When debt levels outpaced the gold supply, Dalio noted, “the monetary system broke down,” leading either to deflationary depressions or currency devaluation.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Strategic Allocation Over Speculation</h2>For investors, Dalio recommends viewing gold as a strategic asset rather than a speculative one. “When investors ask me if they should buy or sell gold based on whether I think it will go up or down, I tell them that’s a tactical, secondary question,” he wrote.&nbsp;He suggested holding between 5% and 15% of a portfolio in gold, depending on the investor’s risk profile and other assets. “Any deviations from that portfolio should only take place if the investor believes that they have better abilities to market-time which investments are better than others. Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio stated on Friday that gold has started replacing some U.S. Treasury holdings as the riskless asset for investors, amid a continued surge in the yellow metal’s prices.Answering questions by users on X, Dalio&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/RayDalio/status/1979221211188998472">called</a> gold “the most sound fundamental investment,” adding that it is a very effective diversifier to other asset classes like debt and equity.“A factual answer to your question is yes gold has begun to replace some US Treasury holdings as the riskless asset in many portfolios, most importantly in central banks and large institutional portfolios,” he said, adding that the holders of these portfolios have reduced their U.S. Treasury holdings relative to their gold holdings.“Gold is the most well-established currency—in fact it is now the second largest held by central banks—and has proven to be much less risky than all government’s debt assets,” Dalio added.The billionaire hedge fund manager’s comments on gold come at a time when the yellow metal has been on a record-breaking spree. Spot gold prices have surged 15% over the past month, and more than 56% over the past year. Ray Dalio Says Gold Has Begun To Replace Some US Treasury Holdings As Riskless Asset Amid Its Continued Surge

Dalio called gold “the most sound fundamental investment,” adding that it is a very effective diversifier to other asset classes like debt and equity.

Gold prices continued to surge on Friday, rising to a new record high on safe haven demand amid concerns of regional bank loans and ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and China.Spot gold prices climbed to a new high of $4,379 per troy ounce, surging by 1.2%. Gold futures maturing in December gained over 2% to surge to $4,392 before paring some of the gains.Analysts at HSBC project gold prices to rise to $5,000 an ounce by 2026 on rising risks, according to a Reuters&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/india/gold-rallies-beyond-4300oz-set-best-week-five-years-2025-10-17/">report</a>. “Gold rally likely sustained through 1H'26 by geopolitical risks, economic policy uncertainty and rising public debt,” the firm stated in a recent note,&nbsp;adding that it expects central bank demand for gold to remain high.A mix of geopolitical risks and banking concerns could support gold prices, said Alexander Zumpfe, a precious metals trader at Heraeus Metals Germany, according to the report. “With rate-cut expectations, geopolitical risks, and lingering banking concerns all in play, the environment remains highly supportive for gold," said Zumpfe.In a recent&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://think.ing.com/articles/the-commodities-feed-gold-extends-record-rally-fed/">note</a>, analysts at ING Think highlighted the ongoing tension between President Donald Trump and the Chinese administration, which has threatened retaliation against the Trump administration’s proposed tariff hike.Analysts at ANZ expect gold prices to reach $4,600 by June 2026, and they noted that the current surge is driven by structural drivers, suggesting that these higher prices are likely to be sustained, according to a&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/gold-steady-supported-by-expectations-of-ongoing-central-bank-purchases-ec850a1b">report</a> by The Wall Street Journal.Meanwhile, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/GLD">SPDR Gold Shares ETF</a> (GLD) was down 0.21% at the time of writing, while the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/IAU">iShares Gold Trust ETF</a> (IAU) edged lower by 0.2%. The GLD and IAU ETFs have both surged nearly 64% year-to-date.
