuation.Morgan Stanley now awaits a better entry point, given that the stock is trading at 30-times estimated 2030 EBITDA and there is potential downside to consensus estimates in the near term. The firm’s 2026 volume forecast for Tesla is now 13% below consensus, reflecting its more cautious outlook on the EV industry.The research firm also believes Tesla's "non-auto catalyst path" is already priced into the shares.According to the Future Funds’ Gary Black, the major catalyst for the stock now is the removal of safety monitors in all Robotaxis, which would signal an imminent scale-up. (TSLA) shares from an outside brokerage or institution into a user’s self-directed Robinhood account or a Robinhood IRA.The retail trading platform reported&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/robinhood-delivers-pretty-solid-q3-but-stock-falls-after-hours/cL2t9TRREb9">third-quarter results,</a> beating forecasts, after the close on Wednesday, buoyed by substantial transaction-based and net interest revenues. Specifically, equity trading revenue increased 132% year over year to $86 million, though it accounted for only a fraction of total revenue.While&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/HOOD">Robinhood stock</a> has soared over 280% year-to-date,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/TSLA">Tesla stock</a> is up a more modest 14.4%.<h3 class="st-heading-3">Robinhood’s Tesla Offer</h3>On Tuesday, Tenev ran a poll on the X platform to&nbsp;gauge public opinion on whether Robinhood should “do a match for people moving their $TSLA shares over.”&nbsp; The results of the poll, which has since concluded, showed that an overwhelming 83% asked for a 2% incentive to move over, 6% stated that merely 1% would be enough for them, and 11% expressed willingness to push their Tesla shares into a Robinhood account for free. The poll received responses from nearly 19,000 X users.&nbsp;<img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Screenshot_2025_11_05_at_11_35_13_PM_png_3145106ba4.webp" alt="Screenshot 2025-11-05 at 11.35.13 PM.png">Quoting the poll results, Tenev said, “You voted. We’re shipping. Get an uncapped 2% bonus on taxable and retirement transfers into Robinhood for portfolios with at least 1 TSLA whole share.” He also noted that the offer ends on Nov. 19 and is contingent on “terms and limitations.”Terms and conditions, as outlined in Robinhood’s Help Center, state that transfers to managed accounts are ineligible. The customer should have owned the shares intended to be transferred on or before November 3, the day preceding Robinhood’s announcement. The 2% bonus is calculated on the net transferred asset value of each Tesla-inclusive transfer that settles in the applicable account. The bonus will be credited two weeks after the settlement.Clarifying further, Tenev stated that the move was not a “recommendation of any investment or strategy” or a suggestion to transfer assets to the platform. “By participating, the customer represents and warrants that they beneficially held TSLA on or before Nov. 3, 2025, and the transfer should reflect the prior holding.” Rollovers are not eligible, he added.&nbsp;Tesla CEO Elon Musk commented on Tenev’s post with a “fire” emoji.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Why It’s Important</h2>Tenev’s move comes at a time when Tesla backers&nbsp;have pushed back against Charles Schwab (SCHW),&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/tesla-retail-investors-threaten-charles-schwab-exodus-over-votes-against-elon-musk-s-1-trillion-pay-plan/cL2FHDVR3C3">claiming</a> several of its brokerage ETFs voted against Tesla management’s proposals&nbsp;for Musk’s record pay package. Charles Schwab, however, clarified that it will <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/schwab-s-pro-musk-vote-fails-to-calm-tesla-retail-jitters-traders/cL2qTd3R36U">vote in favor of Musk’s 2025 CEO performance award.</a> The electric-vehicle (EV) maker’s shareholders will vote on the proposals at an annual meeting at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday.&nbsp;According to TipRanks, public companies and individual investors own about 45% of Tesla’s total outstanding shares. Nio-branded vehicle sales accounted for roughly 40% of total sales, while family-oriented Onvo and high-end car brand Firefly contributed 44% and 16%, respectively.The company also noted that its Onvo L90, a large-space flagship SUV&nbsp;launched in July, achieved record sales, with monthly deliveries exceeding 10,000 units for a third consecutive month.&nbsp; "With its industry-leading position in the large SUVs segment and extraordinary product competitiveness, the L90 is well-positioned to accelerate the transition of large three-row SUVs toward full electrification," the company said.Among Chinese peers, XPeng also reported record monthly deliveries (42,013) for October, with the number marking a 76% YoY climb and a 1% monthly increase.
