Honda has introduced its first lightweight electric car for Japan, the N-ONE e, which goes on sale Friday for 2.7 million yen (about $18,300).&nbsp;The little kei car can run up to 295 kilometers on a single charge, giving it more range than Nissan’s Sakura, which is currently Japan’s most popular EV at 180 kilometers, according to a Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-11/honda-debuts-18-300-electric-kei-car-in-japan-to-take-on-nissan">report</a>.&nbsp;Kei cars account for about a third of Japan’s auto market, and Honda already dominates the segment with its gasoline-powered N-Box, the country’s top-selling car.Honda is betting the N-ONE e can help accelerate Japan’s slow shift toward electric mobility. EVs are projected to make up just 3.4% of new car sales in 2025, far behind adoption rates in the U.S., Europe, and China.&nbsp;“When it comes to promoting EVs, our way of thinking is that it should start with the cars most familiar to people,” said Hideo Kawasaka, who oversees Honda’s Japan operations.The launch comes as rivals also jostle for position in the kei EV segment. Honda Bets On $18K N-ONE e To Spark Japan’s EV Transition And Race Ahead Of Nissan

Nissan Motor is overhauling its aging lineup and accelerating product launches as it struggles with its worst financial crisis in a quarter century.&nbsp;The Japanese automaker aims to cut development times for new models to 37 months from more than 50, part of efforts to regain competitiveness in the global market, Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-10/nissan-ceo-wants-to-launch-new-cars-faster-to-speed-turnaround">reported</a>, citing an interview with CEO Ivan Espinosa at the company’s Yokohama headquarters.Espinosa, who took charge in March, said Nissan is “shortening the development process significantly” to react more quickly to shifting trends. He noted efforts begun 18 months ago are bearing fruit, with lessons drawn from competitive markets like China, where EV makers such as BYD dominate.Nissan has refreshed its Leaf EV and a kei mini-car, with new versions of the Elgrand minivan and Kicks crossover on the way.&nbsp;Once an EV pioneer with the Leaf, the world’s first mass-market electric car, Nissan has since lost ground to Tesla and Chinese rivals. Espinosa said the company is determined to recover lost momentum by quickening its release cycle.In the U.S., the company will launch a redesigned Sentra later this year and a plug-in hybrid Rogue in early 2026. July sales in China rose 22% on demand for the N7 electric sedan, while U.S. sales slipped despite resilient overall demand under Trump’s tariffs.Meanwhile, talks to merge with Honda collapsed, and Nissan’s partnership with key shareholder Renault remains complicated, leaving the company to pursue a turnaround on its own. In May, it announced plans to cut 20,000 jobs and close seven factories worldwide.The carmaker faces 180 billion yen ($1.2 billion) in projected operating losses for April–September and more than 5 billion dollars in debt maturing next year. Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro said that the company is partnering with suppliers to reduce costs and maintain its supply chain operations.Even as automakers are moving production overseas, domestic factories in Japan are crucial to the economy and employment. The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association noted the industry supports 5.5 million workers and is urging the government to step in and protect those supply chains.Regional economies are already feeling the strain. Mazda’s Hiroshima base saw its automotive sector business sentiment index plummet to minus 29 in June, with an even steeper decline expected in the coming months. Gunma prefecture, home to Subaru plants, saw a similar slide.The tariff hit was evident in&nbsp;the April–June&nbsp;quarter results. Honda’s automotive arm posted a 29.6 billion yen operating loss and expects a 450 billion yen annual impact.&nbsp;Toyota lost 63.6 billion yen in North America in the quarter, with a projected full-year tariff cost of 1.4 trillion yen. The U.S. will end the stacking of universal tariffs on Japan and cut car levies to 15% as promised, Tokyo’s top trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa said after meetings in Washington with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.&nbsp;The&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;expressed regret that the stacking rule had been applied despite a verbal agreement and pledged to refund overpaid levies, though no timeline was set for implementation, according to a Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-08/us-confirms-it-ll-end-tariff-stacking-cut-car-levy-japan-says">report</a>.The agreement follows&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/japan-presses-us-for-tariff-cuts-on-cars-beef-as-trade-deal-tensions-rise/chrl8dCRd5s">Akazawa’s push earlier this week</a> for the immediate implementation of tariff cuts under last month’s bilateral trade deal, which lowers tariffs on Japanese car imports to 15% from a combined 27.5% and reduces duties on other goods from 25% to 15%.&nbsp;During those talks, Japan also sought confirmation that “no stacking” rules would apply, as they do for the European Union, and that products already facing higher tariffs, such as beef, would not be subject to additional levies.The stacking system had added a 15% universal tariff on top of existing rates, leaving Japanese automakers paying 27.5%, which included a 2.5% base, along with a new 25% tariff&nbsp;imposed by the Trump administration.&nbsp;Akazawa said the 15% rate will replace lower existing levies once exemptions take effect, while higher rates will remain unchanged. He did not expect the process to take&nbsp;anywhere from six months to a year.Uncertainty over when the tariff cuts will take effect is weighing on Japan’s auto industry, a sector that employs roughly 8% of the nation’s workforce and plays a key role in driving wage growth.Toyota Motor&nbsp;on Thursday cut its annual operating profit forecast to 3.2 trillion yen ($21.73 billion) from 3.8 trillion yen and said US tariffs could cost 1.4 trillion yen in profit. First-quarter profit dropped 11% to 1.17 trillion yen but beat expectations as price increases offset some of a 450 billion yen hit from tariffs. The revised guidance marks Toyota’s clearest assessment yet of the impact, a sharp&nbsp;increase from its&nbsp;earlier estimate of 180 billion yen for April and May.Honda Motor, on the other hand, lifted its full-year profit forecast to 700 billion yen from 500 billion yen, saying the tariff burden turned out lighter than expected.&nbsp;However, the April-June profit of 244 billion yen fell short of forecasts after a 125 billion yen tariff&nbsp;was imposed, while sales eased by 1% to 5.3 trillion yen.
